TOPIC:Jason and the Argonauts
REPORT BY:Felix S. Carbonell – BEED3
For well over three millennia, the story of Jason and his fellowArgonauts has enthralled the world. Jason's
quest to get the fabled Golden Fleece and bring it back to his homeland is a fabulousstory of grit, compassion and
revenge. Over the centuriesmany versions have been recorded, but the essence of the story remainsthe same; an
adventure of epic proportions.Although it is believed that the story was firstly told in about 1,300 BC, the most
authentic and comprehensive version comes much later in the 3rd century BC fromApollonius, head librarian at
Alexandria.
Jason – leader of the Argonauts and son of Aeson, king of lolcos in Thessaly. His father's half-brother
Pelias seized Iolcos, and thus for safety Jason was sent away to the Centaur Chiron.
Argonauts - a member of the band of men who sailed to Colchis with Jason in the ship Argo in search of
the Golden Fleece.
Golden Fleece - is the fleece of the gold-haired winged ram.
THE EARLYSTORY
When Jason is just a little baby, his father, King Aeson, is kicked off the throne of Iolcus by his power
hungry half-brother, Pelias. Jason's mother, Alcimede, hides him and sends him off to be raised by Chiron, a super
smart centaur. When Jason comes of age,he heads back to lolcus to claim his throne. Along the way, he helps an old
lady (who is really Hera in disguise) cross the cold waters of a raging river. The young hero loses a sandal in the
process, but gains the blessing of the Queen of the Gods. When Jason arrives in lolcus, King Pelias recognizes that
the young man is a threat because an Oracle once told him to beware of a man with one sandal. Pelias sends Jason
off on the quest for the Golden Fleece, hoping that the hero-to-be will die on the journey.
GOLDEN FLEECE
The Golden Fleece was the fleece of the golden ram that was held in Colchis, and
the object of desire for Jason, who organised an expedition with the Argonauts in
order to retrieve it.
The myth has it that Athamas, king of the city of Orchomenos, married the goddess Nephele, with whom
he had two children, Phrixus and Helle. Later,he took Ino as his second wife, who hated her stepchildren and plotted
to kill them. She would have succeeded, but at the last second, Nephele sent a flying golden ram to save her children
from their stepmother. She then told her children not to look down while the ram was flying. However,Helle looked
down, felt dizzy and fell into the part of the sea that took her name, Hellespont. The ram and Phrixus eventually
reached Colchis, where the boy was warmly welcomed by the king, Aeetes. Phrixus gave the golden fleece of the
ram as a gift to the king, grateful for his hospitality. Aeetes placed the golden fleece in a garden which was guarded
by a never sleeping dragon. Jason later arrived in Colchis, and after successfully completing the three tasks that
Aeetes had given to him, he retrieved the golden fleece.
PREPARATION OF THEJOURNEY
In order to complete his seemingly impossible quest, Jason called upon Argus, a master boat
builder. Argus built for him the largest ship which had yet been made, manned by fifty
oars. Moreover, Athena fitted the prow with a beam of oak from Dodona, which had the power of
speech. Jason named the ship the Argo after its builder.
THE CREW
When the ship was ready,Jason asked the strongest Greek men to accompany him in his journey and in fact
the prospect of a great adventure brought many to sail with him. Numbering fifty, the list of heroes was astounding.
There were the most famous and brave men of all over Greece, all mighty fighters and some of them had also other
skills. Among the Argonauts, we discern Hercules, who was renowned for his strength and agility; Castor and
Polydeuces, brothers, boxers and horse tamers; Orpheus, skilled in playing excellent music with his lyre; Argos, the
shipwright and lots of others legendary men. Without much further ado the heroes cast off and set sail for the
inevitable, their death or glory.
ADVENTURES ON THE WAY
The Argonauts started their trip with feelings of joy and enthusiasm. They were only seeking for some
excitement and wanted to experience new ways, to see the world around them. They thought it was just a usual
journey and didn't know that this journey would change the life of most of them.
LANDING ON LEMNOS
For a long time, the island of Lemnos had been inhabited only by women and it was there that the Argo first
weighed anchor. These women had provoked the wrath of Goddess Aphrodite for not worshipping her and as a sign
of vengeance she had cursed them with horrible body odor. Unable to bear the awful stench, their husbands had
deserted them to this isolate island. Humiliated and furious for their deplorable condition, the women had murdered
every male on the island. There they lived with their queen Hypsipyle until the day Jason and his Argonauts arrived.
The Argonauts were welcomed with open arms and made babies with these women. Jason himself fathered twin
sons born of Queen Hypsipyle.
ON THE LAND OF DOLIONES
A few years went by and the Argonauts realized that they had to go on with their trip. The Argo sailed from
Lemnos and crossed Hellespont landing at Propontis to replenish their supplies. This was the home of the Doliones
and ruled over by King Cyzicus, a kind and noble man who greeted the Argonauts warmly. While the Argonauts
were gathering supplies they were attacked by Gegenees, earth-born monsters with six arms. King Cyzicus had
forgotten to warn Jason about these monsters who now attempted to destroy the Argo and kill the handful guarding
it. However, the fearless and mighty warrior Hercules was one of the men guarding the ship, repelling the monsters
until Jason and the other Argonauts returned. Together they killed the monsters and took to the sea again but in the
dark of the night, a twist of fate brought them back to the land of the Doliones. King Cyzicus, unable to recognize
his friends, the Argonauts, thought them to be marauders and attacked them with his men. In the confusion that
ensued King Cyzicus was killed. In the dawn, both sides realized their mistake and with heavy hearts held a grand
funeral for the King.

However, the fearless and mighty warrior Hercules was one of the men guarding the ship, repelling the monsters until Jason and the other Argonauts returned. Together they killed the monsters and took to the sea again but in the dark of the night, a twist of fate brought them back to the land of the Doliones. King Cyzicus, unable to recognize his friends, the Argonauts, thought them to be marauders and attacked them with his men. In the confusion that ensued King Cyzicus was killed. In the dawn, both sides realized their mistake and with heavy hearts held a grand funeral for the King.
