Qualcomm’s Vision Intelligence Platform adds smarts
to its new IoT chipsets
Chip manufacturing giant Qualcomm has
launched its Vision Intelligence Platform
alongside its first two dedicated chipsets
for IoT devices.
The new 10nm chipsets, QCS605 and
QCS603, can be used for devices such as
drones, robotic vacuum cleaners, 360-
cameras, and more. Both contain
Qualcomm’s latest development in camera
and artificial intelligence.

Health IoT: New wearable can diagnose stomach
problems
The researchers claim that the new system is as
accurate at diagnosing some gastrointestinal
conditions as traditional methods are, but without any
need for invasive tests or examinations in clinical
settings. And it is much quicker.
Gastrointestinal (GI) problems are the second leading
cause for missing work or school in the US, and are
responsible for 10 percent of all patient visits to a
doctor. But, according to a UCSD and UC Berkeley
paper published in Nature, their prevalence is “at odds
with bottlenecks in their diagnosis, treatment, and
follow-up.”

Using a Home Test Kit and Smartphone to Test for
Kidney Disease
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF), Geisinger and
Healthy.io announced the launch of a novel clinical trial
using a smartphone-enabled home urinalysis device for
chronic kidney disease (CKD) among patients with high
blood pressure.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a contributing
risk factor to CKD. One of the best ways to test for
CKD and assess kidney damage is a simple urine test
which detects the presence of albumin. The
smartphone app from Healthy.io enables lay users to
conduct a urinalysis test at home and securely share
results with their clinicians.

FreeWave partners with McQ to offer low-power video
streaming
This means it doesn’t require Wi-Fi or cellular technology
at the camera, and can also be powered by solar, wind, or
fuel cells, eliminating the recurring costs of cellular
services and the challenge of limited Wi-Fi coverage in
many areas.
But the firms added that the solution could work equally
well in agricultural or oil machinery surveillance. It could
also be used for collecting data on volcanic activity,

US army develops battlefield AI for troop safety
▪ The researchers, who work at the US Army Research
Laboratory in Maryland, claim that the system can
help soldiers improve their skills 13 times faster than
conventional technologies, potentially saving lives at
the same time.
▪ With the machine-learning-powered solution,
soldiers are able to decipher battlefield information
more quickly, such as identifying explosive devices
or analysing images to locate potential threat zones.

for roadworks and the installation of V2X (Vehicle-to-

Semtech Corporation announced that Anatel, Brazil’s
National Telecommunications Agency, has released
new technical requirements for radio frequency (RF)

More than 2.5 billion records stolen or compromised in 2017
▪ Gemalto today released the latest findings of the
Breach Level Index, revealing that 2.6 billion records
were stolen, lost or exposed worldwide in 2017, an
88% increase from 2016.
▪ While data breach incidents decreased by 11%, 2017
was the first year publicly disclosed breaches
surpassed more than two billion compromised data
records since the Breach Level Index began tracking
data breaches in 2013.

Self-driving PODs to be trialled in Lake District national park
▪ Self-driving vehicles are being considered as part of
a sustainable transport strategy for the UK’s Lake
District.
▪ Autonomous, electric POD vehicles from British
motoring company Westfield are being brought to
Brockhole on Windermere this week for a public
test
▪ The Lake District is the first National Park and

Nearly half of UK manufacturers victims of cybercrime
▪ Nearly half (48 percent) of UK manufacturers have been
victims of a cyber attack, according to a new report. As a
result, the Cyber Security for Manufacturing report calls
for greater government support and a focus on the
security needs of factories.
▪ The paper, published by manufacturers’ organisation
EEF and AIG, and carried out by The Royal United
Services Institute (RUSI), surveyed 170 UK companies. It
found that 41 percent do not believe they have access to
enough information to even assess their levels of cyber
risk. Meanwhile, 45 percent feel that they lack access to
the right tools for the job.

IoT security: Half of IT departments don’t change
default passwords
Almost half (47 percent) of CIOs and IT managers have allowed
IoT devices onto their corporate network without changing
the default passwords – even though one of the first steps that
companies are advised to take with IoT devices is to change
security defaults.
A default password can be the easiest way for hackers to work
their way inside a network, causing potential damage not only
to individual devices and the IoT system, but also to the whole
organisation in terms of lost data or reputation.
