• Genetics = the study of how characteristics are
  passed from parents to offspring

• Trait = a characteristic that is inherited

• Allele = alternative DNA sequences for a given
  gene. For example, the eye color gene has
  blue, green, and brown alleles

• You have 2 alleles for each gene (1 from mom,
  1 from dad)
• Dominant alleles = If you have 1 or 2 copies of
  a dominant allele, you will show the dominant
  trait
• Dominant alleles = If you have 1 or 2 copies of
  a dominant allele, you will show the dominant
  trait
• Recessive allele = You must have 2 copies for
  the recessive allele in order to show the
  recessive trait
• Dominant alleles = If you have 1 or 2 copies of
  a dominant allele, you will show the dominant
  trait
• Recessive allele = You must have 2 copies for
  the recessive allele in order to show the
  recessive trait
• Example: In pea plants, purple flowers (P) are
  dominant to white flowers (p). Therefore:
  PP = purple Pp = purple           pp = white
