Regional Networks of Janet
The Janet network is implemented through 16 regional
network operators (RNOs) which connect universities,
colleges and schools to the Janet network. Most RNOs are
operated as independent entities working under contract
to Janet(UK), though Janet operates a small number of
RNOs directly.
Each RNO covers a specific geographical area, as of 2009
the following regional networks are connected to Janet:
cont…
EastNet - The Eastern Regional Area
Network
EMMAN - The East Midlands Metropolitan
Area Network
KentMANb - TheKentMetropolitan Area
Network
LMN - The London Metropolitan Network
NIRAN - The Northern Ireland Regional Area Networking
NNW - Network North WEST
NorMAN - The North East Metropolitan Area Network
SWERN - The South West England Regional Network
UHIMIN - The University of the Highlands and Islands
Millennium Institute Network
WMRN - West Midlands Regional Network etc…..
Conclusion :
Janet is government funded, with the primary aim of
providing and developing a network that meets the needs of
the research and education communities.
The concept of a community underpins everything we
do and the network is based on the need for organizations
to communicate, collaborate and co-operate in the shared
interests of education and research. We offer many feedback
mechanisms, including the Janet Stakeholder Group, to
ensure that an open communication channel exists between
us and the community we serve. Janet is the network
dedicated to the needs of research and education in the UK.
It connects the UK’s research and education institutions to
each other, as well as to the rest of the world through links to
the global Internet. In addition, Janet includes a network
that is available to the community for experimental activities
in network development.
