late 80s, but now something is changing thanks t o s p e c i a l i s e d , o f ten cheap, 
technologies.

“ p l a t formized” technological environment.

I n i t s “ D i s r uptive t e chnologies: Advances that will transform l i fe, business, and 
the global economy” (May 2013 ) , McKinsey Global Institute lists Inter n e t o f 
Things among the technologies that could drive tr uly massive economic 
transformations and disr uptions in the coming years. 
According to McKinsey, Internet of Things wi l l have an economic impact of $2.7 
trillion to $6.2 trillion annually by 2025. 
Key appl icat ions wi l l be in process automations, ef ficient use of natural 
resources (smart - g r i d c o n t r o l o f w a t e r a n d e l e c t r i c i t y ) , remote health-care 
delivery, sensor-enhanced business models.
