The Demilitarization Of Japan
The postwar program for Japan was complicated in some ways but then again it was all there to
rebuild the Japanese economy and make things more peaceful. One thing that was created was
called demilitarization. This was a program that was important to the post war program for may
reasons. Demilitarization is the process of disbanding a nations armed forces. In this case it was
Japanese. MacArthur who created this was very quick to achieve this goal and he left Japan with
only small police forces. Everyone knew that Japan was a very aggressive fighting nation. Their
military had fueled so much hatred in WWII which led to them being defeated brutally many times.
For example when the US had sent atomic bombs they knew Japan was full of

Loss Of Innocence In Laurie Halse Anderson s The Joy Luck...
In all our lives, there is a fall from innocence. A time after which, we are never the same. Stand
By Me. Innocence can be found at any age or any point in one s life. It means chastity, freedom
from wrong, lack of knowledge, SIMPLICITY. When one has innocence the world seems easy
without any worries, however that can all change when one loses their innocence. The loss of
innocence can feel as though one has fallen into a black hole and can never escape, darkness,
voicelessness, LONELINESS. In Amy Tan s The Joy Luck Club, Nadine Gordimer s Once Upon a
Time , and Laurie Halse Anderson s Speak, the authors use main and supporting characters to
show a loss of innocence at a young age. In The Joy Luck Club loss of innocence is expressed
through the old woman from the fourth parable, Queen Mother of the Western Skies . In Once
Upon a Time loss of innocence is expressed through the young boy. In Speakloss of innocence is
expressed though Melinda. Although all three of these characters go through the same struggle of
loss of innocence, Anderson s character Melinda is able to come to terms with her loss and regain
her strength. In these three stories, Tan, Gordimer, and Anderson use the theme of loss of
innocence to portray loneliness, fear, and barriers to show how one can learn from past experiences.
In the fourth parable Queen Mother of the Western Skies , Tan uses the old woman to show her
loss of innocence through flashbacks to her youth. As she plays with her granddaughter, the old
woman wonders what she will teach the child. She sees the baby laughing and the old woman
recalls that she too was once free and innocent , laughing for pure enjoyment (213). However, as
time went on she threw away her foolish innocence to protect herself (213). As a result, when she
had a daughter, she taught her daughter to do the same and shed her innocence (213). The old
woman wonders if telling her daughter to do so was wrong, for now she can recognize the evil in
the world. She calls the baby as if she is a high and mighty spirit named Syi Wang Mu , Queen
Mother of the Western Skies and asks her to answer her question. Continuing to call her
granddaughter the Queen,

Extra Credit Better: A Surgeon s Notes on Performance
Chapter 1: On Washing Hands
Mr. Gawande starts his literature on washing hands. He introduces two friends a microbiologist and
an infectious disease specialist. Both work hard and diligently against the spread of diseases just
like Semmelweis who is mentioned in the chapter. Something I learned, that not many realize, is
that each year two million people acquire an infection while they are in the hospital. Mainly because
the clinicians only wash their hands one third to one half as many times as they should.
Semmelweis, mentioned earlier, concluded in 1847 that doctors themselves were to blame for
childbed fever, which was the leading cause of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By analyzing the patterns of injuries and treatment, other basic life saving measures were
implemented. For example, soldiers coming into treatment were found to be without their Kevlar.
When asked why? They would complain about the weight, the heat, and the discomfort. Orders
were issued that Kevlar was to be taken seriously and the injuries became less frequent. Gawande
s point is that reporting is vital to diligence just as it was for the WHO supervisor fighting malaria;
these doctors recorded the details and results of each case. They understand, as Gawande writes,
that vigilance over the details of their own performance offered the only chance to do better.
Chapter 4: Naked
The chapter is titled Naked and concerns the exam room etiquette that doctors and patients expect
from one another and often uncomfortably tiptoe around. There is an allusion to a movie that has
the female patient separated by a dark blanket like screen from the doctor. The doctor s son who is
about six years old is the communicator. Even though they are clearly audible to each other they
wait until the boy speaks to them. This is the matter of decency. According to this literature some
doctors feel uncomfortable with the whole process. There is really no

Apologetics Reflection Essay
Although I have always thought of myself as an outspoken and strongly rooted person, this
semester changed the way I thought about Christianity, the Bible, and truth. While this course is
called Apologetics, it delves into much deeper issues than just that. I learned in this short semester
that I might not know myself and God as well as I thoughtI did. On the first day of school, I walked
into the classroom after the second bell, already deeply apprehensive. My own father would be
teaching my bible class, something very few students get to experience in high school. As
discussion began, I realized that I was highly mistaken. It was an unusual position, one where there
was a professional gap between daughter and father. It was almost as if... Show more content on

After only a few days into school, we quickly dove into the purpose and use of critical thinking. I
quickly jotted down two of my favorite quotes that could relate to critical thinking, the latter is
hanging in my room. The first was by the very popular genius, Albert Einstein. He says, The
important thing is to never stop questioning. The second quote is by author Mark Twain, I have
never let my schooling interfere with my education. These two quotes summarize what we
learned during this lesson. Critical thinking is more than just thinking. It is questioning at the
most basic level. Since I was little girl, I have always questioned everything and tried to
understand. I felt like if I did not ask, then I would never know. This is part of the reason I am
ahead in my class in school today. Teachers would become frustrated when I would ask why? .
Many parents today try to suppress this in their child so they would not question authority. Yet,
sometimes children need to question authority. Parents should simply teach their children to
question politely and in the right circumstance. The popular phrase Curiosity killed the cat should
be changed to Curiosity educated the cat . I believe curiosity is just term people use to describe a

Theme Of The Moon In A Midsummer Night Dream
The sun is a constant in our lives. We wake up to it faithfully rising on the horizon. We enjoy its
unceasing warmth and energy throughout the day before falling asleep after it sets. With night
passing quickly, we take no notice of the moon that resides in place of the sun. However, it is this
unnoticed moonthat more accurately mirrors our perception of time and the phases in our lives.
William Shakespeare realized this about the moon. In his play, A Midsummer s Night Dream, he
uses the motif of the moon to symbolize both time and the phases in our lives just as he does
through the characters of the play.
Shakespeare conveys the passage of time through the character of Theseus early on in the play.
Theseus, referencing the moon, expresses his distaste for how slow time is passing by saying
in line 2: Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow this old moon wanes! she lingers my
desires, like to a step dame or a dowager long withering out a young man revenue (AMND 1.1.3
6.) Theseus is dissatisfied because he wants to be with his fiance, Hippolyta, now rather than
waiting for the moon to wane. However, Hippolyta reassuringly replies to Theseus in line 8, that
Four days will quickly steep themselves in night; Four nights will quickly dream away the time;
And then the moon, like to a silver bow new bent in heaven, shall behold the night of our
solemnities (1.1.7 11). Hippolyta, also referring to the moon, is telling Theseus that soon enough
the time will be here for them to be together. Another example of the moon representing time can
be seen when Theseus is speaking to Hermia about who she will marry and how she will obey
her father s commands. Take time to pause; and, by the nest new moon The sealing day betwixt
my love and me, (1.1.85 87). Here again, Shakespeare uses the motif of the moon to represent time
and effectively shows how his characters live their lives around it.
Shakespeare also uses the idea of moon phases to symbolize both the difficulties and the good
fortunes in one s life. For example, Shakespeare relates the darkness of the moon to the difficult
life of a nun and the difficult decision that Hermia must make. In Lines 70 78, Theseus declares to
Hermia, Whether, if

