Your formal analysis should include a description of the piece using terminology (Visual Elements and Principles of Design in the order they are listed in the outline provided), and details of the work that have led you to come to some understanding of what the artist is communicating. Your analysis should have a sense of order, moving purposefully through your description, from one term to the next, with regard to each specific element. How do the visual elements and principles of design work within the work of art to create the meaning you are addressing? Remember that your analysis should not be just a mechanical, physical description. Please use descriptive language and adjectives to describe your work.
To aid in writing a formal analysis, you should think as if you were describing the work of art to someone who has never seen it before. What do you see? When your reader finishes reading your analysis, she/he should have a complete mental picture of what the work lo.

Rhetorical Analysis
Your third major paper for this class will be a rhetorical analysis of two texts of your choice. In order for you to write effectively, you must be able analyze how these texts work to achieve their purposes. This assignment gives you the opportunity to analyze the argument and rhetorical context of these texts, compare how they work in relation to their rhetorical settings, and discuss their effectiveness in their own contexts.
In order to conduct the comparative rhetorical analysis, you need to choose two texts that are related to each other in some way. You could, for example, choose two advertisements for the same product that are located in different magazines (or different cultures), or, you could choose two speeches on the same topic that are delivered to different audiences (these are just examples – there are many possibilities). In your paper you will be analyzing the texts in terms of their overall purpose, argument, and structure (including ethos, pathos, and logos), paying close attention to how the text relates to the context of the text (audience, purpose, context, author).
In your analysis you should:
1. Write a brief summary of both of the texts you are analyzing. The summaries should contain a description of the features of both texts as well as a description of the main goal/purpose/argument of both texts.
2. Identify and explain the rhetorical situation of the text by focusing on the type of text, the target audience, the author, and the purpose. Remember that texts may have more than one audience and purpose. Use examples and evidence from the text to show how author of the text is relating or not relating to the rhetorical situation.
3. Identify and analyze how the author uses rhetorical strategies (ethos, pathos, logos) to connect with and support his claim for his target audience. Also, pay attention to how the author uses language, format, word choice, and organization to present information, inform/mislead/flatter/etc. (as we have read about in the texts for the class). Use evidence and examples from the text to show how the author uses rhetorical strategies.
4. Discuss what parts of the text are effective in reaching the audience and what parts of the text are not effective in light of the texts audience/context.
5. Submit both the analysis and the texts you are analyzing to me with your first and final drafts.

OVERVIEW
For this final project you will research two (2) contemporary artists who deal with the theme of
identity. In addition, you will reflect upon and propose an imagined artwork that relates to your own
concept of identity. (Do not worry if you are not artistically inclined, you are NOT expected to create an
actual finished art piece; it is merely a proposal for something you imagine.). The final project will be
presented as a well-researched PowerPoint presentation. Scholarly research and a Works Cited
page/slide are important components of this project.
HOW TO PREPARE

2. Read/review the following from the textbook: Chapter 4.9 (The Body in Art) and 4.10 (Identity, Race, &
Gender in Art); pp. 189 (grey box); 357-359
ARTIST RESEARCH
1. Choose two (2) artists from the list on page three of these instructions. Research your
chosen artists in relation to their interest in a theme of “Identity”.
2. You must use at least three different types of sources in your research project: The artwork
itself will be one source – the most important primary source. Therefore, you must research and
find at least two (2) other types of sources (interview with the artists, scholarly articles, books,
museum website etc.) to use in your study. Most will need to exceed this minimum for a robust
presentation. See page 189 of your textbook for a list of possible primary and secondary sources.
Further resources on how to get started are found in the subheading “Resources” below. You can
find many sources in the library or in one of the library’s databases.
3. Your selection of artists should be intentional and surround a specific sub-topic of identity.
Your research should not focus on identity in only a broad and general way. Clearly identify the sub-
topic that relates to your artists. For example, you may find artists that are similarly interested in
any of the following sub-topics below:
the fluidity of identity
deconstructing cultural, social, or political difference
feminist critique
diversity or artists who create work that explores related cultures, groups, or societies
You may consider choosing artists that work in the same medium (for example, performance
art, painting, or installation) and how that material choice imparts meaning to their work.
4. After selecting your sub-topic and artists, you must decide on a title for your project.

You are being asked to write a 6-8 page analysis essay comparing and contrasting two works of art that represent one or more of the following art forms: visual art, architecture, prose (short story), or poetry (see pg. 6 for some topic possibilities).
The two works of art you select should address a similar theme to make sure you have a point of comparison between the two works.

