The Institute of Rural
Research And
Development (IRRAD)
houses the headquarters
for the Non-profit
Government
Organization, S.M. Sehgal
Foundation, which works
on development projects
in rural Haryana.
It was completed in Jan
2012 and is built in
composite climate.
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
For maximum ventilation, an internal courtyard has been planned. It provides
ventilation thereby reducing the load on artificial lighting and mechanical
ventilation systems.
It has a water body in the center and is surrounded by three buildings and then a
jali on one side providing for sufficient ventilation.
The PV installation on
the roof also acts like
a shade for the roof
itself (which is also
insulated) reducing
heat gain from the
southern sun.
35 kilowatt of
electricity is
generated by
photovoltaic panels .
The windows are
shaded from the
outside, the
shading devices
like here fins, are
designed to allow
daylight into the
space and views
out of the
building, but do
not allow solar
heat gain through
the glazed area.
Light shelves have been incorporated in the
facades which brings indirect light into the
working spaces restoring the use of artificial
lights.

Double glass panes are used
everywhere in the building.
Insulated double glazed
window provides limited
transfer of hot or cold air from
outside.
Amphitheatre acts as a filter bed for storage of
rainwater below it. The rainwater collection
facility is designed as a focal element in the
garden. 4L liters of water is harvested annually.
The IRRAD building is oriented in the north-south axis direction.
This orientation reduces solar radiation on longer facades.

Photovoltaic cells are
planted above the
courtyard. Natural light
enters them spreading
into the space.
