Artificial intelligence (AI) offers new opportunities to radically reinvent the way we do business. This study explores how CEOs and top decision makers around the world are responding to the transformative potential of AI.
The case study discusses the potential of drone delivery and the challenges that need to be addressed before it becomes widespread.
Key takeaways:
Drone delivery is in its early stages: Amazon's trial in the UK demonstrates the potential for faster deliveries, but it's still limited by regulations and technology.
Regulations are a major hurdle: Safety concerns around drone collisions with airplanes and people have led to restrictions on flight height and location.
Other challenges exist: Who will use drone delivery the most? Is it cost-effective compared to traditional delivery trucks?
Discussion questions:
Managerial challenges: Integrating drones requires planning for new infrastructure, training staff, and navigating regulations. There are also marketing and recruitment considerations specific to this technology.
External forces vary by country: Regulations, consumer acceptance, and infrastructure all differ between countries.
Demographics matter: Younger generations might be more receptive to drone delivery, while older populations might have concerns.
Stakeholders for Amazon: Customers, regulators, aviation authorities, and competitors are all stakeholders. Regulators likely hold the greatest influence as they determine the feasibility of drone delivery.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
DRS Environmental Systems | Cincinnati, OH | $100M US Defense Contractor 2011- Present
HR Director
Recruited following a merger to lead a turnaround in the value-perception of the HR function. As a member of the
Senior Leadership Team, I led a transformation effort geared towards the implementation of world-class HR practices.
Recruiting/Affirmative Action: Reduced recruiting costs by over 90%, from $7,000 per hire to $420 per hire,
while increasing the success rate of candidates hired through behavioral interviewing. This has significantly
improved our ability to execute in key performance areas.
Employee Development: Implemented Mentor/Protégé and successor development programs as a means of
promoting retention and career path orientation. This has served to improve retention and increase the
number of internal promotions.
Production Improvements: Changed the way that our operations team addressed the issue of production
planning. We went from a tactical and reactionary approach, which yielded poor production preparation
results, to a planning organization that became strategically prepared to deal with manufacturing upsurges.
2. HR Innovation: volunteered to evaluate the cost and efficiency of all DRS recruiting practices. This led to the
enactment of a much larger company-wide social media branding effort which has improved applicant flow
across the company as a whole.

including role as lead negotiator. (New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh). As a result, the company was able to
gain concessions which helped us to manage the business and control costs.

programs. Through creative efforts and plan redesign, we were able to keep employee costs within the range of
affordability.
Recruiting: Responsible for the acquisition of new talent for 14 locations along the eastern seaboard and upper
Midwest, with strong focus on Sales Associates, Managers and C-Suite, CDL Drivers, and Plant Personnel. We

results.
Collective Bargaining: Directly involved in 3 sets of contract negotiations, and became especially adept at
assessing the financial impact of negotiating positions.

in Wisconsin. As a result, we were able to shorten the time for start-up and expedite the start of production,
which helped us win new business.