Mrs Smith is 97 years old; she has two children, a daughter and a son. She lost her husband over 20
years ago so her children have always played a big part helping her with her care weather that
was when she was at home or when she came to us at Eastbourne House. Her family is quite
small so they are very close and they still spend a lot of time together making sure they come to

Mrs Smith suffers from depression and takes various medications to help with this but she is an

One the day of the funeral I spent some time with Mrs Smith to make sure she was okay. I asked
her if she would like to write a letter to her daughter in law which we could put in an envelope
and set on fire, as if it was going up to heaven with her. She liked this idea but explained to me
she would struggle to write it herself and asked me if I could sit with her and help her to think of
the words to say and if I would write it out for her. I agreed to do this and I explained to Mrs
Smith that this was a very personal thing she had asked me to do and reassured her that what
was written in the letter would strictly stay between me and her and this comforted her. At 11am
that day myself, Mrs Smith, her neighbour and our activities co ordinator went out into the back

Gender Socialization In Toy Store Toys R Us
Gender, as a social construct has constantly intrigued me, particularly since our culture, society and
who we are is formed by it. The thought that we can make something that runs our lives so
tremendously is fascinating. Gender is imbued within each one of us from the beginning of our
lives and is enforced in all most everything, from toys to clothes.
The process of learning the social desires and expectations as well as attitudes associated with one s
sex is called as Gender Socialization. Starting from an early age, girls and boys are advised on
how to act and behave to societal standards of gender roles and behaviors. Gender socialization
occurs in numerous consumer items and even behavior. One method of doing this is through
children toys, and the gender socialization that occurs between girls and boys in the toys that are
showcased to them. There is a remarkable difference between the two kinds of gender biased toys,
and certainly it shapes how girls and boys are in this social world. ... Show more content on

A Clean Well Lighted Place
In A Clean, Well Lighted Place , Hemingway uses themes of depression and life as nothingness by
using symbols, and imagery. Two waiters in a Spanish cafГ© are waiting late one night for their
last customer to leave. As they wait, they talk about the old, deaf man sitting at the bar. It is
revealed that he has recently attempted suicide. The younger waiter in the cafГ© is very agitated
and wants the old man to go home. He says, I wish the suicide attempt had been successful. The
younger waiter says that he has a wife waiting for him at home, and is very unsympathetic. The
older waiter sympathizes and tells the young waiter that the old man had once had a wife as
well. The old man eventually leaves when the young waiter denied him any further drinks. The
old man explains that drinking in the cafГ© is completely different than drinking at home. He
describes the old man as, One of those who like to stay late at the cafГ©... with all those who do
not want to go to bed. With all those who need a light for the night. He is reluctant to close
because there could be a lot of people that may need the cafГ©. The older waiter points out that
the bright atmosphere of the cafГ© is different than that of a pub. After the younger waiter leaves,
the older one asks himself why he needs a clean, well lighted place. The answer is that he needs a
contrast of order because of a nothing that

Was Moses leader material
In this essay, I am going to be talking about three reasons that we can see in Exodus chapter 2.
Some of the things I see in this chapter on one side he was impulsive he was not that good at
making decisions but on the good side he was protective, he was well trained and he was strong.
Unfortunately, though he had many good traits Moses did have some problems one of them was his
impulsiveness. And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto
his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, one of his
brethren. And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew
the Egyptian and hid him in the sand right here we can see a situation where Moses was impulsive

And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh s daughter, and he became her son. And
she called his name Moses: and she said Because I drew him out of the water. And he looked this
way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in
the sand. he killed the Egyptian and hid him so he must have known how to kill fast wich he
probably was taught in the court
He watched his people and cared about them

Ethical Statement In Free Willy
Introduction
Willy was never really free. The killer whale star of the Hollywood movie Free Willy had to be
cared for by humans even after he was released and he never successfully integrated with his wild
kin. Researchers now say attempts to return him to the wild were misguided.
We believe the best option for [Willy] was the open pen he had in Norway, with care from his
trainers, says Malene Simon of the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, who participated in
efforts to reintegrate the cetacean in the wild and is lead author of the study. He could swim as
much as he wanted to, had plenty of frozen herring which he was very fond of and the people that
he was attached to kept him active.

The Meaning Of Love, By John Clare
This poem was written by John Clare, an English poet. This poem is about love and he used the
nature to describe love because many poems of John Clare was about rural life and scenery. This
poem will present the love that is secret love. There are three stanzas, twenty four lines and eight
lines in each stanza. In the first stanza, in the line 1 2, when the speaker was young, he fell in
love with a woman and he kept his love all along. He never told her. The word buzzing of fly was
like a sound of his heart that was always loud in his heart and he cloud not control it. It was like
he could not keep this secret love. In the line 3 5, he did not dare to gaze her face. He felt that it
had something in his mind that made him could not dare to see her face like he had sin that was
dark and could not touch the light. The word light refers to her face. In the line 6 8, when he went

It was hard to hide and forget this love. Even though he tried to leave his love in the field and the
town that he found her, he could not stop thinking about her. The breeze made him fall in the
daydream again and the bees still was singing the love song in his mind. The word bass (line 20)
refers to the word buzzing (line 2 in first stanza). In the first stanza the buzzing of fly was the
sound of his heart, but in the third stanza the sound of his heart was louder than first stanza
because the line 20 said that the fly s bass turned a lion s roar. It means that it was hard to hide
his love and could not keep his love anymore. It felt like his heart was going to burst. If he met
the silence or he felt alone, his mind still thought of her. The word tongue in line 21 refers to the
woman that he fell in love. The picture of her will appear and remind him every summer. Finally, it

The Effect Of Ph On The Rate Of Photosynthesis
Maggie Morris
Leaf Disks: The Rise from Bottom to Top
ABSTRACT
This experiment demonstrates the effects of pH on the rate of photosynthesis by examining the
behavior of leaf disks in different pH solutions under light. In this experiment, we used five
different pH levels: pH 5, pH 6, pH 7, pH 8 and pH 9. These solutions were created using a
combination of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. Spinancia olcerea or spinach, leaves were
used in the experiment to examine the effects of pH on the rate of photosynthesis. The rate of
photosynthesis was measured by counting the number of leaf disks that rose to the surface of the
solution after each minute. In acidic solutions, the rate of photosynthesis increased while in basic
solutions, the rate of photosynthesis decreased.
DESIGN (D)
DEFINING THE PROBLEM AND SELECTING VARIABLES The intention of this experiment is
to determine the effects of pH on the rate of photosynthesis in living leaves. Photosynthesis is a
process by which plants convert light energy captured from the sun into chemical energy which
they use to perform various plant functions. During the photosynthesis process, light, carbon dioxide
, and water react to produce products: sugar and oxygen. The equation for photosynthesis is:
Photosynthesis occurs in the palisade mesophyll of plant leaves. During photosynthesis, carbon
dioxide is broken up into 6 carbon for the sugar molecule and 12 oxygen. In this lab, I determined
the rate of photosynthesis in spinach

Tutorial #5, Tuesday 11:30am
Formerly imprisoned men and women experience hardships when re entering society after
spending time in incarceration. Released individuals face the issues of employment with a criminal
record, education and family relations when trying to adjust back into society (Cobbina 2010).
Researchers to this day focus on individual experiences in order to better understand the challenges
ex prisoners stumble upon when transitioning back into everyday life. This is important to study
today because there are a high number of people in North America that get released from prison
and are faced with difficulties transitioning into societal norms. In order to be able to assist
released prisoners with their re entry to society, it is important to do research on experiences of
previous released prisoners and their hardships. The purpose of this paper is to explore the
methodological ways in which researchers went about investigating the experiences pre released,
incarcerated, and post released prisoners. Researchers also examined service professionals that
assist prisoners in their reintegration process to better understand factors that account in the
transition. This review will expand on samples of people, interviews conducted, ethics, and the
grounded theory method approach. The research question is how is reintegration experienced
among released prisoners in North America?

