This document shows two indices that track investor fear and uncertainty - the JSCO Pain Index and the VIX Pain Index - plotted from November 2007 to June 2009 against the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The indices spike sharply higher from late 2008 through early 2009 when the stock market declined significantly, indicating that investor fear and uncertainty were extremely high during the financial crisis and recession.
