JANET provides several essential network services and benefits for UK universities and research institutions, including a high-quality, high-capacity IP network; dedicated lightpath connections for bandwidth-intensive projects; videoconferencing services; wireless network access through Eduroam; and single sign-on access to online resources through the UK Access Management Federation. These services help enable efficient collaboration, teaching, and research both within the UK and internationally by facilitating communication, data transmission, and access to networked resources. Looking ahead, JANET aims to continue expanding these services to meet growing needs.

The university currently has over 300 wireless access points but fewer than many other universities. The wireless network is restricting further development and three services are supported but only using older 802.11 b/g standards. This is causing problems with high user density in some areas.
The core wireless network will be upgraded from 2009-2011 to use better, faster, and more capable access points using a "thin" rather than "thick" design. Around 200 additional access points will be added in consultation with faculties. Existing access points will also be upgraded.
One of the wireless services, Unishef, will be discontinued but support will be provided for affected users. 802.11n will be available in some

Mobility – eduroam, meeting society’s mobile internet connectivity needs
Icomera provides internet connectivity solutions for public transportation vehicles, allowing passengers and vehicle systems to connect to networks and each other. They have been operating since 1999 and now connect over 26,000 buses and 4,000 trains daily across Europe and North America. For this case study, Icomera worked with Arriva Group and Nottingham University to provide Eduroam network access on Arriva buses serving the university, allowing secure internet access for students through a secondary authentication system integrated with Icomera's existing onboard routers and network architecture.

The UK Federation is the UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research. It allows authenticated access to licensed resources for all parts of UK Education and Research. It is supported by JISC and Becta and operated by UKERNA. The initial membership was taken from the SDSS development federation. Current membership includes 111 entities, with 14 institutional identity providers and 12 production service providers. Eligibility for primary membership includes universities, colleges, research councils and schools, while partner membership is open to anyone serving the needs of primary members such as commercial providers.
IRCA perspective

Funders, authors and readers may want open access to research, but can they achieve it? A researcher who has been encouraged to make their work open has to deal with regulations, guidance, and mandates from their institution, their funders, their publisher and their national government. These policies are often complex and can be ambiguous, or in conflict with each other.
A supportive policy environment and guidance through the relationship of one policy to another has proved to be essential for real progress in opening access to research. How should policies support the researcher and the research process? How can policies based on commercial profit fit into an open environment? What role do funders have in protecting their investment and the public interest?

Bill Hubbard is the Director of the Centre for Research Communications (CRC) at the University of Nottingham, incorporating the work of SHERPA. The CRC has a portfolio of Open Access projects and services and is a recognised centre of expertise for OA development, policy, repositories and infrastructure.
Bill created the award-winning OA services RoMEO, JULIET and OpenDOAR, which are used around the world to unpick details of stakeholder policies, development policy and which underpin repository use. The CRC have also recently launched FACT, to support researchers in complying with specific RCUK and Wellcome Trust OA polices. Bill has also worked closely with OA publishers and advised on the transitions involved for commercial publishers from traditional to OA business models.

Open Access and Research Integrity Workshop Introduction - 2014

The CRC has a portfolio of Open Access projects and services and is a recognised centre of expertise for OA development, policy, repositories and infrastructure.
Bill created the award-winning OA services RoMEO, JULIET and OpenDOAR, which are used around the world to unpick details of stakeholder policies, development policy and which underpin repository use. The CRC have also recently launched FACT, to support researchers in complying with specific RCUK and Wellcome Trust OA polices. Bill has also worked closely with OA publishers and advised on the transitions involved for commercial publishers from traditional to OA business models.

Open Access and Research Integrity Workshop Introduction - 2014

Several case studies showcase how Irish universities and institutes use HEAnet's video conferencing services for lectures, events, and guest speakers from other locations. HEAnet is working to promote high definition video conferencing as the standard and procuring HD video conference endpoints for client meeting rooms.

This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.