Rituximab Case Study
Various mechanisms for the action of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have been identified:
п‚ћComplement directed cytotoxicity (CDC):
The mAbs bind to antigen on the cell surface and exposes their binding sites for proteins. These
proteins initiate the complement cascade and trigger the release of chemotactic factors and the
formation of the membrane attack complex, which promotes target cell lysis. Rituximab shows this
activity.
п‚ћADCC mediated adaptive immunity:
MAbs bind to antigen on the tumour cell surface, providing the target for Fc receptors on the
surface of natural killer (NK) cells. Cross linking of receptors with mAbs triggers release of
perforin and granzymes from NK cell that lyse the tumour cell. Cell debris is taken up by antigen

The drugs targeting on immune checkpoint have demonstrated higher response rates and prolonged
overall survival in cancer patients, as suggested by clinical cases.
PD 1 is a checkpoint protein on immune cells called T cells. It normally acts as a type of off
switch that helps keep the T cells from attacking other cells in the body. It does this when it
attaches to PD L1, a protein on some normal (and cancer) cells. When PD 1 binds to PD L1, it
basically tells the T cell to leave the other cell alone. Some cancer cells have large amounts of PD
L1, which helps them evade immune attack. CTLA 4 is another protein on some T cells that acts
as a type of off switch to keep the immune system in check. These two proteins are major target for
anti tumour mAbs under development.
Pembrolizumab: approved by EU and US in 2015 and 2014. Gives treat on melanoma. It targets
on programmed cell death 1 receptor (PD 1). PD 1 receptor protein down regulate the immune
system by preventing activation of T cells. Pembrolizumab blocks the inhibitory ligand of PD 1,
reduce the PD 1 function and therefore activates more T cells. Research suggested that cytotoxic T
cells are more susceptible to be inhibited by PD 1, hence TC become more activated when

Reality Tv
Reality TV

Reality TV has unseen effects and is detrimental to society. Reality TV is the current trend on TV
that has brought back the buzz to television, but it also has unforeseen effects on its viewers. Some
examples of Reality TV shows include: American Idol, The Bachelorette, Americas next top model,
fear factor, etc...These shows range from singing talents, overcome their fears, to looks and beauty.
Reality TV brings drama and voyeurism to its viewers by making its viewers too involved, taking
them away from more important matters, and by wasting valuable resources on pointless

Unfortunately most Reality TV shows will leave their garbage behind for someone else to pick

the participants. People who have been cast out of certain Show have to be rehabilitated after
being in the show. One woman, Paula Goodspeed, committed suicide, after being rejected from
American Idol. The judges Simon, Paula, and Jerry didn t agree that the girl s singing skill were
good enough for the show; therefore after criticizing her Paula went and ended her life near one of
the judge s homes.
Some people disagree with Reality TV being detrimental. In The Case for Reality TV Michael

watched American Idol, the previous week than the state of the union address on the broad cast
networks combined. Hirschorn states that Reality TV is the liveliest genre on the set right now
and has addressed a visceral need for a different kind of television at a time when the Web has

Essay On The Three Kingdoms
One of the most well know historical periods of Ancient China is the era of the Three Kingdoms,
which records the period to some of the most well known historical figures, heroes, and their
complex yet intriguing relationships. The Three Kingdoms was a period of unrest, and battles
which initiated in 220AD, when Wei replaced the Eastern Han Dynasty, and lasted until the
reunification of lands in 280AD. Towards the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the emperor was
losing power and influence, which led to the inability for Eastern Han to unite the whole land. At
the same time, the country was in anarchy as groups of warriors were uprising and rebelling
against Eastern Han, proclaiming themselves emperor. However, these powers were too weak to

The complex relations during the Three Kingdoms supressed the dominating country Wei from
easily attacking and taking over the weaker ones, Shu and Wu. This involves the two smaller,
weaker countries joining forces to withstand the greater, and more powerful one. The outstanding
generals , leaders , and strategists battles also aided each country to form strong ties and uphold
their respective lands, while taking over other unclaimed/not well maintained lands. This bond
between the Three Kingdoms has continued for a long time before the fall of each kingdoms,
with Jin replacing Wei, and merged all three into one large Kingdom. There are many factors that
contributed to the disintegration of land following the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Amongst
which, the main reason was due to the chaos and uprising as feudal lords fought each other for
territories. The court ministers of late Eastern Han were corrupt, in particular Dong Zuo was
considered one of the most corrupted, and manipulative officials of the time, and was detested by
citizens nationwide. This served as an excuse and motive for many lords to repel against the

Walt Disney s Impact On American Society

To start with, Disney turned his TV series into a theme park. Disney s TV series was so popular
that it ran for 29 seasons and because it was so popular Disneyland opened. Disneyland was a
huge success. Disneyland the series became a theme park because it was so popular and millions
of people loved the characters. People wanted to go see the characters and interact with them. So
Disney created a place where it was possible for people to do that (Beattie). This suggests that
viewers wanted to spend time with the characters they watched at home. Disney had a great idea to
turn his shows into an amusement park, which attracted a lot of people. At the same time, Disney
used his T.V. show to advertise his amusement park. By 1954, Disney had recognized the growing
popularity of television and produced a series called Disneyland, which he initially used to promote
his new Disneyland theme park in California (Lackmann). This maintains that Disney was a smart
and bright person who knew how to be successful. Additionally, Disney wanted to create a homelike
atmosphere at his park. Disneyland put a new spin on amusement parks when its gates opened in
Anaheim, California, on July 17, 1955. Before deciding whether to enter Disney s Adventureland,

The Impact of Ben Loman s Character on Theme and Character Development in Arthur Miller s

play was brief, he showed that if you are honest to yourself, you get to live the life that you want.
His honesty to himself is the counterpart to Willy not following the right dreams. Ben was what
Willy needed to be like. The theme of the play was lived and shown by Ben.
The effect that Ben had on the development of other characters is shown the most by Willy. Willy
was the brother of Ben and wanted to be successful like his brother. Through all the trips Ben made,
he was quite a successful man. Ben was rich and happy, which is what Willy wanted to. When
Willy s mind was going crazy, Ben would appear to him at times. Willy always seemed to be
happy when he talked to Ben, even though he was really talking to himself. Ben would offer
advice to Willy when Willy thought about him. After the restaurant incident, Willy was once again
visited by Ben. Ben was telling Willy how his family would be financially stable from the insurance
money if Willy died. This conversation that Willy had with Ben seemed to convince Willy that he
should kill himself in an automobile accident. Throughout the play, Ben had an effect on the
development of Willy.

