3. HISTORY
• Tughluq Dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate constructed a new city of Daulatabad in the
Deccan, southern India, and transferred its capital there from Delhi in 1327, but returned
to Delhi three years later.
• Ala-ud-Din Hasan, designated as the governor of the Deccan, became independent in
1347 by taking advantage of the weakening of Delhi, and established the Bahmani
Dynasty (1347-1527), settling his capital in Gulbarga.
• Gulbarga flourished for 80 years, being the center of Islamic culture in southern India,
until the relocation of the capital to Bidar in 1424.
• This Friday mosque, one of the earliest in South India, was built by Muhammad I (r. 1358-
75) to commemorate Gulbarga as the capital of the Bahmanid Sultanate.
• The Bahmanis established themselves in Gulbarga once the Delhi Sultanate began losing
its hold.

8. ARCHITECTURE
• It is a rare example of an
Indian mosque without a
courtyard as the entire
structure is covered with a
roof.
• The style is neither Persian
nor Indian, but both are
amalgamated so as both
can be unidentifiable.
• The external appearance
of the central dome is
made lofty and prominent
by raising it on a square
clerestory, its shape being
repeated by the smaller
cupolas..
• The cloisters consist of a
series of single archways
of a very wide spans and
low imposts.

9. ARCHITECTURE
• In the middle of the northern cloister
is a large archway with the entrance
which breaks the symmetry of the
design.
• The interior is composed of a
perspective of square bays with
solid piers and vaulted ceilings in
both directions.
• The building has very little in terms
of ornamentation.
• The outer walls, which usually are
solid, are instead open arcades to
allow in much-needed light that
would generally be filtered in from a
courtyard. In the west prayer room
pillars are painted in white with no
decoration.

10. ARCHITECTURE
• This mosque generated an austere architecture with pure solid geometry, completely
different from traditional Indian architecture thereby, transforming the central part, usually
a courtyard, into an interior space, and laying systematically 80 large, medium, and small
sized domes and 27 pointed barrel vaults on the whole continuous arcades of pointed
arches.
• The arches here have a very wide span and are support on short imposts. These
unconventional 'stretched' arches later became a characteristic of Deccani architecture.
• Since this has no minaret, Minbar, or fountain, there is an insistence that it would
originally have been not a mosque but an edifice for another purpose.
• The mosque had a great impact on Deccani architecture, its features like the stilted dome
raised on the clerestory and the cloister arches with wide spans and low imposts.
• The style of this mosque did not find favour in India, though it may have inspired in a
limited way the design of the Kali Masjid and Khirki Masjid built in Delhi shortly
afterwards.

A small dome covers
each bay of four pillars
and arches of the
same width.
The interior is
unadorned and
austere,
with the only seeming
decoration being the
sugar-cube-like piling
in the Squinches.
