(1) In November 2008, Santa Catarina, Brazil experienced its worst disaster from landslides, with over 80,000 people evacuated from heavy rainfall. (2) The study found that during this extreme precipitation event, winds from the abnormally warm (0.65°C above average) South Atlantic aligned moisture from the ocean over the mountainous regions of Santa Catarina, causing over 500mm of rainfall in some areas. (3) Modeling showed that if the ocean temperature had been 0.65°C cooler, precipitation levels over the continent would have been 27% lower. The extreme rainfall had a return period exceeding 1000 years, indicating it was a very rare event amplified by unusually warm ocean
