by an electrical conductor.

Propagation of Radio waves
Tendency of radio waves to
travel from one point to
another or into various parts of
atmosphere.
Modes of propagation
• No reflection, refraction or scattering
of waves between transmitter and
receiver
• Just line of sight communication
Modes of propagation
• Considerable distance between
transmitter and receiver.
• Due to the spherical nature of
earth there is no line of sight
• Reflected signals from the
ground do communication

• The wave gets reflected by the
charged particles in ionosphere.

• When wave reflects - Power of level is attenuated – signal degraded
• When wave hits - phase gets changed
Effects of multipath propagation
Radio waves reaching
the receiver in more
than one direction
may be Constructive
or Destructive
Fading
• Gradual loss of certain quality /
parameter and merely
disappears over a period of time.
• Variation of attenuation of signal
with various variables.
• These variables include time,
geographical position and radio
frequency.
• In wireless systems, fading may
be due to multipath propagation
, weather.

Propagation model
Propagation effects
• Reflection- occurs when the
propagating wave impinges on a
smooth object that has large
wavelength as compared to the
wavelength of the wave.
• Diffraction – occurs when there
are sharp edges between the
transmitter and the receiver. It
spreads all over the spaces and
creates bending of signal.
• Scattering – occurs when the
propagating wave impinges on a
rough surface or irregular
surfaces that have more number
of obstacles per unit volume.

mechanisms have different
effects on the propagating
radio waves.