Why Is Louis Xiv Important In The 1600s
From 1500 1700, there were multiple European monarchs that were beneficial to their country, but
there were also many other monarchs that were detrimental to their country. During this time
period, certain European countries also had their own governmental issues, whereas other countries
were thriving. Throughout the 1600 s, numerous European leaders were fighting internal and
external wars, having social and economic problems, and losing faith in their people. On the other
hand, some leaders were also providing support for their people and creating a strong government.
There are several European monarchs who were beneficial and detrimental, but five key people
control the discussion. King James I of England, Peter I of Russia, Louis XIV of France, Pierre

Sir Robert Peel Review
American policing has been around for years and is extremely likely to be around for hundreds of
generations to come. Very early policing and punishments could include public humiliation and
even torture. Times have changed since the beginnings of police tactics now it is incredibly
uncommon to see public humiliation due to a crime. American policing has changed multiple times
over the past hundred plus years. In most eyes the changes have been for the best of the policing
system, trying to establish a concrete system. The policing system has developed overtime into a

The police officers that went into the public had to meet certain qualifications. The officer had to
act in a professional manner while in the public. Theses officers were even tempered and did not
lash out quickly with violence physically or verbally. These officers were trained to be a well
mannered, in control of oneself, and respectful officer. After gaining respect of the citizens Sir
Robert Peels next major task was preventing crime and establishing authority.
Preventing crime was the primary purpose for Sir Robert Peel and his associates. In order to
prevent crime the London Metropolitan Police Act needed to be approved by parliament. In 1829
the act was passed and Sir Robert Peel took advantage of this. This created a full time uniformed
police agency that would patrol the city with the effort of preventing crime from happening. With
the public now respecting officers and officers patrolling the streets that every citizen walked on
the police officers eventually gained a form of authority in the public. This authority came with the
training for the job and the citizens recognizing that the officer is there to help and prevent crime.
United States development of a formal policing agency came from
Sir Robert Peel and what the London Metropolitan Police have become. The law enforcement in

Moral Messages in An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley
Priestley wrote an Inspector Calls in 1945 just before the end of WW2. However, The play itself is
set in 1912 just before the start of WW1, and in Edwardian England. Priestley was a socialist
writer who had left wing political views with very strong beliefs; he enjoyed using types of theatre
to get his messages across.
When the platy was set, there was a lot of historical events going on at the time; Titanic, Captain
Scott falling to reach S Pole, Suffragette movement campaigning for women s rights, worker

In Mr. Birling s big speech before the Inspector arrives, there are many moral issues raised: First of
all, the issue of whether the marriage is for love, money, respect or business Your engagement to
Sheila means a tremendous lot to me…your father and I have been friendly rivals in business
for some time now…and now you ve brought us together. While Mr B does mention that
they will make each other very happy he mentions his business a lot, and this shows how he
wants the wedding for two reasons, as he wants to climb the social ladder to the top. This is
mentioned a number of times at different sections of the play. Mr B refers to business later on in
his speech, with the prosperity of the country brought up in the speech suggesting the marriage is
for money, and when it turns out Gerald has been keeping a mistress, he still wants the marriage to
go ahead making excuses for Gerald; this shows that all Mr. Birling wanted from the marriage was
money, respect and prosperity for himself.

Unknown Organic Compounds
Organic Compounds contain Carbon, a versatile bonding element due to its ability to form four
stable bonds. They can be separated from mixtures and identified through Thin Layer
Chromatography (TLC). TLC is a simple, and rapid analytical technique that provides qualitative
information about a sample. It is based on the principle that different compounds will have different
attractions to the stationary and mobile phases. Typically, already characterized compounds can be
identified chemically. This allows scientists to determine if compounds have desirable structures,
and if reaction conditions of unwanted products can be altered. However, with complex compounds
that were never characterized, this process is insufficient. Instead, IR Spectroscopy is used. It
measures the vibrations of bonds, producing a spectrum of the different energies absorbed by the
molecule. By comparing the energies with standard correlation values, the identity of an unknown
compound can be determined. In this experiment, the identity of an unknown organic compound
will be determined using these methods. Procedure:... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The solution was placed into a separation funnel, in which the top and bottom layers were slowly
filtered out into two different beakers. The bottom layer solution was heated until the ethyl acetate
evaporated and only the organic compound remained. Next, a TLC technique was prepared

order to develop a standard, a TLC plate was spotted with benzoic acid (BA), benzophenone (BZ),
biphenyl (BI), and a mixture off the three. After incubating the plate in the chamber with the mobile
phase, it was analyzed under a UV light. Then, the Rf values for the known compounds were

Benefits Of The Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was a land deal made between France and the U.S. in December of
1803, where France sold America 828,000 miles of land along the west side of the Mississippi
River for 15 million dollars (approximately 4 cents per acre). People regard it as Thomas Jefferson
s greatest achievement because of how drastically it changed the United States. The purchase greatly
expanded America and brought many other benefits along with it. Although it was definitely a
major benefit to the United States, even Jefferson had his doubts about the purchase. But despite
their many doubts, the U.S. made the decision to ratify the purchase, and because of that decision,
America has changed for the better. Although there were a few doubts at the time, the Louisiana
Purchasewas extremely beneficial to the United States. It was One of the most colossal land
transactions in history (1), containing modern day Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma,
and Nebraska; as well as parts of Minnesota, Louisiana, New Mexico, Texas, South Dakota,
Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, and two Canadian provinces: Alberta and Saskatchewan. It
doubled the amount of land the U.S. owned. Bigger land area also meant for more farming lands
and more places for various business enterprises (2). With the expansion of the United States
farther west, came the total availability of New Orleans and the Mississippi River. This provided

But then goes on to explain how any disaster could be avoided by zoning , which is the method of
allowing people to experience only a slice of what a reef has to offer rather than letting the

An apparent solution to the fight between the economic battle and the ecological threats is building
artificial reefs right next to natural reefs to divert divers away from the natural ones. Artificial reefs
made up of large vehicles underwater is sure to draw attention and damage away from the natural
reef. This has extreme benefits to ocean conservation and ecotourism.
The methods used in Eilat, Israel were to provide a more diverse diving experience and redirect
divers away from the fragile natural corals. Over the years that artificial reefs have been established
along the coast of Eilat, some for divers entertainment and some for research, It attracts more
European tourists and they by extension learn about how their activity could be detrimental to the

Sadly, the partners feel differently, as this pet is a member of their family, one that cannot be

bargaining chip during the process. Thankfully, the state of New Jersey recognizes that pets have
special subjective value during this process, thus the courts work to find a pet custody agreement
using a manner similar to that used for child custody issues.
A 2009 Appellate Decision led to this change in New Jersey Law. Factors considered when
determining pet custody include who primarily cared for the animal, taking it to the vet, feeding it
and walking it, among other things. In cases where matters of child and pet custody are involved,
the court tends to set an custody schedule that coordinates with the custody schedule of the child or

Organized Crime Definition
It is very difficult to give one unified definition for the term Organized Crime . Similarly it is very
difficult to give one concise definition for the term Organized Crime Groups . The conventional
definitions of the organized crime does not provide us with any single definition for such groups
but provides us with certain characteristics that are most commonly found in the criminal groups
also used synonymously with the criminal enterprises. The FBI defines a criminal group or a

