The Treaty of Paris ended the Spanish-American War and was signed on December 10, 1898. It had 17 articles that provided terms for peace such as Spain relinquishing control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and ceding ownership of Guam and the Philippines to the United States. The treaty was preceded by an August 12, 1898 protocol between the U.S. and Spain to appoint peace commissions to negotiate the terms of the treaty in Paris by October 1st.
