Introducing the 4 C’s

Skills for the 21st
Century
Students must have formal education, but to be
successful in the 21st
century, students also
need to learn important skills that apply to all
subjects and all careers.
We call them The 4C’s.

• Communication
• Critical Thinking
• Collaboration
• Creativity

• Helps prepare students for the 21st
century global job market
• Identified by employers as lacking
but most needed
• Keys to Innovation

Communication - Definition
“The act or process of using words, sounds,
signs, or behaviors to express or exchange
information or to express your ideas,
thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone”
~ Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Communication
• Articulate thoughts and ideas in a variety of
forms and contexts
• Listen to decipher meaning
• Inform, instruct, motivate and persuade
• Utilize multiple media and technologies

Why is Communication Important?
• Is a choice
• It starts with you
• Effective communicators display
compassion, empathy, humility and
respect
• It is the fabric of life
• You cannot not communicate

Critical Thinking - Definition
“Focused organized thinking about such
things as the logical relationships among
ideas, the soundness of evidence, and the
difference between fact and opinion.”

Critical Thinking - Reasoning
• Use inductive and deductive reasoning
• Analyze evidence, arguments, claims and
beliefs
• Evaluate major alternative points of view
• Synthesize information and arguments
• Interpret information and draw conclusions
• Reflect critically on learning experiences
• Make judgments and decisions

Critical Thinking – Problem Solving
• Solve different kinds of non-familiar problems
in conventional and innovative ways
• Ask significant questions that clarify various
points of view and lead to better solutions

Why is Critical Thinking Important?
• Helps us learn from experience
• Helps prevent mistakes from
recurring
• Helps produce reasonable, effective
solutions
• Promotes open-mindedness
• Puts things in perspective
• Helps us balance our emotions

Collaboration - Definition
“To work with another person or group in order
to achieve or do something.”
~ Merrian-Webster Dictionary

Collaboration
• Work effectively and respectfully with others
• Share information, responsibility and
accountability
• Be willing to negotiate and compromise to
accomplish a common goal
• Value individual contributions made by each
team member

Why is Collaboration Important?
• Leads to deeper understanding and
learning
• Helps to solve complex problems
• Provides different perspectives
• TEAM – Together Each
Accomplishes More

Creativity - Definition
“The ability to make new things
or think of new ideas.”
~ Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Creativity
• Utilize idea creation techniques
• Incorporate dreams, visions & ideas
• Entertain new and diverse perspectives
• Realize practical limitations
• Understand that creativity is an iterative
process that consists of successes and
failures

Why is Creativity Important?
• Creativity is what sets man apart
from animals
• Can result in improvement
• It is the source of new ideas
• Inspiration
• Makes lemonade out of lemons
• Self-expression

• Communication
• Critical Thinking
• Collaboration
• Creativity