ARTIST RESEARCH
1. Choose two (2) artists from the list on page three of these instructions. Research your
chosen artists in relation to their interest in a theme of “Identity”.
2. You must use at least three different types of sources in your research project: The artwork
itself will be one source – the most important primary source. Therefore, you must research and
find at least two (2) other types of sources (interview with the artists, scholarly articles, books,
museum website etc.) to use in your study. Most will need to exceed this minimum for a robust
presentation. See page 189 of your textbook for a list of possible primary and secondary sources.
Further resources on how to get started are found in the subheading “Resources” below. You can
find many sources in the library or in one of the library’s databases.
3. Your selection of artists should be intentional and surround a specific sub-topic of identity.
Your research should not focus on identity in only a broad and general way. Clearly identify the sub-
topic that relates to your artists. For example, you may find artists that are similarly interested in
any of the following sub-topics below:
the fluidity of identity
deconstructing cultural, social, or political difference
feminist critique
diversity or artists who create work that explores related cultures, groups, or societies
You may consider choosing artists that work in the same medium (for example, performance
art, painting, or installation) and how that material choice imparts meaning to their work.
4. After selecting your sub-topic and artists, you must decide on a title for your project.

You are being asked to write a 6-8 page analysis essay comparing and contrasting two works of art that represent one or more of the following art forms: visual art, architecture, prose (short story), or poetry (see pg. 6 for some topic possibilities).
The two works of art you select should address a similar theme to make sure you have a point of comparison between the two works.
· In the BSP:Content:Course Resources folder, I have included several subfolders (such as Literature, Visual Art, and Architecture Resources or Research & Citation Resources) with links to resources you should use to help analyze the works of art and correctly format and structure the paper, including MLA in-text parenthetical and bibliographic citations.
· I have also included an example of a successful student paper that you can consult.
· Consult the rubric (pgs. 11-14) of this document early and often to monitor your progress toward a successful paper.
· Use your feedback from the earlier assignments (especially the inline edits and marginal comments) as well. I expect you to implement my recommended edits from there and from your preliminary work—in fact, it’s part of the rubric score you’ll earn on the final.
Each of the two artworks you select for this assignment needs to be described, analyzed, and interpreted. And the interpretations of the two artworks need to be compared and contrasted.
Overall, think about how subject matter + formal elements or literary devices combine to convey a particular message, meaning, or mood to the reader/viewer, and describe how the artist’s/author’s decisions regarding subject matter and formal elements or literary devices lead the viewer/reader to understand a particular meaning that you explain through your essay.

The tools of formal analysis are the starting point for understanding any work of art; these tools help you realize how a work of art was made and develop a deeper appreciation of it.
Step 1: Examine
Choose a work of art (1.3.6 (Caravaggio p. 79);
or
2.2.27 (Baca p. 224);
or
4.1.13 (Rivera p. 576)).
Start your formal analysis by taking a long look at the artwork using Part I of this book, the elements and principles of art as they relate to your chosen work.
Step 2: Write
Work of Art information:
State the title, artist, date, dimensions, and medium (what it is made of).
State the name of the exhibition in which the work was displayed/ where the artwork is located
Draft a thorough, detailed description of the work of art you chose.
Be sure to:
Write your
formal analysis
. Visually analyze and describe the contents of the work of art. Apply a minimum of 5 elements
and
5 principles of art vocabulary words as you discuss the art.
Include an additional
method of analysis
that is discussed in chapter 1.10 (Learning Module 2.5) to guide your research in order to understand why the artwork was made and what its message is.
Investigate the artist’s life when the work was created. Delve into the time and place in which he or she lived.
What symbols did the artist use, and what was his or her state of mind? Recognize that some artworks are meant to convey distinct messages, which were clear to their contemporary audiences.
Step 3:
Organize your findings into a combined analysis paper
using MLA format
. Your analysis should be a minimum of 800 words.
Use reliable sources. Include your research, as well as your own opinions, to form your interpretation of the artwork.
Before you submit... make sure that you have the following:
Formal analysis of the work of art selected
Identify and discuss one additional mode of analysis
The analysis length should be 3 - 5 pages
Use MLA format (Times New Roman 12 point size font, double-spaced, appropriate in-text citations, Works Cited page, etc...)
Cite external sources
Similarity Report must within 0-10%

It should take into account potential restrictions of human rights, too. It should also reflect the current state of knowledge regarding homeland security and counter- / anti- terrorism. Include a statement that reflects your findings on what types of terror-related incidents are considered most likely to occur inside the U.S. (all 50 states, not just the 48 continental ones).

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