Most of these groups have their terms with the influential individuals in the government or
society in order to obtain immunity from the investigation or any kind of arrest. The
organizations can have a centralized leadership or a decentralized one in the form of a
committee. The rules that these groups follow are very adaptive and flexible. For example, the
productivity of the illegal drugs can be increased with the increase in the demand of the illegal
goods. Similarly the number of employs might also be increased or decreased accordingly.
Another very important characteristic of such organizations is that they often invest their money
in the legal kinds of businesses as well. These businesses provide them with an alibi as well as a
cover up for all the kinds of illegal crimes that they commit. The most common kinds of criminal
activities that these organized groups are involved in are bribery, mail fraud, drug

The Importance Of A Competency For Execution Evaluation
Introduction
An ethical decision is a decision in which a person is conflicted between two moral ideals. The
answer is not clear in these types of situations. The deliverance of punishment in America has
always been an ethical decision, especially when the punishment is death. After a horrific crime is
committed, many complicated proceedings take place, and sometimes these proceedings sometimes
lead to the decision to execute the person responsible. The next steps are complex and often times
create moral conflicts for those who are participating in them. One step that must take place when
an accused has been sentenced to death is a competency exam which is administered by a mental
health professional. This paper will focus on mental health professional s participation to certify
someone as death ready prior to execution and the ethical decisions that mental health professionals
face during this time, yet the ultimate need for their expertise.
Background Information
A competency for execution evaluation is required by law to be performed before the execution of
a person sentenced to death. This exam aims to make sure the accused is death ready, or in other
words are they competent to be executed. To be considered competent to be executed, one must: (a)
understand and appreciate the punishment, (b) understand and appreciate death, and (c) have the
ability to work with the judicial team (Neal, 2010, p. 148). The mental health care professional also

Both substantive law and procedural law application play a part in establishing whether a scientific
testimony will be allowed in a federal court. The substantive law establishes whether the scientific
theory in question is connected with a case in an important and acceptable way. On the other hand,
the procedural law determines whether a scientific testimony has enough basis for it to be deemed
useful in establishing factual and legal issues in a court case. Federal courts apply the substantive

According to Hodgson and Dearborn, they pointed out that though human evidence of an association

A Study On Big Five Factor Model
A study was conducted to test using the Big Five Factor Model (Costa McCrae, 1995) to measure
whether different personalities can or cannot be observed with a group of 1006 Inuit children from
Northern Canada who spoke the Inuktitut language between the ages of 9 to 12 year old who were
recruited for the study. The International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) measure scale was used and
the five item measure scales selected were: (Extraversion, Neuroticism, Openness, Agreeableness
Conscientiousness) , (Goldberg, 1999). The study produced results that Conscientiousness scored
the highest amongst the Inuitchildren more than expected. This could have been due to the
nurturing and parenting styles of the Inuit community. There is a need for further studies to be
conducted with the parents, caregivers, and educators of the Inuit children to confirm whether their
personality findings was correct. Extended research may have findings of significant differences
depending on the researchers, questionnaires and the interpretation of the data.

What Role Does The Satan Play In The Canterbury Tales
In Medieval Literature Satan was often used as a character. There was also more evidence during

Absurdity In The Stranger By Albert Camus
In the book The Stranger, by Albert Camus, the use of absurdity is at a great extent. Throughout
the book, Camus gives plenty of absurd scenarios that are carried out by the characters. This
essay will point out many of the parts from the book which are great examples of this topic. In
the beginning of the book, the main character and narrator, Meursault, is notified that his mother
has passed away. She lived in an old people s home because she was sick and Meursault could not
afford to take care of her. The absurdpart about this event, is the fact that Meursault did not even
shed a tear at his own mother s funeral. Another ridiculous part is that he did not even know her
age! He was asked by one of the undertakers, Was she old? And Meursault replied, Fairly, then
after stating, because I didn t know the exact number, (p.16). It is completely absurd to not know
your own mother s age. Meursault also didn t want to look at his mother in the casket. Instead, he
drank coffee and smoked during the funeral. That is purely absurd to do at one s own mother s
funeral. Another example of absurdity in the book, The Stranger, would be Meursault s feelings
towards his girlfriend, Marie. They have a very intimate relationship and Marie even tells
Meursault that she loves him. However, when Marie asked if he loved her back, he replied that he
did not. As strong and intimate their relationship is, it is almost absurd for Meursault to say that he
doesn t love her. He even fantasizes

Essay on Robert Nozick s Experience Machine
Good experiences are something that we spend our life constantly striving to obtain. Once we
gain these good experiences, we look for the next opportunity in order to gain that same great
feeling that we had in our last experience. What if someone told you that there was a way to have
these good experiences all the time? You could quite literally plug yourself into a machine that
would give you the great experiences that you have been searching for your whole life. The best
part is that, once you have decided to plug yourself into this machine, you would feel and think
that these false experiences you are having are real. Robert Nozick proposes this very scenario in
his book Anarchy State, and Utopia. This scenario is known as the... Show more content on

Unger mentions the tendency for us to buy life insurance as a claim that good experiences are not
the only thing that matter to us. We do not get good experiences for paying our life insurance. In
fact, we will never experience anything that happens to this money. We do this so that our
dependents will benefit from this money. With all this said, we are still very rational in buying
this life insurance. (Unger 1990, 166) Therefore, we should value our capacity to make free
decisions in the real world over just having good experiences. The life insurance example, that
Unger mentions, is a perfect example as to why there are things that matter to us besides pleasure.
Nozick sums this up by saying, Perhaps what we desire is to live as ourselves, in contact with
reality. (NozickВІ 2010, 1) One can interpret Nozick s statement by his insinuation that gaining
pure pleasurable experiences are not as valuable as knowing that we are living in contact with
reality. We should cherish and desire our lives in our realistic world; false pleasure experiences
have no real value. In our lives, we want to BE certain people to plug in to an experience machine
is to commit a form of suicide. (NozickВІ 2010, 1) Plugging into an experience in order for you to
merely experience false happenings would be lying to

Sunset Boulevard Essay
A fragment of life in Hollywood is being spread over the screen of the Music Hall in Sunset
Boulevard. Utilizing as the premise of their forthcoming, burning dramatization a shameful
circumstance including a blurred, maturing quiet screen star and a destitute, pessimistic youthful
scriptwriter, Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder(with an aid from D. M. Marshman, Jr.) have
composed an effective story of the aspirations and disappointments that join to make life in the
cardboard city so entrancing to the outside world.
Sunset Boulevard is in no way, shape or form an adjusted story of Hollywood, past or present. Be
that as it may it is such a cunning compound of truth and legend and is so lavishly fragrant of the
past, yet so contemporaneous that it apparently talks with extraordinary power. Sunset Boulevard is
that uncommon mix of impactful composition, master acting, excellent course, and
inconspicuously aesthetic photography which rapidly does magic over a crowd of people and
holds it excited to a shattering peak.
Gloria Swanson was persuaded out of long retirement to depict the woeful, overlooked film
monarch, Norma Desmond, and now it can be said that it is endless that any other individual may
have been considered for the part. As the rich, boastful relic urgently longing to hear again the
approvals of the swarm, Miss Swanson commands the picture. Indeed in those few scenes when she
is not on screen her vicinity is felt like the overwhelming fragrance of tuberoses

