Are You Ready for the August 30 Prop 65 Deadline?
Our New Video Can Help
Beginning August 30, new rules take effect for California Prop 65 warning
labels and signs. The changes are significant, but the Prop 65 office isn't
offering much guidance. The OEHHA directed us not to give any advice on
whether a sign is correct for a particular location or application, but we've
assembled a variety of resources to help you learn how to comply with the
new rule, including an informational video.
Watch the video and access Prop 65 resources here.
Top OSHA Fines Pass $4 Million from April to June
OSHA released information on 19 significant fines (over $100,000) in the
second quarter of 2018, averaging more than $212,000 each. Common
violations include trench, fall and electrical hazards. The top three fines
were:
$454,750 for trenching, other hazards on a North Dakota municipal
project
$389,685 court order against a Maine roofing company
$281,220 for safety and health hazards at a New York
manufacturer
See details and the full list.
What's New at ComplianceSigns.com
We now have hundreds of new California Prop 65 warning signs and
labels available to meet the August 30 deadline for new warning notices.
We've followed the official Prop 65 list to make it easy for you to find the
signs and labels you need for more than 800 chemicals, plus products and
places identified by California as hazardous.

OSHA Proposes Rule to Protect Worker Privacy
OSHA has proposed a rule to help protect workers’ identities. However,
this new rule would cut out parts of their existing “Improve Tracking of
Workplace Injuries and Illnesses” rule, a change that OSHA believes will
make their existing policy easier to comply with, and eliminates their
electronic submission requirement for Form 300 injury and illness logs.

The Road to Safer Highway Construction
Highway work zones are inherently dangerous for workers, which is why
great efforts have been devoted to improving work zone markings and
vehicle flow. But according to NIOSH, workers being hit by passing
motorists make up less than half of vehicle-related fatalities among
highway workers. In fact, highway workers are more likely to be killed by
construction vehicles operating in the worksite. A recent article offers
advice to help keep highway construction workers safe.

August Workplace Safety News & Notes
Here's a collection of safety news from around the web:
OSHA Extends Some Compliance Dates for Beryllium Standard
OSHA has extended the compliance date for specific ancillary requirements of the general industry beryllium
standard to Dec. 12, 2018. It affects only provisions for methods of compliance, beryllium work areas, regulated
areas, personal protective clothing and equipment, hygiene facilities and practices, housekeeping, communication
of hazards, and recordkeeping. Enforcement of new PELs for general industry, construction and shipyards, and the
general industry provisions for exposure assessment, respiratory protection, medical surveillance and medical
removal are unaffected by this rule. Read the notice.
Black Lung Increasing Among U.S. Coal Miners
One in ten underground coal miners who have worked in mines for at least 25 years were identified as having black
lung, according to a new report by NIOSH. Coal miners in central Appalachia are disproportionately affected with as
many as 1 in 5 having evidence of black lung - the highest level recorded in 25 years. Since 2000, the nationwide
prevalence of black lung has increased, especially in progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), the most severe form of
black lung disease. Read more.
Safety Pays Calculator Assess Impact of Injuries on Profitability
The OSHA Safety Pays tool uses your company's profit margin, the average costs of an injury or illness and an
indirect cost multiplier to project the amount of sales you would need to generate to cover those costs. The tool is
intended to raise awareness of how occupational injuries and illnesses can impact a company's profitability, not to
provide a detailed analysis of occupational injury and illness costs. Check it out here.
Safety Training vs. Safety Learning
A recent editorial piece in ISHN promotes a new approach to safety success. More companies now are engaged in
collaborative learning – part of the drive for greater worker engagement – and also a means to improve safety
performance. Training, coaching and mentoring will always be important in safety, but team collaboration may offer
even greater benefits. Read more.
Updated Bird Flu information from OSHA
OSHA’s recently updated Avian Influenza page provides information on protecting workers in egg and poultry
production, veterinary facilities, pet shops and food services who may be exposed to infectious birds or poultry
products. The page includes information on hand hygiene and good housekeeping, as well as recommended
precautions, such as PPE, for higher-risk occupations. Visit the avian influenza page.
