Editor's Notes

  • #5 When volunteering your skills Internationally - aka Experteering - it is important to remember our assumptions are not always right. To be effective, an Experteer should fully grasp the state of global development, both locally and globally.   Be careful of assumptions, and spend time researching, observing, and immersing yourself before attempting to support local efforts. If Hans was going to talk to you before your Experteering trip, he would say: If you have the financial means to travel the world, it's probably because you came from a country that first developed it's economy, and then was able to build social services. As Hans highlights, consider the USA 100 years ago vs. China today. Your impression of the location you're going to might be wrong, so don't carry this notion of a "developing" country- instead, focus on standing as equals and working together for everyone's good.
  • #6 Responsible development is achieved when enterprises can access capital, markets, and TALENT to scale, provide essential services to more people, and create jobs. However, according to leading global development organizations, "Lack of access to talent is the 2nd leading barrier to progress." In other words, a lack of access to expertise is hindering progress.2 By volunteering your skills - going Experteering - you are not only working on projects to help accelerate progress, but also transferring knowledge to others to continue to accelerate impact after you leave.3
  • #23 Reflection is another word for learning, but reflection is learning based off of experience. Through reflection people analyze concepts, evaluate experiences, and form opinions. Beyond accelerating learning, reflection also improves happiness.7 We encourage Experteer’s to take time to reflect before, during, and after your experience. It will support you during your trip and also allow you to take the lessons you learned and apply them to your work and life at home.
