Introduction of Writer, his works, essay tradition and individual talent, theory of poetry( impersonality of poetry, historical sense, poetic emotion, comparison of Wordsworth and T.S eliot theory of poetry, objective correlative, dissociation of Sensibility, unification of sensibility, meta-physical poetry, conceit , use of Conceit in John Donne’s poetry.
An Apology for Poetry[7] (also known as A Defence of Poesie and The Defence of Poetry) – Sidney wrote the Defence before 1583. It is generally believed that he was at least partly motivated by Stephen Gosson, a former playwright who dedicated his attack on the English stage, The School of Abuse, to Sidney in 1579, but Sidney primarily addresses more general objections to poetry, such as those of Plato. In his essay, Sidney integrates a number of classical and Italian precepts on fiction. The essence of his defence is that poetry, by combining the liveliness of history with the ethical focus of philosophy, is more effective than either history or philosophy in rousing its readers to virtue. The work also offers important comments on Edmund Spenser and the Elizabethan stage. from wikipidea
Poetry, he wrote in the Preface, originates from ‘the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings’ which is filtered through ‘emotion recollected in tranquillity’.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

7. What is Plath famous for?
• Her semi-autobiographical novel, The Bell Jar, depicts a
talented woman slowly descending into insanity. It is also
a standard for feminist literature.
•
• Quotes from the novel:
• - “If you expect nothing from anybody you won’t ever be
disappointed.”
• - “The silence depressed me. It wasn’t the silence of
silence. It was my own silence.”
• - “If neurotic is wanting two mutually exclusive things at
one time and the same time, then I’m neurotic as hell.”
• - “The trouble was, I had been inadequate all along, I
simply hadn’t thought about it.”
8. Plath’s struggle with depression
• Throughout her life, Plath struggled with
depression.
• Because of her emotional state, Plath was
institutionalized and underwent shock therapy,
which drove her to greater emotional strife.
•
• In addition to her alleged suicide attempt when
she was 10, she tried to kill herself when she was
19.
9. Recurring Themes
• While Plath’s hundreds of poems focused on different
topics, there are three themes that recur throughout
her work, often in conjunction with one another:
•
• 1. She used her poems to confess
• 2. She often wrote of overwhelming male
(father/husband) figures
• 3. Birth is also a subject common to her works.
•
10. Plath on confessional poetry
• "I think my poems immediately come out of the
sensuous and emotional experiences I have, but I
must say I cannot sympathize with these cries
from the heart that are informed by nothing
except a needle or a knife, or whatever it is. I
believe that one should be able to control and
manipulate experiences, even the most terrifying,
like madness, being tortured, this sort of
experience, and one should be able to
manipulate these experiences with an informed
and intelligent mind."*
11. What is Confessional Poetry?
• Confessional poetry uses the “I.” It often deals
with subjects not often written about publicly:
death, trauma, depression.
12.
13. “I’ll never speak to God again—”
• Plath was devastated by her father’s death
believing that he could have prevented his
death if he actually seeked treatment. She
often compared his death to suicide.
• When she was 10 years old, Plath allegedly
tried to cut her own throat and engaged in
what is now called “cutting.”*
• In her poem “Daddy,” Plath wrote, “At twenty,
I tried to die / And get back, back, back to you.
14. Ted Hughes
• Born in 1930 and died in 1998.
• Became British Poet Laureate in 1984 and remained so until his
death and is continually called one of the most influential British
writers of the 20th Century.
• Early in his career, Hughes focused on nature and the violence of it,
and later on in his career became a modernist poet and often
focused on mythological archetypes.
• He and Sylvia Plath married in 1956
and had two children.
•
15. Sylvia plath: her importance to American
literature
• Sylvia Plath’s importance in American history is derived
from the literary excellence of her writing, and her
works show the plight of mid-twentieth century
women. Plath's significance comes from her role as a
poet and the ways in which her writing opened the
door for exploration of a feminist-martyr to patriarchal
society, as well as the treatment of psychiatric patients.
• As a post-World War Two confessional poet, or a poet
who wrote based on a personal attachment to her
work, Plath’s life can be explored through her poetry
and stories. By aligning the works of Sylvia Plath
alongside the events in her life, one is better able to
understand the poet's importance to American history.
