Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system that stores data in tabular format of columns and rows. It has four major components: the Database Engine for storing and retrieving data efficiently; Integration Services (SSIS) for extracting, transforming, and loading data from various sources into destinations; Analysis Services (SSAS) for creating multi-dimensional data structures and performing analysis and data mining; and Reporting Services (SSRS) for generating reports from different tables in various formats like PDF and maps. The SELECT statement is used to retrieve data and has clauses like FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, and ORDER BY. Proper use of filters and indexes in the WHERE clause is important for query performance.
This document provides an introduction to database management systems (DBMS) and SQL Server. It discusses what a database is and where databases are used. Microsoft SQL Server internals & architectureKevin Kline
From noted SQL Server expert and author Kevin Kline - Let’s face it. You can effectively do many IT jobs related to Microsoft SQL Server without knowing the internals of how SQL Server works. Many great developers, DBAs, and designers get their day-to-day work completed on time and with reasonable quality while never really knowing what’s happening behind the scenes. But if you want to take your skills to the next level, it’s critical to know SQL Server’s internal processes and architecture. This session will answer questions like:
- What are the various areas of memory inside of SQL Server?
- How are queries handled behind the scenes?
- What does SQL Server do with procedural code, like functions, procedures, and triggers?
- What happens during checkpoints? Lazywrites?
- How are IOs handled with regards to transaction logs and database?
- What happens when transaction logs and databases grow or shrinks?
This fast paced session will take you through many aspects of the internal operations of SQL Server and, for those topics we don’t cover, will point you to resources where you can get more information.
MS SQL Server is a database server produced by Microsoft that enables users to write and execute SQL queries and statements. It consists of several features like Query Analyzer, Profiler, and Service Manager. Multiple instances of SQL Server can be installed on a machine, with each instance having its own set of users, databases, and other objects. SQL Server uses data files, filegroups, and transaction logs to store database objects and record transactions. The data dictionary contains metadata about database schemas and is stored differently in Oracle and SQL Server.
The document provides an overview of SQL Server including:
- The architecture including system databases like master, model, msdb, and tempdb.
- Recovery models like full, bulk-logged, and simple.
- Backup and restore options including full, differential, transaction log, and file group backups.
- T-SQL system stored procedures for administration tasks.
- SQL commands and functions.
- SQL Agent jobs which are scheduled tasks consisting of steps to perform automated tasks.
The document introduces common data types in SQL such as char, varchar, int, numeric, and date. It describes how to create databases and tables using SQL statements like CREATE DATABASE, CREATE TABLE, INSERT INTO, and ALTER TABLE. It also covers SQL queries using SELECT, FROM, WHERE, ORDER BY, LIKE and other clauses to retrieve and filter data from one or more tables.
This document provides information about SQL queries and joins. It begins by introducing SQL (Structured Query Language) which is used to communicate with databases and retrieve required information. It describes the basic CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) functions of SQL. It then discusses different types of SQL queries - aggregate function queries, scalar function queries, and join queries. It provides the syntax and explanation of inner joins, outer joins (left, right, full) which are used to query data from multiple tables based on relationships between columns. The document is presented by Hammad, Bilal and Awais.
A database is a collection of related data organized into tables. Data is any raw fact or statistic, and is important because all decisions depend on underlying data. A database management system (DBMS) is used to organize data into tables to avoid problems with file-based storage like inconsistency, redundancy, integrity issues, and security problems. It allows for concurrent access. DBMS are widely used in real-world applications like movie theaters, prisons, and banks to manage related information. A table in a database contains records organized into rows with attributes or fields forming the columns. A key uniquely identifies each record.
The document discusses various disaster recovery strategies for SQL Server including failover clustering, database mirroring, and peer-to-peer transactional replication. It provides advantages and disadvantages of each approach. It also outlines the steps to configure replication for Always On Availability Groups which involves setting up publications and subscriptions, configuring the availability group, and redirecting the original publisher to the listener name.
Maintenance Plans for Beginners | Each of experienced administrators used (to some extent) what is called Maintenance Plans - Plans of Conservation. During this session, I'd like to discuss what can be useful for us to provide functionality when we use them and what to look out for. Session at 200 times the forward-300, with the opening of the discussion.

Do you know what Copy Data is? Do you know how it consumes your life? You should know, how 1TB of database can translate to almost 2PB. What if you have to restore these databases; at the drop of a hat. This chat helps you do it.
The document discusses tempdb, a system database in SQL Server that is used to store temporary objects. It covers topics like restrictions on tempdb, what takes up space in tempdb such as queries and triggers, best practices for allocating and configuring tempdb files, using trace flags to improve performance, minimizing usage of tempdb to avoid contention, and tips for correctly configuring tempdb.
This document discusses copy data management and provides an overview of copy data. It defines copy data as copies of production databases used for disaster recovery, development/testing, business intelligence, and archiving. The document then discusses the challenges of "copy data sprawl" and compares various methods for obtaining copy data like replication, log shipping, mirroring, snapshots, and copy data virtualization. Key advantages and disadvantages of each method are provided. The document concludes with a bibliography and invitation for questions.
As geeks we often get stranded in our cubes. This presentation gives you variety of ways in which you can Network, Network successfully and market yourself.
Over the past many years, I have only come across very limited DBAs who actually openly admit use of third party tools that make their lives easier. Otherwise most DBAs find pleasure in writing complex queries to do routine stuff like backups, maintenance, monitoring; you name it.
I would like to share my experience as a DBA, where I have used tools unashamedly to improve my productivity.
Hopefully after this session, you will find the same confidence in using third party tools. Then, use the time saved, to enhance your career.
In this session we will discuss, various methods to analyse possible criminal actions/accidents and pin point it to a specific person/group of persons and time/time frame.
We will discuss the goals of a forensic investigation, define breaches, types of breaches and how to verify them. We will also learn about various database file formats, methodology of forensic investigation, collection and analysis of artifacts. We will take a look at native SQL methods.
We will also cover what artifacts to collect and why.
We will also cover a couple of third party tools available in the market. Understand why it is not always easy to use these tools.
Can we retrace the DML/DDL statements and possibly undo the harm?
We will also learn how to preserve the evidence, how to setup HoneyPots.
We will also look at the Initial and Advanced Response Toolkit. How to use SQL Binaries to determine hack.
As IT personnel, we tend to get boxed-in, stranded on our own little island. We fail to make people aware of our activities, both within our own organization and in our wider professional circles. Just like a shipwrecked captain waiting for the rescue boat on a desert island, if you fail to communicate, your career will be stuck with no possibility of progression. This presentation will show you how to leverage networking and self-marketing techniques that will allow you to set sail off the island and into new opportunities. http://wcompute.org/2012/05/19/review-of-sqlsaturday-142-network-or-perish/

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

Hand Rolled Applicative User ValidationCode KataPhilip Schwarz
Could you use a simple piece of Scala validation code (granted, a very simplistic one too!) that you can rewrite, now and again, to refresh your basic understanding of Applicative operators <*>, <*, *>?
The goal is not to write perfect code showcasing validation, but rather, to provide a small, rough-and ready exercise to reinforce your muscle-memory.
Despite its grandiose-sounding title, this deck consists of just three slides showing the Scala 3 code to be rewritten whenever the details of the operators begin to fade away.
The code is my rough and ready translation of a Haskell user-validation program found in a book called Finding Success (and Failure) in Haskell - Fall in love with applicative functors.
