There are three main types of music videos: narrative based, performance based, and concept based. Narrative based videos tell a story that relates to the song's lyrics through actors or the singer, such as U2's "Song for Someone." Performance based videos feature the artist singing and entertaining an audience, like 30 Seconds to Mars' "Closer to the Edge." Concept based videos may not relate directly to the lyrics and focus more on a theme, such as Michael Jackson's "Black or White." Additional video types include animated, interpretive, impressionist, surrealist, inter-textual, and alluding.

3. Narrative Based video
A narrative based video is a video that shows us a story
line behind the song, The video itself has a meaning
behind it in a narrative based video. The song narrates the
video and the audience gets to know what exactly is the
meaning of the video with the song playing in the
background. These kind of videos sometimes features
Actors or the singer itself to portray the story.
An example is :
"Song for someone" by U2 starring Woody Harrelson
directed by Vincent Haycock.
Narrative based videos are often found when they feature
footage from a film.

4. Performance Based video
A Performance based video is a video where we see
that a singer or a band is performing in the video, In
these kinds of videos the artists are dancing, lip
syncing and shows a fun side of themselves by
entertaining the audience. This is a good example to
promote a star image . These videos are also cheap.
During the video we can see different shots of the
performance and the live audience that is featured
inside the video.
An example is :
"Closer to the Edge" by the band 30 seconds to Mars.
This music video shows us different clips of their
tours, them performing for their live audience and
interacting with them, it also shows a lot and different
shots of the artist as well as some clips from behind
the scenes.

5. Concept Based Video
Concept based music videos usually
have no story line, and sometimes
have little or no relation to the meaning
of the lyrics being sung or the artist
singing them. This kind of video usually
are based around a certain concept.
An example for this is:
" Black or White" by Michael Jackson
This music video is also an example of
both Narrative and Performance
based.

pictures and clips mostly taken out from films

8. Interpretive music videos are where the
lyrics for the song tells you exactly what
is going on in the music video

“ Just the way you
lie”

9. A impressionist video is where they take
inspiration from lots of different sources in the
media, or just an idea that they have on
something.
An example is from Red Hot Chili Peppers “Dani
California”

10. These types of videos are very dreamy and
artistic. Also they are very much similar to
Impressionist videos.
An example is “Like a Prayer” by Madonna

11. Inter-texuality is the way in which one
media text is referred in another
An example is from Lady Gaga’s “
Paparazzi”

12. An allusion is simply a reference to
something
An example is “The Kill” by 30 seconds to
Mars
