Flashing lights, hugs from strangers, pounding of tables, and more await those coming into the
Deaf Cultural world. After all, how does one communicate with another who cannot hear? From the
perspective of one who grew up in the hearing world, these cultural norms were anything but
normal; yet they have become ingrained, almost second nature. Now these are my norms and are
part of my world. My journey into Deaf culturestarted in elementary school while riding the
school bus. A friend of mine named Francis allowed me into her world of American Sign
Language by teaching me the manual alphabet and some basic conversational sign language, such
as roller skates and how are you? . Later, I volunteered at a camp for Deaf and hard of hearing...
Some options include: flashing the lights briefly, stomping on the floor, or simply walking across
the room to grab their attention. Another important cultural tidbit, eye contact is incredibly
important. To an outsider it can be a bit unnerving, it almost feels like they are staring you down;
however, direct eye contact is expected when someone is communicating with you, as this shows
that you are fully engaged in the conversation. Breaking eye contact while in a conversation is akin
to interrupting and stating that their conversation is not worth your time.
Living isolated by a majority of those who live around you, simply because of the mode of
communication, can be very difficult. A majority of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in
the United States communicate with a three dimensional language known as American Sign
Language, or ASL. ASL is a unique language that differs greatly from English. Not only does ASL
differ from English linguistically, it also differs in modality. Instead of articulating phonemes with
one s mouth, teeth, tongue, and throat, one articulates ASL with one s hands, fingers, face, and
surrounding space. As such, an individual whose primary language is ASL may struggle reading
and writing in English, especially in complex situations such as a doctor s appointment. Also, the

them to buy the advertised product(s). In order to appeal to each of the categories, companies use
different tactics to catch viewers attention. The use of ethos, logos, and pathos can make or break

Budweiser first released its Lost Dog commercial during Super Bowl XLIX (49). The

Awakening For this experience, I decided to explore Buddhism in order to enhance my

Introduction: Worldwide emergence and spread of antimalarial resistance has led to use of
molecular markers in monitoring of resistant plasmodium parasite. Single nucleotide
polymorphisms in the K13 propellor domain have been recently associated with artemisinin
resistance. This study aims at profiling K13 molecular markers related to reduced susceptibility to
Artemether Lumefantrine in parasite isolates from Msambweni coastal region, Kenya. Methods:
Chelex method was used for extracting DNA from Plasmodium falciparum positive dried blood
spots on filter paper samples. Polymerase chain reaction and sequencing technique was used to
detect single nucleotide polymorphism in K13 propeller gene. MEGA 6 was used to identify
specific SNP combinations using wild type reference sequence (XM_001350122).

one knew where she was. It looked like being shut out of the entire world in a fairy place. The
little books she had read and adored were fairy story books, and she had read about the secret
gardens in some of them . Sometimes people slept there for hundred years, and she found that to
be rather stupid. She had no desire to go to sleep, and, in fact, she was becoming wider awake
daily which passed at Misselthwaite.

Hillbilly Elegy Summary
In the fifth reading assignment of Hillbilly Elegy, the chapters highlight J.D s time in high school,
the Marines, and college.
The start of chapter seven dealt with the death of Papaw. I think this death took a toll on J.D
largely because Papaw was the closest thing to a stable father figure he had. I love the
relationship that Papaw and J.D had, and I m sure it was one that J.D cherishes to this day.
Reading about Papaw s funeral was especially tough for me because I have been exactly where
J.D was in that moment. My grandfather passed away in the summer of 2015, and I also spoke at
his funeral. I was extremely close with my Grandpa, or Papa as I called him, and reading about
J.D s experience brought up some tough feelings for me. I noticed that J.D s mother took the loss of
her father extremely had. She was thrown into a prescription drug induced tailspin. This is yet
another example of the loss of a loved one completely derailing the life of one of their loved ones.
Her story reminded me of Scott from Evicted. This also made me feel for J.D, he had just lost his
beloved grandfather, and now he had to worry about his mother struggling with her addiction.
Later in the chapter, I was happy to read that Lindsay had a great life going for her. She is one of
my favorite characters in this book, and I was joyed to read that she had found a great husband.
I also thought it was completely selfish for J.D s mother to ask him to move to Dayton with her
newest boyfriend. I was also sickened to read that J.D s mother sent him to a therapist just so
she could interrogate him about how he acted towards his mother. I think if J.D saw an actual
therapist, he could have really benefited from it. I also really respected that Lindsay dropped
everything she was doing to go pick up J.D from Dayton. I think this really speaks to their
relationship, and how much she cares for her brother. I was also stunned to read that J.D s mother
agreed to marry a man she had only known for one week. I knew that she had relationship issues,
but this still shocked me. I think J.D eventually became numb to the amount of partners his mother
brought home. The story of J.D s mother begging for his clean urine was extremely sad to me. I
