Various initiatives have been introduced to
procure the greater establishment and diffusion
of ICT to improve capacities in:

In order to fulfill “Vision 2020”, transformation
had been made on education system:
 ICT-enabled Smart School.
 Training    of   teachers,       staffs    and
  administrators
 Electronic books
 E-learning
PROBLEM STATEMENT


   ICT application had become an important part of
    teaching and learning. The Ministry of
    Education has invested a huge effort in terms of
    funding and training to equip teachers and
    students with ICT skills. In your opinion, what
    are the issues and challenges in integrating ICT
    in teaching and learning in our Malaysian
    Schools?
FACTS:
Nowadays, ICT application plays
 an important role in schools.

ELECTRONIC BOOK
   In 2001, the Ministry initiated the Electronic Book Project
    to see how this device can be used to improve teaching
    and learning and solving the perennial problem of heavy
    school bags.
   The Electronic Book project :-


            was conducted in 35 schools
            over a period of five months.

MULTIMEDIA SUPER CORRIDOR
(MSC)
   The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) was
    established in 1996 with the aspiration of becoming
    a global hub for ICT and multimedia operation,
    innovation and services to transform Malaysia into
    a knowledge-economy and achieve developed
    nation status in line with Vision 2020.
   This corridor houses core MSC initiatives which
    include high technology project :-

SMART SCHOOL
   Smart School is defined as an initiative which uses
    a technology platform as a medium on which
    distance learning and specific teaching expertise
    are made available to remote locations.

   Smart School Qualification Standards (SSQS) is
    globally positioned to highlight the need for effective
    performance monitoring and evaluate the
    performance of ICT for Development programmes.
   The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in SSQS
    include:-

NOTEBOOK 1MALAYSIA

   The distribution of free notebook 1Malaysia is an
    important project in support of High Speed
    Broadband (HSBB) and National Broadband
    Initiative (NBI) to achieve broadband penetration of
    75% by 2015.

   To supply the laptops, a sum of RM 1 billion was
    allocated under the Universal Service Provision
    (USP) fund.
   The four main objectives of USP are:-

        providing the access of communication to
        groups and individuals in areas with poor
        coverage


        improving usage of ICT in the community
        towards a knowledgeable society


        contributing to the social economic
        development of local communities



        minimizing the digital divide
TEACHING SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS IN
ENGLISH (PPSMI)
   PPSMI is a government policy aimed to improve the
    English language level among primary and
    secondary school students in 2003.

   Government had launched a program called
    Teaching and Learning Science, Mathematics and
    English (SME) in secondary schools by using and
    integrating ICT application.
   Government spend lots of money to provide :-

SOLUTIONS
• Malaysia should be prudent in making decisions
  Financial        about suitability of the models of ICT to be used.
                 • Potential sources of money and resources for ICT
  problems         use programs: public subsidies, fund raising
                   events, community support, etc.




                 • Raise up the awareness of teachers about the
  Capacity         importance of ICT skills in teaching.
                 • Provide more training to build more technical
  Building         support specialists.




                 • Satellite TV can be used in rural areas to act as
                   supplementary tool to overcome the shortage of
Infrastructure     ICT infrastructure.
                 • Satellite Internet-link can be used in those
                   schools without telephone lines.

ELECTRONIC BOOK  In 2001, the Ministry initiated the Electronic Book Project to see how this device can be used to improve teaching and learning and solving the perennial problem of heavy school bags.  The Electronic Book project :- was conducted in 35 schools over a period of five months. the device does improve computer and technology knowledge, as well as engaged students in reading and learning.
