4. Introduction
What is IoT? (3A concept)
‘‘3A concept: anytime, anywhere and any media, resulting into
sustained ratio between radio and man around”
Ref: Srivastava, L., 2006. Pervasive, ambient, ubiquitous: the magic of radio. In:
Proceedings of European Commission Conference ‘‘From RFID to the Internet of
Things, Bruxelles, Belgium.

10. Compatibility and Interoperability of Different
IoT systems
40% to 60% of the total values lies on the ability to achieve interoperability
between different IoT systems.
With numerous vendors, OEMs, and service providers, it becomes really difficult
to maintain interoperability between different IoT systems.
Not every machine is equipped with advanced sensors and networking capabilities
to effectively communicate and share data.

Identification and Authentication of Technologies
20 billion connected devices at present, and to connect all the devices involves a
lot of security risks and not just complexity.
Challenges of IoT
11. Integration of IoT Products with IoT Platforms
Integrate various IoT connected products with right IoT platforms.
Lack of proper integration could lead to abnormalities in functions
and efficiency to deliver value to the customers.
It is vital to understand integration is a crucial IoT competency.

Connectivity
A global mobile satellite company Inmarsat revealed that 24% finds
connectivity issue as the one of the biggest challenges in IoT
deployment.
The quality of signals collected by the sensors and to transmit over
to the Networks largely depend upon the routers, LAN, MAN, and
WAN.
Challenges of IoT
12. Handling Unstructured Data
Growing connected devices will increase the challenges of handling unstructured data on
the parameters of volume, velocity, and variety.
80% of today’s data is unstructured data and so the data cannot be stored in SQL format.
The unstructured data is stored in NoSQL format makes retrieval of data a bit complex.
Hadoop and Cassandra, helped in handling unstructured data which has somewhat reduced
in complexity of Data.

Data Security and Privacy Issues
A latest research claims that by 2020, 25% of cyber attacks will target IoT devices.
•Malware infiltration: 24%
•Phishing attacks: 24%
•Social engineering attacks: 18%
•Device misconfiguration issues: 11%
•Privilege escalation: 9%
•Credential theft:6%
Challenges of IoT

15. Research Directions contd.,
Privacy preservation with fake /redundant data
Privacy management through policies
Privacy management through policy awareness to users
Privacy management through user control :
○ Access control request through user
○ Enable /disable service when not necessary
Privacy management in the network :
○ In network processing and redundant information

16. Energy efficient secure algorithms for edge devices
To reach the goal of building Edge Computing architectures for Smart Energy
environments, several lines of research have been defined.
In the future, such architectures will overcome current problems, becoming highly
energy-efficient, cost-effective, and capacitated to process and respond in real-
time.

End to end data encryption technique to avoid
vulnerability at Gateways
Gateways are an important part of an IoT ecosystem but are a
vulnerable, single point of hackability.
Research Directions
17. Inter-fog resource sharing to avoid fog to cloud
communication for processing at heavy load
Centralised data-centres (a.k.a. Cloud computing), becomes impractical solution
for IoT data due to the long distance between the data source and designated data-
center.
Network topology have been evolved to permit data processing at the edge of the
network, introducing what so-called “Fog computing”.
29-06-2020Dept. of Research & Innovation, IAT
17
AI and ML at Fog for identifying retain /discard/shift the data
concepts like the truly connected car, super-smart home, cutting-edge next-
generation retail business, and digital industries with the inclusion of artificial
intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)
Research Directions
18. Data analytics with predictive system for identifying
attacks
Attack and anomaly detection in the Internet of Things (IoT)
infrastructure is a rising concern in the domain of IoT.
Denial of Service, Data Type Probing, Malicious Control, Malicious
Operation, Scan, Spying and Wrong Setup are such attacks and
anomalies which can cause an IoT system failure.

18
Privacy preservation with fake /redundant data
privacy is a core requirement in any IoT ecosystem and is a major
concern that inhibits its widespread user adoption.