It is characterized by varying degrees of insulin resistance and insulin deficiency. It is thought that
the earliest defect in the pathogenesis, is impaired insulin action or insulin resistance. Resistance to
the action of insulin will result in impaired insulin mediated glucose uptake in the periphery (by
muscle and fat), incomplete suppression of hepatic glucose output and impaired triglyceride uptake
by fat. To overcome insulin resistance, beta islet cell will increase the amount of insulin secreted.
Higher circulating insulin levels will overcome the obstruction to the action of insulin. This state of
hyperglycemia persist for many years. Abnormal fuel metabolism (hyperglycemia and
dyslipidemia) occurs when there is a mismatch between insulin requirement, as dictated by insulin
resistance, and insulin supply as dictated by beta cells function. For diabetes mellitus to develop,

Quiet Girl Monologue
For a while, my life was full of fear. I was afraid of not being accepted for who I was. As a result
of that, I learned to make myself invisible to unwanted attention. I suppose you could say I would

just the quiet girl, and I hated it. I wanted to be more than that and to do that I needed to be
anyone but me. To make that change I decided I would start by starting a conversation with a
stranger. After a few days of putting my plan on my opportunity finally came. I was at the
library looking for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. While I was searching for the
book, I noticed a girl about my age standing a few feet away. With an immediate boost of
confidence, I walk towards the brunette. Unfortunately, that courage seemed to disappear as
quickly as it came and I ended up mumbling something that sounded gibberish and walked away
as fast as I could. I remember feeling my face heat up and glancing down at my trembling hands.
At that point, I did not know what made me more upset the fact that I could not bring myself to
talk to someone or the fact that I forgot my book. Days passed since that dreadful incident, and my
hopes of being known for something other than a quiet girl disappeared that is... Show more content

The Fundamental Principles Of The Us Constitution
One of the fundamental principles of the US Constitution is the freedom of speech. Something
so ingrained in the country, that it is often an afterthought for many Americans. John Stuart Mill
believes that freedom of expression and speech is a necessity for the human race to advance and
evolve. Mill s justification of this absolute freedom come from the understanding that mistakes
and choices made by the person leads to progress and the development of your individual self.
He also argues that speech must be absolute because the only way harm can truly come about, is
through action. Mill s harm principle states that, the only reason for power to be legitimately
exercised over a people is to prevent harm to others. It also sought to limit the actions of a
possible tyrannical majority that begins to impose its interests on the public. Mill claims that
the only limit that should be placed on expression is if it leads to the harms of others, it is not to
be infringed upon if it only harms the individual. James Madison agreed with many of the
concepts of Mill s free speech, but thought a limit on speech was a sign of a breach of power,
which was reflected in the drafting of the First Amendment. Recent Supreme Court cases have
ruled in favor of limiting certain forms of speech that speaks to a clear and present danger, when
words aren t simply content, but a vehicle for action. Mill argues that the freedom of dissenting
speech is just as, if not more important than the popular

Advertising Old Spice Opens With Isaiah Mustafa
The commercial Questions advertising Old Spice opens with Isaiah Mustafa also known as the man
your man can smell like in nothing but a towel. He starts by addressing the women of the world
with a suggestive hello ladies and continuing to further question women on what they want in a
man. It then uses the power of rhetorical strategies such as ethos and pathos, with humor and gender
stereotypes to connect with the target audienceand convince them Old Spice is the product for
them. The narrator initially addresses women appealing to their desire to make their manmore
attractive, while targeting men who want to be more attractive to women. Old Spice commercials
offer little logic or statistics to back their product, however their use of sex appeal and humor play
into peoples emotions perhaps making them feel insecure which has proven to be highly effective
in selling this brand.
As the commercial asks, so ladies should your man smell like an Old Spice man? Well who
wouldn t want an adventurous guy that seems to be the perfect man? The use of ethos to
establish a strong character in this commercial is overwhelming; Isaiah himself is a former NFL
player (Mustafa). Mustafa has defining attributes like chiseled abs and broad shoulders; he has a
deep voice and a bearded face helping him to truly embody the image of a real masculine man. He
is both physically fit and attractive embodying the image every man strives to be by establishing
himself as a perfect man he has made

