IoT the driver of Business Innovation: better products, new services and...Eurotech
The IoT is the manifestation that the raw material of the information age is data. Data is the new source of innovation and the lever to achieve business sustainability. By extracting data from assets and products, companies can become more efficient through a strategic rethinking of their value chains and business processes. In so doing, companies will add the required readiness to shift from products to services, and eventually enter in the outcome economy. To truly embrace the digital transformation, organizations need to collect actionable data from their assets, processes, and products and then connect the OT world where data are generated to IT world where data are consumed. To make this happen, a IoT integration platform, that gives to the App an easy and versatile access to the data, is required . As a matter of fact the IoT essence resides in an impressive simplification of the OT-IT integration through a loosely coupled containerized layered (LC2L) architecture. The benefits are huge: the transformation of any business into a smart business, increasing competitiveness also in mature markets; the creation of new innovative products and services; and the enablement of service prosumerization. Abundance of data is the real essence of IoT, where the App is the tip of the data iceberg.

Billions of interconnected devices that are connected to the internet in the IoT (Internet of Things) will produce astronomical amount of data to process. The amount of data can easily overload the cloud computing resources at the back-end IT systems. With Fog (or Edge) computing, the problem can be eased by allowing smart devices (e.g., smartphones, PCs, set-top boxes) at the edge of the IoT networks.

The industrial internet of things (IIoT) sometimes called Industry 4.0 – is radically changing how businesses, especially industrial companies, operate.
Let’s begin with a short IIoT definition:
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) refers to the vast number of machines and devices – or ‘things’ – a business uses that are now connected to the Internet. Protecting this critical operational data, secure IIoT forms a closed, private Internet network where the devices can communicate and share data with other people, systems, and things. This data can be used to improve existing work practices and business processes as well as creating entirely new ways of doing things.

Ericsson Technology Review: Spotlight on the Internet of ThingsEricsson
The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a fundamental cornerstone in the digitalization of both industry and society as a whole. It represents a huge opportunity not only in economic terms, but also from a global challenges perspective – making it easier for governments, non-governmental organizations and the private sector to address pressing food, energy, water and climate related issues.
5G and the IoT are closely intertwined. One of the biggest innovations within 5G is support for the IoT in all its forms, both by addressing mission criticality as well as making it possible to connect low-cost, long-battery-life sensors.
With this in mind, we decided to create a special issue of Ericsson Technology Review solely focused on IoT opportunities and challenges. I hope it provides you with valuable insights about the IoT-related opportunities available to your organization, along with ideas about how we can overcome the challenges ahead.

Polymer is a Google's attempt to introduce principles that were intended to get ahead of their time (HTML templates, custom elements, shadow DOM, HTML imports), but trends went into another direction. Google uses Polymer in its products including (but not limited to) YouTube, Google Music, Google Earth, but there is hardly any interest to Polymer from the community. Thus, you can develop a rich web application with Polymer, but it's hard to find documentation and examples.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Port of Rotterdam prepares for digital transformation
with IBM IoT
Previously, Europe’s largest port by cargo tonnage banked on
conventional communication techniques such as radar and
radio to establish communication between captains, pilots and
terminal operators to make vital decisions on port operations.
With the IBM alliance, IoT sensors in addition to augmented
intelligence (AI) and smart weather data will be used to collect
numerous data streams including weather, water levels,
currents, temperature and check berth availability.
These data will be analysed by IBM’s cloud-based IoT
technologies and turned into information. The port authorities
can use this information to make decisions that can reduce wait
times, manage traffic more efficiently, decide best time for ship
docking, load and unload among other advantages.

Next Generation Location Positioning Solution for IoT
Proof of concept demonstrates the power of LTE-only
positioning capabilities.
This solution is based on off-loading small amounts of
modem data to PoLTE’s cloud servers where location
engines accurately calculate positioning of devices. If a
location engine was embedded on the device itself,
processing power and memory would be constrained
while adversely impacting battery life and device size.
For mass adoption, PoLTE believes that the wireless
device itself should be minimally impacted while
adding highly valued location capabilities.

Only one in four organisations can protect themselves
against IoT threats, says survey
“Organisations need to be aware of these risks, even
if they do not use any IoT devices – the growing
number of connected devices globally means there
is an increased risk of DDoS attacks through IoT
botnets – but our data suggests firms are ignoring
these threats,” added Groucutt.
“Research from our annual Data Health Check
survey revealed that only 13% of businesses saw
IoT threats as a major concern. Additionally, just
over a quarter of organisations (27%) had set
policies in place designed to protect against IoT
threats.”

GDPR And IoT – The Problem Of Consent
IoT manufacturers and service providers don’t have a good track record
with providing explanations. According to data from 2016:
▪ 59% of IoT devices failed to explain to users how they process user
data
▪ 68% failed to explain how they store information
▪ 72% failed to explain how to delete data
▪ 38% failed to include contact information
One of solution IoT manufacturers and service providers can pursue is
data anonymization. If the data can be fully anonymized so that it
cannot be used to identify any person, it falls out of the jurisdiction of
GDPR. However, if making data more anonymous makes it less
valuable, a cost-benefit analysis should precede any effort to
anonymize data.

Pyeongchang Winter Olympics was defended by drone-
catching drones
Authorities in South Korea have been preparing to defend the
Winter Olympics, that was held in Pyeongchang in February,
from drone-related terror attacks.
What goes up must come down, so it’s no surprise that a
counter-drone industry is emerging, dedicated to bringing
rogue pilots down to earth with a bump.
The rise of readily available flying robots was always going to
represent a safety risk. That risk is now more pronounced
than ever; many consumer-level drones are capable of
operating even while the pilot is sat miles away.

UK’s National Police need AI to help with surge in
evidential data
Quoted in The Guardian, Thornton suggested that the use of AI has
already led to several rape prosecutions being dropped, after mistakes
were made during earlier stages of the investigations.
For example, police had failed to hand over evidence that undermined
their cases, despite having a duty to pursue all reasonable lines of
enquiry, both for and against a conviction.
Although there have been suggestions of a “cultural problem” within the
police with regards to disclosure, Thornton suggested that the key issue
was the overwhelming amounts of data that forces now have to plough
through.
