Responsibilities of Business : • Milton Friedman ( 1970) “There is one and only one social responsibility of business–to use it resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud."
  • 8. • Jamsetji Tata ( 1839 – 1904) “In a free enterprise, the community is not just another stakeholder in business, but in fact, the very purpose of its existence.”
  • 9. Dorab Tata “To my father the acquisition of wealth was only a secondary object in life; it was always subordinate to the constant desire in his heart to improve the industrial and intellectual con dition of the people of his nation.” Ratan Tata “Jamsetji set the mandate for the group to look beyond profits and serve the communities in which Tata companies functioned. More than hundred years later, his vision remains the group’s guiding force.”

  • 12. CONCLUSIONS • In the present time , businesses have to factor societal considerations in their strategies and operations. • Business and Society are not pitted against each other. • This paradigm shift can be a source of opportunity , innovation and competitive advantage
  • 13. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY HAS MOVED FROM PERIPHERY TO CENTRE IN CONTEXT OF BUSINESS OPEARTIONS.
  • 14. Any business that pursues its end at the expense of the society in which it operates will find its success to be illusory and ultimately temporary.
