Circa 1000 patients per month come
through the Endoscopy department
Struggled to reduce our backlog but
current waiting time is down to 6 weeks
Achieved by running Saturday &
Sunday WLI lists
Every effort made to utilise existing
weekday slots
Start & Stop Audit

Undertaken for 3 weeks (150 sessions)
 Data includes that for Bronchoscopies,
 Cystoscopies, ARPs & Inpatient lists
Out of 150 sessions, 127 started late
 (84.7%)
Variety of reasons cited but one clear
 leader, further analysis needed
3 Top reasons for late starts

 Doctors not ready (50) = 39.4% -
 reasons cited by doctors themselves
 were:
 Ward rounds / clinics overrunning
 Meetings
Nurses / patients / rooms not ready
 Multiple reasons (22) = 17.3%
 Patients not ready (14) = 11%
Patients not ready – reasons cited:
Missing paperwork / no referrals
Difficult cannulation
Capacity / consent issues

07:30 start for 2 nurses each day (previous
 08:00)

 morning list
Expected outcome - to speed up admissions
& enable an 08:30 start in all rooms
Doctors job plans to be reviewed
Start & stop times to be adjusted to reflect
multidisciplinary requirements e.g
radiographer input for ERCPs & doctors
other commitments
Start stop audit to continue with monthly
results clearly on display & reported to staff
at unit meetings