  • 2. The Demilitarization Of Japan The postwar program for Japan was complicated in some ways but then again it was all there to rebuild the Japanese economy and make things more peaceful. One thing that was created was called demilitarization. This was a program that was important to the post war program for may reasons. Demilitarization is the process of disbanding a nations armed forces. In this case it was Japanese. MacArthur who created this was very quick to achieve this goal and he left Japan with only small police forces. Everyone knew that Japan was a very aggressive fighting nation. Their military had fueled so much hatred in WWII which led to them being defeated brutally many times. For example when the US had sent atomic bombs they knew Japan was full of ... • 3. Loss Of Innocence In Laurie Halse Anderson s The Joy Luck... In all our lives, there is a fall from innocence. A time after which, we are never the same. Stand By Me. Innocence can be found at any age or any point in one s life. It means chastity, freedom from wrong, lack of knowledge, SIMPLICITY. When one has innocence the world seems easy without any worries, however that can all change when one loses their innocence. The loss of innocence can feel as though one has fallen into a black hole and can never escape, darkness, voicelessness, LONELINESS. In Amy Tan s The Joy Luck Club, Nadine Gordimer s Once Upon a Time , and Laurie Halse Anderson s Speak, the authors use main and supporting characters to show a loss of innocence at a young age. In The Joy Luck Club loss of innocence is expressed through the old woman from the fourth parable, Queen Mother of the Western Skies . In Once Upon a Time loss of innocence is expressed through the young boy. In Speakloss of innocence is expressed though Melinda. Although all three of these characters go through the same struggle of loss of innocence, Anderson s character Melinda is able to come to terms with her loss and regain her strength. In these three stories, Tan, Gordimer, and Anderson use the theme of loss of innocence to portray loneliness, fear, and barriers to show how one can learn from past experiences. In the fourth parable Queen Mother of the Western Skies , Tan uses the old woman to show her loss of innocence through flashbacks to her youth. As she plays with her granddaughter, the old woman wonders what she will teach the child. She sees the baby laughing and the old woman recalls that she too was once free and innocent , laughing for pure enjoyment (213). However, as time went on she threw away her foolish innocence to protect herself (213). As a result, when she had a daughter, she taught her daughter to do the same and shed her innocence (213). The old woman wonders if telling her daughter to do so was wrong, for now she can recognize the evil in the world. She calls the baby as if she is a high and mighty spirit named Syi Wang Mu , Queen Mother of the Western Skies and asks her to answer her question. Continuing to call her granddaughter the Queen, ... Chapter summaries for Better by Atule Gawande Biology Enriched Extra Credit Better: A Surgeon s Notes on Performance Chapter 1: On Washing Hands Mr. Gawande starts his literature on washing hands. He introduces two friends a microbiologist and an infectious disease specialist. Both work hard and diligently against the spread of diseases just like Semmelweis who is mentioned in the chapter. Something I learned, that not many realize, is that each year two million people acquire an infection while they are in the hospital. Mainly because the clinicians only wash their hands one third to one half as many times as they should. Semmelweis, mentioned earlier, concluded in 1847 that doctors themselves were to blame for childbed fever, which was the leading cause of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By analyzing the patterns of injuries and treatment, other basic life saving measures were implemented. For example, soldiers coming into treatment were found to be without their Kevlar. When asked why? They would complain about the weight, the heat, and the discomfort. Orders were issued that Kevlar was to be taken seriously and the injuries became less frequent. Gawande s point is that reporting is vital to diligence just as it was for the WHO supervisor fighting malaria; these doctors recorded the details and results of each case. They understand, as Gawande writes, that vigilance over the details of their own performance offered the only chance to do better. Chapter 4: Naked The chapter is titled Naked and concerns the exam room etiquette that doctors and patients expect from one another and often uncomfortably tiptoe around. There is an allusion to a movie that has the female patient separated by a dark blanket like screen from the doctor. The doctor s son who is about six years old is the communicator. Even though they are clearly audible to each other they wait until the boy speaks to them. This is the matter of decency. According to this literature some doctors feel uncomfortable with the whole process. There is really no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Apologetics Reflection Essay Although I have always thought of myself as an outspoken and strongly rooted person, this semester changed the way I thought about Christianity, the Bible, and truth. While this course is called Apologetics, it delves into much deeper issues than just that. I learned in this short semester that I might not know myself and God as well as I thoughtI did. On the first day of school, I walked into the classroom after the second bell, already deeply apprehensive. My own father would be teaching my bible class, something very few students get to experience in high school. As discussion began, I realized that I was highly mistaken. It was an unusual position, one where there was a professional gap between daughter and father. It was almost as if... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After only a few days into school, we quickly dove into the purpose and use of critical thinking. I quickly jotted down two of my favorite quotes that could relate to critical thinking, the latter is hanging in my room. The first was by the very popular genius, Albert Einstein. He says, The important thing is to never stop questioning. The second quote is by author Mark Twain, I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. These two quotes summarize what we learned during this lesson. Critical thinking is more than just thinking. It is questioning at the most basic level. Since I was little girl, I have always questioned everything and tried to understand. I felt like if I did not ask, then I would never know. This is part of the reason I am ahead in my class in school today. Teachers would become frustrated when I would ask why? . Many parents today try to suppress this in their child so they would not question authority. Yet, sometimes children need to question authority. Parents should simply teach their children to question politely and in the right circumstance. The popular phrase Curiosity killed the cat should be changed to Curiosity educated the cat . I believe curiosity is just term people use to describe a good critical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Theme Of The Moon In A Midsummer Night Dream The sun is a constant in our lives. We wake up to it faithfully rising on the horizon. We enjoy its unceasing warmth and energy throughout the day before falling asleep after it sets. With night passing quickly, we take no notice of the moon that resides in place of the sun. However, it is this unnoticed moonthat more accurately mirrors our perception of time and the phases in our lives. William Shakespeare realized this about the moon. In his play, A Midsummer s Night Dream, he uses the motif of the moon to symbolize both time and the phases in our lives just as he does through the characters of the play. Shakespeare conveys the passage of time through the character of Theseus early on in the play. Theseus, referencing the moon, expresses his distaste for how slow time is passing by saying in line 2: Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow this old moon wanes! she lingers my desires, like to a step dame or a dowager long withering out a young man revenue (AMND 1.1.3 6.) Theseus is dissatisfied because he wants to be with his fiance, Hippolyta, now rather than waiting for the moon to wane. However, Hippolyta reassuringly replies to Theseus in line 8, that Four days will quickly steep themselves in night; Four nights will quickly dream away the time; And then the moon, like to a silver bow new bent in heaven, shall behold the night of our solemnities (1.1.7 11). Hippolyta, also referring to the moon, is telling Theseus that soon enough the time will be here for them to be together. Another example of the moon representing time can be seen when Theseus is speaking to Hermia about who she will marry and how she will obey her father s commands. Take time to pause; and, by the nest new moon The sealing day betwixt my love and me, (1.1.85 87). Here again, Shakespeare uses the motif of the moon to represent time and effectively shows how his characters live their lives around it. Shakespeare also uses the idea of moon phases to symbolize both the difficulties and the good fortunes in one s life. For example, Shakespeare relates the darkness of the moon to the difficult life of a nun and the difficult decision that Hermia must make. In Lines 70 78, Theseus declares to Hermia, Whether, if ... The thought that we can make something that runs our lives so tremendously is fascinating. Gender is imbued within each one of us from the beginning of our lives and is enforced in all most everything, from toys to clothes. The process of learning the social desires and expectations as well as attitudes associated with one s sex is called as Gender Socialization. Starting from an early age, girls and boys are advised on how to act and behave to societal standards of gender roles and behaviors. Gender socialization occurs in numerous consumer items and even behavior. One method of doing this is through children toys, and the gender socialization that occurs between girls and boys in the toys that are showcased to them. Two waiters in a Spanish cafГ© are waiting late one night for their last customer to leave. As they wait, they talk about the old, deaf man sitting at the bar. It is revealed that he has recently attempted suicide. The younger waiter in the cafГ© is very agitated and wants the old man to go home. He says, I wish the suicide attempt had been successful. The younger waiter says that he has a wife waiting for him at home, and is very unsympathetic. The older waiter sympathizes and tells the young waiter that the old man had once had a wife as well. The old man eventually leaves when the young waiter denied him any further drinks. The old man explains that drinking in the cafГ© is completely different than drinking at home. Unfortunately, though he had many good traits Moses did have some problems one of them was his impulsiveness. And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, one of his brethren. There are three stanzas, twenty four lines and eight lines in each stanza. In the first stanza, in the line 1 2, when the speaker was young, he fell in love with a woman and he kept his love all along. He never told her. The word buzzing of fly was like a sound of his heart that was always loud in his heart and he cloud not control it. It was like he could not keep this secret love. • 