Number of Reported Disasters by Country
 During the 10 year period 2007 - 2017, there were 3,540 disasters, with
683,020 deaths and 2,100 million people affected
 Climate change will increase the frequency and consequences of such
events
 Between 2010 and 2050 the number of people over 65 in less developed
countries is expected to increase more than 250 percent
 By 2050, 66% of the world’s population will reside in cities
 80% of the ten largest cities are at risk of being severely affected by an
earthquake, and 60% are vulnerable to storm surge and tsunami waves
 Vulnerability introduced by local conditions such as poverty, government
corruption, poorly planned development, and environmental degradation
are adding to the risk

How TIEMS Navigates in the Global Environment
10
TIEMS prepares the world for emergencies. We are a
global forum for education, training, certification,
and policy for emergency and disaster
management. We do not respond to emergencies: we
ensure that others are ready to respond. This is
important internationally because some parts of the
world otherwise have limited support for preparation.
As the international community discovers and
develops new technologies, methodologies, and best
practices, we offer conferences, ongoing forums, and
training courses that rapidly and continuously spread
the knowledge to every corner of the community. As
policy makers grow to understand both the need for
preparation and the support TIEMS provides, we
expect to influence policy choices that strengthen
cooperation among regional communities before a
disaster strikes.
MISSION
 International Conferences, Workshops and Exhibitions, focusing on
different Emergency Management and Disaster Topics
 Electronic Newsletter with latest News and Articles of Interest and
Monthly Messages from TIEMS President
 Research & Development Project Initiatives and Coordination of RTD
Projects
 International Education, Training and Certification Programs
 Global Young Scientist Network
 Local Chapter Activity to Stimulate Local Initiatives and Build a Global
Expert Network where different Cultural Practises are added value
 Task Force Groups

  • 10. How TIEMS Navigates in the Global Environment 10 TIEMS prepares the world for emergencies. We are a global forum for education, training, certification, and policy for emergency and disaster management. We do not respond to emergencies: we ensure that others are ready to respond. This is important internationally because some parts of the world otherwise have limited support for preparation. As the international community discovers and develops new technologies, methodologies, and best practices, we offer conferences, ongoing forums, and training courses that rapidly and continuously spread the knowledge to every corner of the community. As policy makers grow to understand both the need for preparation and the support TIEMS provides, we expect to influence policy choices that strengthen cooperation among regional communities before a disaster strikes.
