Jharkhali field report

1. INTRODUCTION:-
Mud crabs form a lucrative fishery in
brackish water bodies (estuaries, backwaters and
coastal lagoons and inshore areas). Because of it’s
delicacy, medicinal value and huge export trade
throughout India, it is widely cultured in several
traditional brackish water bodies in the Indian
states like Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil nadu,
Kerala and West Bengal.

faculty by our faculty bus and arrived there are

IDENTIFICATION STRATEGY OF SEX OF CULTURED FISH: males have a slender
abdomen, females have a broader abdomen
CULTURE/BREEDING/BOTH CULTURE AND BREEDING: only fattening of water
crab about 300 gm is done by the dealers to about 700-800 gm
TYPE OF BREEDING: seasonal breeding
PROBLEMSFACED: Marketingproblem
Cannibalism
Predation problem
Feed provided to the crabs must be fresh or else it is
rejected by the crab as it is cultured in confined areas

opportunity for visiting Jharkhali and watching the culture and
fattening of crab practically.
This will be a lifelong experience for us and it will help us in
future to have a broad idea about the variety of crab culture.
We are also grateful to our Dean sir for organizingthe tour by
arranging the vehicle (bus) for having such a comfortable
journey to our destiny.
The farmersengaged in these we visited were very much
cooperative and helped us to a large extent in learning the
culture practices and marketingof crab.
