Jazz was first played at the start of the 20th century by black musicians in New Orleans, Louisiana. Early jazz emerged in New Orleans and began with a basic trio of musicians including a cornet, trumpet or violin to carry the melody accompanied by a clarinet and trombone. The first jazz groups had a rhythmic section with piano, double-bass and drum set that provided rhythm rather than melody. Early jazz pioneers included King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and others.
