It’s Not Personal. It’s Just Business.

  1. I would like to start with a story I think we all can relate to.
  2. Your boss comes to you with an exciting opportunity to be the engineering lead on a project. You dive straight into it, meet with the customers to understand the design requirements Get out into the field to take measurements. Spend weeks creating all the necessary drawings and completing the calculations. You are excited because leading this project gives you the opportunity to present to executives, the same executives who will be on the selection committee for a promotion you are up for. After months of hard work, you are so proud of what you have designed and put together, and as you are setting up time with your boss to review everything. You get a text from him saying…
  3. “The project has been cancelled.” Cancelled – what - You are speechless. How could this be happening? Don’t they know how hard you have worked on this. Don’t they know how important it is to implement this design – you have the charts and data to back that up. He knows how important it was to be presenting to executives – does this affect your chances for the promotion? And sending this type of information in a text – how unprofessional. You are crushed.
  4. Scenarios like this happen to you over and over again throughout your career. Emotions are part of the workplace. But the critical thing to understand in surprising situations or conflicts with team members is what is story and what is reality. The story in this is the hard work you put into the project is lost or the chance for the promotion may be in jeopardy. The facts could be the budget sadly just got cut – or maybe your boss sent the text to the wrong person and you are all upset for nothing… In the end, it always comes down to how you react in a situation.
  5. You should be able to change this – you are cold – but it is out of your control Do you break the glass? Or do you put on a sweater? The Thermostat is not out to get you You can control the situation – you just have to get creative
  6. The justice scale image is used, because many of us can be blind to the way we come across. Or in some cases, we change who we are or how we act to please people. Stereotypically, woman can be more timid in meetings. Some “soften” an idea with statements like – this might be a silly idea, but Or a talented friend of mine was sitting in an executive meeting – a question was asked to the group – she was 95% sure, but was afraid to answer because she was not 100% certain. Another person in the room spoke out and was completely wrong. This was eye opening to her. Who in here has been in a situation that you did not want to tell a customer no. It is ok to tell people “no” – being helpful vs. making sure it is the right priority As engineers we have to make decisions of safety issues, technical calls, or just plain good business decisions. None of us want to be considered obnoxious or out for ourselves, but we also have to understand that being who you are might not make BFFs at work
  7. What I find to be important is to be authentic. Own your own value. Have a center of strength in your ability and your ideas – that will make it easier to deal with conflict Easier not to be crushed when someone does not like your idea Easier to not take it as a personal insult Then - Once you understand who you are, it is also important to understand your partners. How do they work? How do they communicate?
  8. Let’s consider a glass of milk gets spilled – even given the same scenario, people react differently Everybody found how they would react? Now, how would your boss react? Or a member of your team that is hard to get along with? Leader Type – Assertive, Bottom line, “no nonsense” People Type – Empathetic, Can’t say no, Good listener Task Type – Dependable, Organized, Precise Free Spirit Type – Adventurous, Curious, Innovator Once you understand the people you work with better, you can understand if a confrontational situation was a single incident or just how they operate
  9. Everyone knows the golden rule, but to communicate in the business world you need to follow the platinum rule. Be conscious of other peoples’ type - this is how THEY want to be related to Leader type – it is about the bottom line, so use reason not emotion People type – be more informal and sell them with the personal touch Task type – Be punctual, brief, and sell them by giving them the data Free Spirit Type –be relaxed and sell them by focusing on uniqueness of the situation and potential for fu. Application – for those looking for job interviews or promotion opportunities – it is important to understand the company and/or person and what is important to them. Job interviews – Body language will help you understand their personality traits Promotion opportunities Change your approach
  10. You cannot control everything (bring back the thermostat image) Difficult situations will arise. Conflict will occur. How will you respond? Stimulus  Gap Response It is ok to stop and think during this gap Duane – challenging coworker story These situations are going to happen – overtime, difference in leading – how are you going to deal with them
  11. Emotions in the business world. Is there a way to talk emotions and how they are interpreted Conflicting demands/things that are important Self worth and confidence are the anchor
