2. Introduction
• Community are as varied and individual as its members.
• Often people belongs to two or more communities.
Family,education,business,work, sport, religion, culture all
involve communities that we take for granted as a normal part of
our lives.
3. Definition
According to WHO 1947
“ A community as a social group determined by geographical
boundaries and common values and interest. Its member know and
interact with each other. It functions within a particular social
structure and exhibits and creats certain norms,values and social
institution. The individual belongs to the broader society through his
family and community.”
4. Components of Community
The sociologist Hillery 1955 determined the four common cpmponents
of community such as

2. Common goals
3. Place
4. Social interaction.
5. Definition
by Alma-Ata Declaration (1978)
“Community health means providing primary health facilities with the
aim to achieve Health for All.”

“Community health refers to
the health Status of the
members of the community, to
the problems affecting their
health and to the totality of
health care provided to the
community.”
7. Functions of Community Health
• The assessment and monitoring of the health of
communities and population at risk to identify health
problems and priorities.
• The formulation of public policies designed to solve
identified local and national health problems and priorities.
• To assure that whole population must access to appropriate
and cost-effective care, including health promotion and
disease prevention services and evaluation of the
effectiveness of that care.
9. Characteristics of Community Health Nursing
• It is a field of nursing.
• It combines public health and nursing services.
• It focus on population and environment factors that may impact to
people’s health.
• It emphasize in health promotion, illness prevention, and
wellness.
• It promotes client responsibility and self-care.
• It involves inter-professional collaboration.
People : people are important component of a community who gives the identity to particular community.
Common goals: Community has common goals and needs by which people seek and get the health services and fulfil the other needs.
Place : Geographic location and boundries are certain aspects of community. A community is more than just a place. Just physically living in a specific area does not make you a part of the community.
Social Inerction : social ineraction can come in many forms ,from visiting and interacting with neighbours to organized events. Common ties can include items such as schools and sports as well as social or environmental issues.
