The DGS- India deals with implementation
of shipping policy and legislation so as to
ensure the safety of life and ships at sea,
prevention of marine pollution, promotion
of maritime education and training in co-
ordination with the International
Maritime Organization, regulation of
employment and welfare of seamen,
development of coastal shipping,
augmentation of shipping tonnage,
examination and certification of Merchant
Navy Officers, Supervision and Control of
the allied offices under its administrative
jurisdiction
Indian Maritime University
The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a Central University, that was
established by an Act of the Indian Parliament namely the Indian Maritime
University Act 2008, on 14 November 2008. It is the only university in the country
imparting education in the maritime field. It has an All-India jurisdiction and
the headquarters is at Chennai.
Merchant Navy can be described as commercial fleet of
non-combatant ships which deals with transportation of
passengers, cargo and lots of other things by sea that may
not possible to dispatch either by road, rail and air,
between all the countries.
Merchant Navy fleet may include Passenger ships, Tanker
ships, cargo ships, bulk carriers, refrigerator ships,
container ships, barge carrying ships including roll on/roll
off ships.
With growing economic and fastest developing country
India have a largest merchant shipping fleets and have a
variety of jobs in Indian as well as foreign vessels.
Merchant Navy is a great career option after 12th, it is
perfect for those who love travelling, adventure,
interested in seeing new places and meeting new
people. In this profession you will travel around the
world and that too free of cost.
NAVY OFFICER  ORDINARY MAN
 Proud of being an officer.
 Starts their initial stipend
with Rs.25000pm
 Learn the independent life at
the age of 17-18yr.
 Leadership quality attains.
 Salary package raise upto 24
lacs PA in 3-4 yrs.
 Luxurious life for family and
the person itself.

They are responsible for the navigation of the Ship,
the loading / discharge of cargo, radio
communication and the control / safety of the crew,
and passengers. The chief navigator of the ship is the
master, who decides the course of the voyage and
maneuvers the vessel. He exercises complete control
over the officers, crew and any passengers on board
the ship. From the trainee cadet level, one will be
promoted to captain of the ship with proper sea-
experience & further exams.

NAVIGATING OFFICERS TEAM:
The ship's engineers have complete responsibility of the
ship's engine room i.e., the main engine, boilers, pumps,
hydraulic fuel systems the ship's electrical generating
plant and distribution system. From the trainee
engineering officer level, one will be promoted to Chief
Engineer of the ship with proper sea-experience and
further exams.

ENGINEER OFFICERS TEAM:
The GP crew involve with all kind of day to day
activities to assist either to Chief officers in Deck side
or Second Engineer in Engine side. One can get
Promotion from GP crew position to Captain level or
Chief Engineer level with proper exams and sea
experience. The catering crew will perform the food
preparation and kitchen activities. The specialized
fitters & welders are very much needed for various
types of vessels.

 Merchant Navy can be joined after 10th as
seafarer after qualifying pre sea courses or
after 12th as an officer through various
degree or diploma courses. Unmarried
Female and Male candidate are eligible .
 Age Limit : 16-25 Years
 Medical Standards: Candidates should be
physically and Mentally strong, fit for sea-
services under standard norms
 Eye-Sight : 6/6 without glasses, No color
Blindness. (The candidate is subject to
medical examination).

Indian Maritime University The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a Central University, that was established by an Act of the Indian Parliament namely the Indian Maritime University Act 2008, on 14 November 2008. It is the only university in the country imparting education in the maritime field. It has an All-India jurisdiction and the headquarters is at Chennai.
  • 5. Merchant Navy can be described as commercial fleet of non-combatant ships which deals with transportation of passengers, cargo and lots of other things by sea that may not possible to dispatch either by road, rail and air, between all the countries.
  • 6. Merchant Navy fleet may include Passenger ships, Tanker ships, cargo ships, bulk carriers, refrigerator ships, container ships, barge carrying ships including roll on/roll off ships.

NAVY OFFICER  ORDINARY MAN  Proud of being an officer.  Starts their initial stipend with Rs.25000pm  Learn the independent life at the age of 17-18yr.  Leadership quality attains.  Salary package raise upto 24 lacs PA in 3-4 yrs.  Luxurious life for family and the person itself.  Struggle to gain the officer rank.  Initial stipend starts with Rs.10K or less than 10k.  It takes many yrs for being independent.  The only persons with higher designation LEADS  Not every person can get 24 Lac package even afer 10 yrs of their jobs.  Struggling life for many years.

  • 11. They are responsible for the navigation of the Ship, the loading / discharge of cargo, radio communication and the control / safety of the crew, and passengers. The chief navigator of the ship is the master, who decides the course of the voyage and maneuvers the vessel. He exercises complete control over the officers, crew and any passengers on board the ship. The ship's engineers have complete responsibility of the ship's engine room i.e., the main engine, boilers, pumps, hydraulic fuel systems the ship's electrical generating plant and distribution system.   • 15. The GP crew involve with all kind of day to day activities to assist either to Chief officers in Deck side or Second Engineer in Engine side. One can get Promotion from GP crew position to Captain level or Chief Engineer level with proper exams and sea experience. The catering crew will perform the food preparation and kitchen activities.   • 25.  Merchant Navy can be joined after 10th as seafarer after qualifying pre sea courses or after 12th as an officer through various degree or diploma courses. Unmarried Female and Male candidate are eligible .  Age Limit : 16-25 Years  Medical Standards: Candidates should be physically and Mentally strong, fit for sea- services under standard norms  Eye-Sight : 6/6 without glasses, No color Blindness. (The candidate is subject to medical examination).
