I had created an event for ISM (Institute of Supply Management). Not on my list, but had a deck so am putting it out anyways. With better marketing from a group, this could be a good idea.

ISM Challenge Event Update: February 11, 2016 - Selections
Selected Presenters will be contacted on or before February 24th.
Please respond before February 24th. We will assist you in preparing a short presentation (10
minutes, 3-5 slides) for the lunch in March if you are selected. Anyone is welcome to submit,
though they must plan to attend the lunch in March.
1) Make or Buy - how to decide & understand total costs
Electrical/mechanical product firm was curious in evaluating the differences between making
components in the US to Chinese sourcing.
Q: What are all the costs and risks associated with moving to a Supplier from Producing yourself,
specifically China?
2) Payment terms vs Pricing
Major telecom company CFO was wondering how to balance getting good terms from small or
local suppliers with good prices. They'd like 90s days, but most small suppliers are not set-up for
this. Larger suppliers can do this, but then sub-contract and have higher prices.
Q: How to obtain better payment terms while receiving competitive prices?
3) Understanding Supplier Margins for Negotiations
Local consumer products company that contract manufactures many products for private label
was wondering how to determine the room to negotiate pricing from Suppliers outside of just
competing out contracts.
Q: Outside of competitive bidding, how else do people estimate negotiation room on margins for
supplier products?

Event The ISM Challenge
Date March 10, 2016 (Lunch Meeting)
Description
The ISM Challenge is a new type of event, where we will ask Members
(anonymously) to submit business challenges & problems, select 2-3, and then allow
other Members/Attendees to show how their companies solved them or to provide
possible conceptual solutions to resolve them. A Team made up of Board Members
will both select the problems, post them, and then later, review solutions. The best
selected solutions will present for 10 minutes, then 5 minutes for Q&A at lunch.
Challenges /
Problems
Any ISM related business problem is welcome for submission. US mail or email is
welcome, but preference is to contact any Board or Team Member (below) to discuss
or submit. They will submit problems (without names) for consideration of selection.
Solutions
Solution structure for ‘selection’ will be welcome in any form, and solution
presentations for those selected will be in approximately a 3 page PowerPoint. The
format and structure will be provided to those selected to prepare presentations.
Milestones
January 28th – All ‘Challenges’ or problems need to be submitted. The ones selected
will be posted on the ISM website and their submitters will be contacted directly.
February 11th – Final date for submissions of ‘solutions’ for consideration
February 24th – Final date for selected ‘solution’ authors to submit presentations
March 14th – Lunch event where authors will present their solutions

The ISM Challenge is an event we will hold in lieu of the typical dinner
speaker. March 2016 is the date, and it will function differently.
• We will obtain ‘problems’ from the membership they’d like to see solved.
• Solicit ‘answers’ from other members for a set of chosen problems.
• Choose ‘best’ answers to be presented at the dinner.
• Authors of the ‘best’ answers will present at dinner event in March.
• (Vision is to do this once a year, possibly twice at most)
• Benefits of Event
• Engage membership with problems and answers.
• A single dinner will have 2-3 topics covered, drive higher attendance.
• Permit people to see other people’s problems, demonstrate prowess.
• Reinforce the notion that ISM is the group with this expertise.

ISM Challenge Event Communication Points to Members
# Contact Reason Message
1
Request
Challenges
Ask members to
submit their
challenges to Board
and Event Team.
ISM has created a new type of event. (Create
a sheet explaining it). Please contact one of
the following people to discuss or submit your
challenge to. They will he the only person
privy to your and your company’s identity.
2
Challenges
Selected
Inform members of the
Challenges that they
can ‘solve & submit’
Of the X challenges submitted, we have
chosen the following Y to present to the
membership for ideas and solutions. Please
submit your thoughts, ideas or presentations to
the Team before Date Week T-6.
3
Selection of
‘Best’ Answers
Inform people who
submitted of their
inclusion or not (only
goes out to people
who sent in solutions)
We thank you for your submission, it has (has
not) been included in the ‘best’ to be presented
or discussed. It was very competitive, with a
total of Z solutions for our Y challenges.
4
Panelist
Selection
Inform membership as
to who will be leading
the discussion or be
on the panel
The ISM Challenge will focus on the following
Y Challenges, and the following people will be
part of the panel or will present their solutions
at dinner (include: CPOs, Board, Winning
Submissions, Others that will draw attendees)
10. 10Jay Martin March 2016 ISM Challenge Implement.ppt
The structure for both submissions will not be too restrictive, but
does need to ensure that people adequately communicate both.
ISM Challenge Event Challenge & Solution Structure
For the Solutions presented at the event, a guideline of maximum of 3
slides and 10 minutes is probably best.
Challenge Submission Structure
Allow people to submit in any form they like, provide suggested
contents (include Situation, Problem and Implications, along with, if
known, elements that would render the challenge ‘solved’).
Solution Submission Structure
Should allow people to send into a single email address or submit to a
Board or Team member. Solutions should have: Author’s Name,
Challenge (we need to number them also), method that they used or
propose the solution be resolved, and then results or expected results.
Some people will send in a paragraph, while others will prepare a
presentation deck. Cannot imagine that if we do multiple, we will want
or allow anyone to present or discuss for more than 10 minutes.
