Interconnecting and Enriching Higher Education Programs using Linked Datafzablith
In this presentation, we present our work that aims to de-blackbox the representation of a higher education curriculum. We rely on linked data to generate and represent the conceptual connections around the courses in a higher education program. We deploy a Semantic Mediawiki platform to collaboratively build the knowledge graph around the courses. We highlight the value of this linked data layer through two use cases to (1) enrich online learning environments and (2) support the program review process.

The focus of this hands-on workshop is the OUT Digital Fluency course for Academic staff/faculty. This course is designed to build capacity for educators in relevant topics to support their work in the higher education sector via enhanced digital skills. The notion of ‘fluency’ implies more than literacy - it seeks to promote a state where pedagogical purpose takes centre stage and digital / online technologies are used as tools without providing an inhibiting obstruction to the educator.
Designing for Openness: Values Based Organisations Place in the Digital Lands...Ronald Macintyre
Digitisation, open and online, digital innovation, digital participation, all press on and ask questions of values based organisations. Based on work with a range of Third Sector partners over a number of years this paper explores how values based organisation understand and find their place in messy landscape. Suggesting it is not always appropriate for values based organisations to adopt practices from private sector digital disruptors, as these start with different assumptions and values, but instead develop their own approaches based on their organisational values and the needs of the people they support. Using work with a range of partners in different sector, from Health and Social Care to Trade Unions the paper looks at how values based organisations have approached this tension. Sharing what has been learnt from working in partnership, and how this has informed a mutual understanding of how to design and produce digital artefacts and critically the social and situated nature of how they are used.

Spotlight on the digital, http://digitisation.jiscinvolve.org/wp/spotlight-on-the-digital/, is a collaborative project between Jisc, RLUK and SCONUL. It sought to assess the discoverability problem in relation to digitised collections and identify practical solutions to improve their discoverability both at national/above campus level and locally at institutional level.
These slides describe a range of above campus or national “solutions” that have been identified by the project and that could support the discoverability of digitised collections.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. Session Objectives
• Identify a systematic process to adapt eLearning content for global
audiences
• Recognize content within courses that may require cultural
adaptation
• Recognize best practices for developing eLearning content for global
organizations
3. Companies are training their employees
• Estimated that companies spend
$100 billion annually on training
of their employees
• 2/3 of training costs stem from
travel expenses
• How do we reduce the cost of
training?

6. Cultural Adaptation Process Model
Image Source: Edmundson, A. (2007). The cultural adaptation process (CAP) model
7. Tips for designing eLearning content
• Identify your audiences
• Look for clarity of copy and graphic design
• Pair down word choices, idioms, and cultural references
• Create a standard writing style and design guidelines for translation
and localization
• Consider developing global training teams that build a strategy for
rolling out international content*
• Consider having content go through design and review phases by
cultural representatives
8. Table Activity
Work with 2-3 other people at your
table:
• Select an example from the
packet
• Identify 2-3 aspects of the
example that might benefit
from a redesign
• Be prepared to report back to
the group
9. Think, Pair, Share
• What design challenges
have you encountered in
your cross cultural work?
• How did you overcome
them?
10. Summary
• ELearning provides great
opportunities for training teams
• Adapting eLearning for global
audiences can take a lot of effort
• Things to consider when designing:
• Content type
• Instructional method
• Media

SLIDE GOAL: Orient learners to presentation topic, provide background and why the topic interests me
SLIDE GOAL: Orient learners for goals of session and roadmap of where the session will go
SLIDE GOAL: Introduction/Mini lecture (5 MIN) – quick reminder of training industry today
Speaking points:
Good news for all of us is – companies are training their employees!
Spending a lot of money on training
Most of the costs are travel related – taking people out of work, actual flights, board, shipping actual materials, etc.
Question is how do reduce some of the costs of training?
SLIDE GOAL: Introduction/Mini lecture continued (5 MIN) – Transition to global companies using eLearning and the benefits it brings
Speaking points:
eLearning offers many benefits to global organizations
Traditionally content being produced by global firms in English than later translated/adapted
ELearning are cultural artifacts and reflect the environment that they're created in
SLIDE GOAL: Introduction/Mini lecture (5 MIN) – Introduce examples of courses that were culturally adapted – where the problem is
Speaking points:
ELearning are cultural artifacts
People involved in eLearning or distance education should be sensitive to the social, cultural, and language assumptions embedded within their online courses and programs
One example above had issues with content being adapted. The Instructional Designer for this course, used the mnemonic DASH to show a hiring process with our assessment tool. Our localization agency came back and said that it translates to ‘DAESH’ in French which is too close to the pronunciation for the radical group ISIS (probably worst case scenario but you get the point)
One example above is where we had no issues with content being adapted. The Instructional Designer for the project included our Localization Project Manager during every step of the design and development process. She was able to review important content choices such as images, graphics, and colors being used.
By now you're probably like “we get it Roberta we should think about adaptation while designing to help eliminate issues down the road. BUT how do we actually do it?”
SLIDE GOAL: MINI LECUTRE (25 MIN)- Use theory to inform practice - introduce Cultural Adaptation Process Theory (why it was created, different, levels)
Speaking points:
Created in Edmonson in 2007 - model is helpful to determine if content adaptation is required for learning content
Matrix can be read from left to right where you identify the course in terms of complexity – then determine steps to adapt content to learner
Higher levels would require more effort
How to work through the model:
Evaluating content types and examples
Identifying pedagogical paradigms, include instructional methods, activities and so forth
Identifying Media
Identifying national level cultural dimensions of learners and critical cross-cultural dimensions (associated features and characteristics) of the course
Determining the adaptation strategy
SLIDE GOAL: MINI LECUTRE (25 MIN CONTINUED) - Introduce some best practices designers can use when creating cross-cultural content
Speaking points:
Audience – if you know you're going to have international audience members or have to localize content, keep this in mind from the very beginning and let it guide you
Think about graphics
Keep your word choice as concise as possible
Writing guides can be helpful for localization/adaptation teams
Depending upon how large your organization is there could be a specific team member handling localization or entire teams
Consider having content go through design and review phases by cultural representatives
SLIDE GOAL: SMALL GROUP ACTIVITY (20 min)- Give participants the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a safe environment. Provide them with examples and ask them to work in small groups (2-3) to identify aspects of the designs that might benefit from a redesign.
Speaking points:
Take 20 minutes to work with 2-3 other people at your table. Look through the examples and identify 2-3 aspects of the design that might benefit from a redesign.
When you're done well circle back with the group to discuss.
Debrief:
Ask:
What are some areas of the example your group identified to potentially redesign?
SLIDE GOAL: Give participants time to think about relating what they learned doing the session to their work environment
Ask:
Are there any examples of projects that you’ve worked on that were designed for global audiences? How did it go?
Are there any lessons learned that from today that you plan on taking back to projects moving forward?
SLIDE GOAL: WHOLE GROUP DISCUSSION (5 MIN) - Re-enforce benefit of cultural adaptation of learning content, determining localization strategy
Summarize lessons learned & take away
Speaking Points:
Companies are spending a lot on training, most of it is spent on travel
ELearning is a great option for global organizations but with that comes issues of cultural adaptation, localization, etc.
To cut down on potential problems think about content, instructional method, media when designing and developing content that might be adapted
CAP Model provides a great way to think through it.
SLIDE GOAL: Provide an opportunity for learners to ask questions/concerns
SLIDE GOAL: Provide contact information for learners to reach out after the session
