Building Awareness of
Occupational Hygiene
Mike Slater
BOHS President 2014/15
Approximately 13,000
deaths each year due
to occupational
diseases
An estimated 1.2 million
people who worked in
2012/13 were suffering
from a work-related illness
“Develop and deploy clear and
simple communication messages
about the purpose and value of
occupational hygiene”
“Engage with employer
associations, large companies and
regulators to promote the value
of hygiene and occupational
hygienists”
HOW ?
HOW ?
We decided to launch an Awareness
Campaign to increase understanding
of the scale of occupational ill-health
in the UK
Lessons learned
This presentation considers some of
the key lessons we’ve learned
Plan
Plan
Ensure that you have a clear plan setting out
clear objectives, desirable outcomes and
actions to achieve them
Identify
issues
Identify
audience
Engage with
stakeholders
Develop
messages
Focus
Focus
You can’t do everything!
Set ambitious, but realistic, objectives
• Respiratory disease
• Target the Construction industry
Why
Construction?
About 5 500 new
occupational
cancer cases in
construction
every year
over 500 workers
believed to die
from exposure to
silica dust every
year
76 000 cases of
work-related ill
health
Convert the need for
preventative ill-health
solutions into demand
Employers have the key role to play in
minimising health risks at work.
