AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE
1. 18th century the Eastern coast of North America had been colonized by
   the British.
2. There was serious opposition to his ´taxation without representation´.
3. The American patriots boarded the three ships on the night of 16
   December 1773 – The famous «Boston tea party»
4.   The colonists first meeting Philadelphia.




5. The formal ´Declaration of Independence´ was made on 4 July 1776.
6. ´That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator
   with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the
   pursuit of happiness´.
7. The Battle of Saratoga in October 1777.




  8. The Battle of Yorktown in October 1781.
19TH – CENTURY EXPANSION
1.   The American Revolution was achieved by the ´original 13 states on the
     eastern seaboard.
2.   The Treaty of 1783.
3.   Having gained control of the continent, the Americans began to
     expand across it…
THE WAR OF SECESSION (1861-1865)

1. Expansion brought problems – The problem of slavery.
2. The anti-slavery movement gained support after publication of a book
   called Uncle Tom´s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
3. The formation of the Republican Party.
4. When the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln was elected President in
   1860.
5. Mississipi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Lousiana and Texas- formed a
   Confederacy.
6. Lincoln refused to allow secession to disrupt the union.
7. The twenty-three states of the industrial North were slaves.
8. The three main theatres in 1861- the Mississipi Valley and the Eastern
   seaboard states.
9. The two brilliant Southern general, Robert E. Lee and Thomas ´stonewall´
   Jackson.
10. The became a lost cause for the South after the Battle of Gettysburg in
July 1863.




11. The war had cost the lives of 618,000 men – over half from disease.
