This presentation explores the relationship between the abstract concept of the invisible and the construction of architectural spaces. It discusses how spaces that are inherently invisible can be made visible through defining them with basic design elements like dots, lines and planes. Examples are given of how this technique is used to see patterns in the stars, planets and sounds that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The presentation argues that defining invisible spaces through structures helps us understand and experience the world around us.

2. THE VISIBLE
• We have been living according to things that are seen -
the things that come to us through the natural senses of
our body; the sense of touch, smell, taste, hearing and
sight.
• We consider something is visible, if we are able to at least
touch or see it but what about those things that we
cannot see, smell, touch, taste or hear? Things such as
space, light or even music. We consider them invisible,

3. We use these 5 senses, to explore our surrounding . We
can easily see the visible, as this sense is what we depend
on most. However, when it comes to the invisible, we can
only depend on the other four senses, hearing, touch,
smell, taste. Normally, using all this senses is perfectly
okay, but sometimes we want to use the sense of sight to
experience the space. But how do we achieve that?

4. MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE

5. SPACES
• The world around us is made up of spaces; Big
or Small, Fixed or Flexible, Linear or Distorted.
• No matter what form these spaces take, we are
able to see them hence they are VISIBLE. But
we have never stop to think what makes them
visible.
• A space is something that is abstract, it does
not have a physical form, it’s a idea rather than
a fact, so why when we are looking at a space
we can actually see it as if it is a physical being?
• The answer is simple because we defined the
space using a box, which helps us “see” and
even “feel’ the space.

6. -The experience of seeing space in its relationship
with matter is inherent in the gap between the
visible and invisible in architecture.

7. THE “BOX”
• The “Box” is a form realized using 3 basic design elements; Dots, Lines and Shapes (Plane).
• When the 3 elements combine, a form takes place and using this form we are now able to “see” spaces, it is a
human property or factor at which we used to help us constructed a space and visualized it.

8. THE CONSTRUCTION OF SPACES
• The formation of a space begins
with a single point or dot. By
joining one or more dot in any
manner, a line is formed. And
when these lines are joined
together end to end, a shape or
plane is composed. Lastly, with
any combination of these 3
elements, a space is constructed.

9. We uses this idea of construction of space to help defined the invisible around us on a daily basis, from understanding
the vast universe around us. The stars and the planets that co-exist with the one we call home – earth, we uses this
technic to see patterns and to define spaces.

11. By using stars as dots and joining these dots together, we classified groups of stars into what we call constellations.
With this we are able to defined the otherwise infinitely large universe into pieces that we are able to map out. The
same idea applies to planets, we use them as dots and join them together to defined spaces, for example we join the 8
planets surrounding the sun in a circular manner and call the space enclosed by them as the solar system. It helps us to
explore the world around us and put it together piece after piece to see the invisible design of nature. These helps us
record and keep track of the ever changing movement of stars and planets.

12. The same can also be said about an architectural space, just like the stars and planets. A space is not restricted
to a single form, it is a ever changing piece of art. This invisible construction is flexible and able to be shifted
and twisted into an infinite number of forms. Hence we draw and draft out each and every single space we
come across.

13. Not only does this idea helps define spaces. We also uses the same idea to help us ”see” things we other wise
can’t, from the sounds of music, the frequency of our voices, the tone of blowing wind to the rhythm of our
heartbeat by plotting them on paper or screens using dots and lines. It helps us to see the invisible pattern
that is unknown to human eyes.

15. Just like a sound wave with tone and pitch, a space evolves, they cut across, over and even into each other
on girds and point to form a orchestra of a spatial phenomenon. This idea of a evolving space, suggests that
a structure is not confined to the form that is visible to you, it is possible for a given structure to evolve into
another form that is currently invisible to us.

18. From the structure honeycomb, to the structure of our bones. From the shapes of snowflakes, to the planning
of town blocks. From the formation of water molecules, to the formation of cities. It is obvious that the idea
of a structure plays a significant role in our everyday life from personal, to cultural and even social life. We
uses the idea of structure to help us define something that is otherwise abstract. From this, new architecture
can be realized not only based upon accepted norms of modernity but also upon cultural context and origin.

20. Other than using the idea of structure to help us define something abstract, we also uses the elements of dots,
lines and shapes to help us create abstract yet stunningly beautiful design. These designs not only defines
spaces, they celebrate the very core beauty of the word abstract itself. They help us see the invisible, at the
same time retaining the beauty of it.

21. SUMMARY
• This presentation is a journey to explore the relationship between the idea of abstract, using the given
theme of invisible, in the form of structure and the construction of an interior/architectural space.
• At the start of this presentation, I addressed the idea of what makes a thing visible or invisible due to it
nature given state or properties.
• After which I’ve given an example of abstract structure, in this case being a defined space. Something
that is other wise invisible becoming visible by applying human factor to it.
• I also given a number of example of how we use the idea of defining space to help us with exploring the
world around us by making the invisible boundaries, visible. And how they are related to the idea of a
structure.
• Lastly, I bring up how the idea of construction using dots and lines is apply to fields that is beyond
design. Such as seeing the tone and pitch of sounds or the rhythm of our heartbeat, to the ideology of
how our personal, cultural and even social life should be constructed and visualized. And how they are
related to the idea of a structure.
