Sandra Cisneros is an American writer born in 1954 in Chicago. She moved frequently between Chicago and Mexico City as a child, resulting in her having few friends. Cisneros graduated from Loyola University in 1976 and later attended the University of Iowa's Writers Workshop in 1978, a pivotal moment in her development as a writer. She is well known for her 1984 novel "The House on Mango Street" and for writing about the experiences of Latinas in the U.S. while drawing on her own experiences growing up between cultures. Cisneros has won numerous awards for her work.