13. The Effect Of Ph On The Rate Of Photosynthesis Maggie Morris Leaf Disks: The Rise from Bottom to Top ABSTRACT This experiment demonstrates the effects of pH on the rate of photosynthesis by examining the behavior of leaf disks in different pH solutions under light. In this experiment, we used five different pH levels: pH 5, pH 6, pH 7, pH 8 and pH 9. These solutions were created using a combination of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. Spinancia olcerea or spinach, leaves were used in the experiment to examine the effects of pH on the rate of photosynthesis. The rate of photosynthesis was measured by counting the number of leaf disks that rose to the surface of the solution after each minute. In acidic solutions, the rate of photosynthesis increased while in basic solutions, the rate of photosynthesis decreased. DESIGN (D) DEFINING THE PROBLEM AND SELECTING VARIABLES The intention of this experiment is to determine the effects of pH on the rate of photosynthesis in living leaves. Photosynthesis is a process by which plants convert light energy captured from the sun into chemical energy which they use to perform various plant functions. During the photosynthesis process, light, carbon dioxide , and water react to produce products: sugar and oxygen. The equation for photosynthesis is: Photosynthesis occurs in the palisade mesophyll of plant leaves. During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide is broken up into 6 carbon for the sugar molecule and 12 oxygen. In this lab, I determined the rate of photosynthesis in spinach ... Ravit Grimberg 212847570 Andrea Kalmin Tutorial #5, Tuesday 11:30am Formerly imprisoned men and women experience hardships when re entering society after spending time in incarceration. Released individuals face the issues of employment with a criminal record, education and family relations when trying to adjust back into society (Cobbina 2010). Researchers to this day focus on individual experiences in order to better understand the challenges ex prisoners stumble upon when transitioning back into everyday life. This is important to study today because there are a high number of people in North America that get released from prison and are faced with difficulties transitioning into societal norms. In order to be able to assist released prisoners with their re entry to society, it is important to do research on experiences of previous released prisoners and their hardships. The purpose of this paper is to explore the methodological ways in which researchers went about investigating the experiences pre released, incarcerated, and post released prisoners. Researchers also examined service professionals that assist prisoners in their reintegration process to better understand factors that account in the transition. This review will expand on samples of people, interviews conducted, ethics, and the grounded theory method approach. The research question is how is reintegration experienced among released prisoners in North America? Sample Researchers gathered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The drugs targeting on immune checkpoint have demonstrated higher response rates and prolonged overall survival in cancer patients, as suggested by clinical cases. PD 1 is a checkpoint protein on immune cells called T cells. It normally acts as a type of off switch that helps keep the T cells from attacking other cells in the body. It does this when it attaches to PD L1, a protein on some normal (and cancer) cells. When PD 1 binds to PD L1, it basically tells the T cell to leave the other cell alone. Some cancer cells have large amounts of PD L1, which helps them evade immune attack. CTLA 4 is another protein on some T cells that acts as a type of off switch to keep the immune system in check. They can be separated from mixtures and identified through Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). TLC is a simple, and rapid analytical technique that provides qualitative information about a sample. It is based on the principle that different compounds will have different attractions to the stationary and mobile phases. Typically, already characterized compounds can be identified chemically. This allows scientists to determine if compounds have desirable structures, and if reaction conditions of unwanted products can be altered. However, with complex compounds that were never characterized, this process is insufficient. Instead, IR Spectroscopy is used. It measures the vibrations of bonds, producing a spectrum of the different energies absorbed by the molecule. By comparing the energies with standard correlation values, the identity of an unknown compound can be determined. In the book Chaucer says, There was a Summoner with us in the place who had a fire red cherubinnish face (Chaucer line 642). Not only that but he drinks and when he does , he doesn t care what is going on around him, According to the text it says, And drinking strong wine till all was hazy , then he would shout and jabber as if he s crazy (Chaucer line 653). • 39. Absurdity In The Stranger By Albert Camus In the book The Stranger, by Albert Camus, the use of absurdity is at a great extent. Throughout the book, Camus gives plenty of absurd scenarios that are carried out by the characters. This essay will point out many of the parts from the book which are great examples of this topic. In the beginning of the book, the main character and narrator, Meursault, is notified that his mother has passed away. She lived in an old people s home because she was sick and Meursault could not afford to take care of her. The absurdpart about this event, is the fact that Meursault did not even shed a tear at his own mother s funeral. Another ridiculous part is that he did not even know her age! He was asked by one of the undertakers, Was she old? And Meursault replied, Fairly, then after stating, because I didn t know the exact number, (p.16). It is completely absurd to not know your own mother s age. Meursault also didn t want to look at his mother in the casket. Instead, he drank coffee and smoked during the funeral. That is purely absurd to do at one s own mother s funeral. Another example of absurdity in the book, The Stranger, would be Meursault s feelings towards his girlfriend, Marie. They have a very intimate relationship and Marie even tells Meursault that she loves him. However, when Marie asked if he loved her back, he replied that he did not. As strong and intimate their relationship is, it is almost absurd for Meursault to say that he doesn t love her. He even fantasizes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Essay on Robert Nozick s Experience Machine Good experiences are something that we spend our life constantly striving to obtain. Once we gain these good experiences, we look for the next opportunity in order to gain that same great feeling that we had in our last experience. What if someone told you that there was a way to have these good experiences all the time? You could quite literally plug yourself into a machine that would give you the great experiences that you have been searching for your whole life. The best part is that, once you have decided to plug yourself into this machine, you would feel and think that these false experiences you are having are real. Robert Nozick proposes this very scenario in his book Anarchy State, and Utopia. This scenario is known as the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unger mentions the tendency for us to buy life insurance as a claim that good experiences are not the only thing that matter to us. We do not get good experiences for paying our life insurance. In fact, we will never experience anything that happens to this money. We do this so that our dependents will benefit from this money. With all this said, we are still very rational in buying this life insurance. (Unger 1990, 166) Therefore, we should value our capacity to make free decisions in the real world over just having good experiences. The life insurance example, that Unger mentions, is a perfect example as to why there are things that matter to us besides pleasure. Nozick sums this up by saying, Perhaps what we desire is to live as ourselves, in contact with reality. (NozickВІ 2010, 1) One can interpret Nozick s statement by his insinuation that gaining pure pleasurable experiences are not as valuable as knowing that we are living in contact with reality. We should cherish and desire our lives in our realistic world; false pleasure experiences have no real value. In our lives, we want to BE certain people to plug in to an experience machine is to commit a form of suicide. (NozickВІ 2010, 1) Plugging into an experience in order for you to merely experience false happenings would be lying to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Sunset Boulevard Essay A fragment of life in Hollywood is being spread over the screen of the Music Hall in Sunset Boulevard. Utilizing as the premise of their forthcoming, burning dramatization a shameful circumstance including a blurred, maturing quiet screen star and a destitute, pessimistic youthful scriptwriter, Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder(with an aid from D. M. Marshman, Jr.) have composed an effective story of the aspirations and disappointments that join to make life in the cardboard city so entrancing to the outside world. Sunset Boulevard is in no way, shape or form an adjusted story of Hollywood, past or present. Be that as it may it is such a cunning compound of truth and legend and is so lavishly fragrant of the past, yet so contemporaneous that it apparently talks with extraordinary power. Sunset Boulevard is that uncommon mix of impactful composition, master acting, excellent course, and inconspicuously aesthetic photography which rapidly does magic over a crowd of people and holds it excited to a shattering peak. Gloria Swanson was persuaded out of long retirement to depict the woeful, overlooked film monarch, Norma Desmond, and now it can be said that it is endless that any other individual may have been considered for the part. • 51. The Fundamental Principles Of The Us Constitution One of the fundamental principles of the US Constitution is the freedom of speech. Something so ingrained in the country, that it is often an afterthought for many Americans. John Stuart Mill believes that freedom of expression and speech is a necessity for the human race to advance and evolve. Mill s justification of this absolute freedom come from the understanding that mistakes and choices made by the person leads to progress and the development of your individual self. He also argues that speech must be absolute because the only way harm can truly come about, is through action. Mill s harm principle states that, the only reason for power to be legitimately exercised over a people is to prevent harm to others. It also sought to limit the actions of a possible tyrannical majority that begins to impose its interests on the public. Mill claims that the only limit that should be placed on expression is if it leads to the harms of others, it is not to be infringed upon if it only harms the individual. James Madison agreed with many of the concepts of Mill s free speech, but thought a limit on speech was a sign of a breach of power, which was reflected in the drafting of the First Amendment. Recent Supreme Court cases have ruled in favor of limiting certain forms of speech that speaks to a clear and present danger, when words aren t simply content, but a vehicle for action.
