Journalism has traditionally recorded and preserved common life through collective diaries like newspapers. The document traces the evolution of media from print newspapers to online publications and blogs, as well as the rise of real-time reporting through social media like Twitter. This new real-time web has amplified voices, but also facilitated misinformation. Its impact on civic life will depend on improving media literacy. Smartphones and apps further increased constant mobile access to social media and news.
