Jaundice, also known as icterus, is characterized by a yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes due to high bilirubin levels in the blood. There are three main types of jaundice: prehepatic jaundice caused by excessive red blood cell destruction; hepatic jaundice resulting from liver cell damage; and posthepatic jaundice caused by obstruction of bile flow from the liver or gallbladder. Common causes include infections, blood disorders, liver diseases, and gallstones.
