Advanced Research Projects Agency
(ARPANET )expiring officially in 1989.
•This came about because the
internet consists of various sub-
networks.
•These networks are each owned,
controlled and financed individually.

• The web began in the late 1980’s as a
European project .
• It proposed a system of using documents that
had links to other related documents on
various computers.
• The links could guide one from one computer
to another using facilities of the internet.

• The Internet refers is the TCP/IP availed by the physical
hardware (cables, computers, etc) connect of the
global network.
– TCP/P-Set of rules for communicating over ARPANet
– TCP/IP manages communication between applications

• World Wide Web(Web or WWW) refers to the data and
information that is made available on the global network.
• Locate and view multimedia-based documents on almost any
subject
– Early development begun in 1989 at CERN by Tim Berners-Lee
– Technology for sharing information via hyperlinked text
documents
– HyperText Markup Language (HTML)
• Defines documents on WWW
– Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
• Communications backbone used to transfer documents across

• Use of URL which shows the location of then
Web.
• The hypertext links emanating from a Web
page provide built-in associations to other
pages.
• Search engines allow users to state the kind of
information they hope to and then furnish
information that hopefully relates to that
description.

A web site is, traditionally, a collection
of pages of information.
Characteristics of Websites
•The pages are saved in a special
format (ie, language) known as HTML.
•Web pages are saved onto the
webserver.

NB:A web server is simply a normal computer,
connected to the internet, which runs a web
server program.
This program means that other people's
computers across the internet can connect to
it, request a copy of your page, and display it.

• These are programs that help to read web
sites .
Example, Internet Explorer, Firefox, mosaic,
Safari, Google Chrome, or Opera.
• The only type of information that web
browsers are guaranteed to be able to display
are HTML files.

• To access data on the internet needed one to
be conversant with many commands.
• In 1993, a new web browser called mosaic was
developed.
• It enabled users to access the internet via a
GUI.
• The transmission of sound and video over the
internet was enabled.
