The largest network of networks in the
world.
A

global network that allows one computer to
connect with other computers via dedicated
routers and servers by using IP. Along with IP
most computers communicate with TCP so it is
called TCP/IP.
Father
of
Internet.

From Dr. Vinton Cerf,
Co-Creator of TCP/IP
 Each

computer on Internet .
 Million number of hosts are connected by
cables, phone lines, satellite connections.
Each host computer on the Internet has a unique IP
address.
Format: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(x from 0 to 255)
The survey says that 4,294,967,296 possible IP
addresses are available on the Internet.

USE:
It identifies the host computer so that packets of
information reach the correct computer.

People acquire wrong information

The internet is most convenient and fast system in the
world. However , there are some websites may not
have hundreds percent true information e.g.
Wikipedia. It provides useful information and articles
but it also can let people write and change
information with their own ideas , then the
information may not be accurate. Some people will
read the wrong information. When people upload
information, the editors of Wikipedia need to delete
the wrong information, it may take days, weeks or
even months. During the “Time Gap”, people will get
When the internet becomes so
popular, more and more people
create their own web pages and
express their opinions and send
out information through social
networking website like Face
book, yahoo etc. Some people

1957, USSR launches the first artificial earth
satellite - Sputnik.
 In 1958, US forms the Advanced Research
Projects Agency (ARPA)
 ARPA directly reports to the US Department of
Defense (DoD) and develops state-of-the-art
technology in order to maintain the leading
military research position.

The 1st Packet-Switching (PS) paper
was presented in 1961.

 1967: Lawrence Roberts of ARPA

publishes plan for the first
computer network system – the
ARPANET
 Packet switches were needed.

Called Interface Message
Processors (IMP), the contract
was awarded to BBN
 Oct 1969: IMPs installed in

UCLA, Stanford, UCSB and Utah

 The

software was
split into two parts:
subnet and host.
The subnet software
consisted of the IMP
end of the host-IMP
connection, the
IMP-IMP protocol,
and a source IMP to
destination IMP
protocol designed to
improve reliability
The original ARPANET design.
Roberts had a problem: the hosts needed software too.

To deal with it, he convened a meeting of
network researchers, mostly graduate
students, at Snowbird, Utah, in the
summer of 1969. The graduate students
expected some network expert to explain
the grand design of the network and its
software to them and then to assign each
of them the job of writing part of it.
They were astounded when there was no
network expert and no grand design.
They had to figure out what to do on
their Own.
somehow an experimental network
went on the air in December 1969
with four nodes: at UCLA, UCSB,
SRI, and the University of Utah.
These four were chosen because all
had a large number of ARPA
contracts, and all had different and
completely incompatible host
computers
 Nodes

are connected by AT&T 50kbps lines.
 Node 1: University of California Los Angeles
(UCLA), Host is SDS SIGMA7
 Node 2: Stanford Research Institute (SRI),
Host is SDS940
 Node 3: University of California Santa
Barbara (UCSB), Host is IBM 360/75
 Node 4: University of Utah, Host is DEC

the ARPANet was intended to connect only military installations and universities
participating in government projects


by 1971, 18 sites were connected; most used Interface Message Processors (IMPs) which
allowed up to 4 terminal connections at the site



sites labeled with a T utilized Terminal Interface Processors (TIPs), which allowed up to 64
terminal connections at the site

49


by 1980, close to 100 sites were connected to the ARPANet


satellite connections provided links to select cities outside the continental U.S.

ARPANET was shut down in 1990
However, the Internet has attracted much
attention to the business world
Commercial Internet backbones were
established to replace ARPANET
They become the current Internet

  • 31. Not Truthful. People acquire wrong information The internet is most convenient and fast system in the world. However , there are some websites may not have hundreds percent true information e.g. Wikipedia. It provides useful information and articles but it also can let people write and change information with their own ideas , then the information may not be accurate. Some people will read the wrong information. When people upload information, the editors of Wikipedia need to delete the wrong information, it may take days, weeks or even months. During the “Time Gap”, people will get

  • 42. Roberts had a problem: the hosts needed software too. To deal with it, he convened a meeting of network researchers, mostly graduate students, at Snowbird, Utah, in the summer of 1969. The graduate students expected some network expert to explain the grand design of the network and its software to them and then to assign each of them the job of writing part of it. They were astounded when there was no network expert and no grand design. They had to figure out what to do on their Own.
