Lesson plan: Plant cells and photosynthesis
Pre-class: Homework assignment in which
they pull a few definitions from their textbook
and record them to refer to in class the next
day (photosynthesis, eukaryotic, stroma etc.).
In-class:
1. Introduce the topic briefly and go over
the definitions.
2. Show youtube clip for light intro
3. Read aloud textbook excerpts that
contain useful info while students follow
along.
4. Teach parts of the plant cell on
chalkboard.
5. Questions/review of information
covered.
6. Use the SMARTboard activities
to have students recall their
knowledge (draw names randomly)
7. Identify areas that will require
further attention based on how the
students perform on SMARTboard
activities.
Post-class: Homework assignment with
plant cell diagram to label to use for study
guide.

Universal Design Application
As we discussed in unit 2, universal design for learning includes the flexibility and
variation among the way information is taught and practiced in a classroom. The more
variety in the learning environment, and the less uniformity, allows for children of
many different skills and with multiple intelligences obtain more information since
students may learn better with different forms of teaching. This lesson plan accounts
for this in that the hands-on SMARTboard activities have variety since some include
matching and categorizing, while one involved filling in the blank with a visual
diagram. The lesson plan also incorporates reading text along with the teacher to
understand the process of photosynthesis. The visual, audible, and tactile aspects are
all addressed throughout the lesson plan to help account for multiple learning styles
and convey universal design.

  • 1. SMARTboard Lesson Plan Target learners: 9th grade students Subject area: Science Hayley Johnson
  • 3. Lesson plan: Plant cells and photosynthesis Pre-class: Homework assignment in which they pull a few definitions from their textbook and record them to refer to in class the next day (photosynthesis, eukaryotic, stroma etc.). In-class: 1. Introduce the topic briefly and go over the definitions. 2. Show youtube clip for light intro 3. Read aloud textbook excerpts that contain useful info while students follow along. 4. Teach parts of the plant cell on chalkboard. 5. Questions/review of information covered. 6. Use the SMARTboard activities to have students recall their knowledge (draw names randomly) 7. Identify areas that will require further attention based on how the students perform on SMARTboard activities. Post-class: Homework assignment with plant cell diagram to label to use for study guide.

  • 5. Universal Design Application As we discussed in unit 2, universal design for learning includes the flexibility and variation among the way information is taught and practiced in a classroom. The more variety in the learning environment, and the less uniformity, allows for children of many different skills and with multiple intelligences obtain more information since students may learn better with different forms of teaching. This lesson plan accounts for this in that the hands-on SMARTboard activities have variety since some include matching and categorizing, while one involved filling in the blank with a visual diagram. The lesson plan also incorporates reading text along with the teacher to understand the process of photosynthesis. The visual, audible, and tactile aspects are all addressed throughout the lesson plan to help account for multiple learning styles and convey universal design.
