Handout: Using Quotes Effectively
For this assignment, you may cite course texts informally, using parenthetical
citation (as in the examples below). However, if you choose to bring in any
outside texts or materials, you should provide full citation information,
including a Works Cited page. In general, you may use the citation format of
your choice (MLA-style, Chicago style, etc.), but you must use it correctly and
consistently.
Regular quotes (whether complete sentences or snippets of text) should always
appear in quotation marks – except for long citations (four lines or more),
which should presented as block quotes, indented and single-spaced, but without
quotation marks.
What is most important is to integrate quotes and other authors’ ideas into your
text in a clear and thoughtful way. Rather than simply dropping in a quote, it
is much better to set it up, in order to indicate whose quote it is, to
introduce necessary information and context, and to situate it in your analysis.
Do not assume that a quote can simply “speak for itself.” After a quote, it is
useful to parse out the key terms and assumptions – and, if you choose to, to
question them.
When you set up a quote, try to avoid using “says” (e.g. “Sontag says that …”).
It is too informal, and also incorrect, as we are generally referring to written
sources. Find good specific verbs to use instead: argues, proposes, concludes,
describes, outlines, suggests, etc.
Incorporating Quotes into your revised essay will take some work. You have to
decide what is most important to you in the readings, and what points or
arguments most resonate with you. And of course, you may agree or disagree with
the quotes or points that you choose. To integrate them will probably require
not simply extending but also rearranging your essay somewhat, and perhaps
rethinking or revising your own argument or analysis.
EXAMPLE 1:
Diane Arbus described the camera as “a kind of license” that allowed her to
transgress social boundaries and have access to people’s intimate lives. As she
notes, “A lot of people, they want to be paid that much attention and it’s a
reasonable kind of attention to be paid” (Arbus, p. 3). Thus, in a portrait like
Young man with curlers at home on West 20th Street, NY (1966), the young man’s
candid gaze and gestures convey his own investment in the attention and interest
Arbus brought to their encounter. If going to shoot new subjects was, as Arbus
suggested, like “a blind date,” we feel that it involved risk and excitement for
both her and her sitter.

Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be
to define and evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your
intellect and perception, arouse interest and convey meaning. In most cases, then, you
will be translating the visual (what you see, or observe) into language (what you write).
In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—your observations.
This means that your description will incorporate a large portion of your essay. Remember
to be attentive to the vocabulary of the discipline of Art. I f you do not know what a word means, better not to use it.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the artwork you have chosen.
Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to make that
point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of
essays in the Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an
organized format and structure, clear and coherent paragraphs, and a command of
grammar and style.
Comparison and Contrast
In many beginning Art History courses, and in more advanced ones as well, you
will be asked to write a paper in which you make a comparison and contrast between two
works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.
Unless the assignment specifies a work-by-work approach, it is usually best that
you do not divide the paper into two discrete sections: a discussion of one work of art
followed by a discussion of the other. Instead, each paragraph can include discussion of
both works in relation to a particular element or a well thought-out combination of

Handout: Using Quotes Effectively
For this assignment, you may cite course texts informally, using parenthetical
citation (as in the examples below). However, if you choose to bring in any
outside texts or materials, you should provide full citation information,
including a Works Cited page. In general, you may use the citation format of
your choice (MLA-style, Chicago style, etc.), but you must use it correctly and
consistently.
Regular quotes (whether complete sentences or snippets of text) should always
appear in quotation marks – except for long citations (four lines or more),
which should presented as block quotes, indented and single-spaced, but without
quotation marks.
What is most important is to integrate quotes and other authors’ ideas into your
text in a clear and thoughtful way. Rather than simply dropping in a quote, it
is much better to set it up, in order to indicate whose quote it is, to
introduce necessary information and context, and to situate it in your analysis.
Do not assume that a quote can simply “speak for itself.” After a quote, it is
useful to parse out the key terms and assumptions – and, if you choose to, to
question them.
When you set up a quote, try to avoid using “says” (e.g. “Sontag says that …”).
It is too informal, and also incorrect, as we are generally referring to written
sources. Find good specific verbs to use instead: argues, proposes, concludes,
describes, outlines, suggests, etc.
Incorporating Quotes into your revised essay will take some work. You have to
decide what is most important to you in the readings, and what points or
arguments most resonate with you. And of course, you may agree or disagree with
the quotes or points that you choose. To integrate them will probably require
not simply extending but also rearranging your essay somewhat, and perhaps
rethinking or revising your own argument or analysis.
EXAMPLE 1:
Diane Arbus described the camera as “a kind of license” that allowed her to
transgress social boundaries and have access to people’s intimate lives. As she
notes, “A lot of people, they want to be paid that much attention and it’s a
reasonable kind of attention to be paid” (Arbus, p. 3). Thus, in a portrait like
Young man with curlers at home on West 20th Street, NY (1966), the young man’s
candid gaze and gestures convey his own investment in the attention and interest
Arbus brought to their encounter. If going to shoot new subjects was, as Arbus
suggested, like “a blind date,” we feel that it involved risk and excitement for
both her and her sitter.
EXAMPLE 2:
In the statement published in the catalogue to her posthumous 1972 exhibition,
Diane Arbus famously outlined what she termed “the flaw”: “Everybody has that
thing where they need to look one way but they come out looking another way and

Writing about Art
Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be
to define and evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your
intellect and perception, arouse interest and convey meaning. In most cases, then, you
will be translating the visual (what you see, or observe) into language (what you write).
In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—your observations.
This means that your description will incorporate a large portion of your essay. Remember
to be attentive to the vocabulary of the discipline of Art. I f you do not know what a word means, better not to use it.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the artwork you have chosen.
Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to make that
point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of
essays in the Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an
organized format and structure, clear and coherent paragraphs, and a command of
grammar and style.
Comparison and Contrast
In many beginning Art History courses, and in more advanced ones as well, you
will be asked to write a paper in which you make a comparison and contrast between two
works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.
Unless the assignment specifies a work-by-work approach, it is usually best that
you do not divide the paper into two discrete sections: a discussion of one work of art
followed by a discussion of the other. Instead, each paragraph can include discussion of
both works in relation to a particular element or a well thought-out combination of

11. Are there lines in the work(s)? If so, what kinds of lines are they?
12. What sort of textures do you see? How would you describe them?
13. What time of day/night is it? How can we tell?

Analyze: Mentally separate the parts or elements, thinking in terms of textures, shapes/forms,
light/dark or bright/dull colors, types of lines, and sensory qualities. In this step consider the
most significant art principles that were used in the artwork. Describe how the artist used them
to organize the elements. Suggested questions to help with analysis:

Interpret: An interpretation seeks to explain the meaning of the work based on what you have

“What distinguishes literature from other forms of knowledge is that it cannot be understood unless we understand what it means to be human.” (J. Bronowski)
There are many ways to interpret, analyze, and evaluate literature. Perhaps you’ve already been asked to make an observation or take a position about a work of literature (whether a poem, short story, novel, play, or film) and examine such elements as plot, characters, theme, setting, conflict, structure, point of view, imagery, or symbolism. When you are asked by a teacher to write an interpretation, a critique, or a literary analysis, you are being asked to figure out what is going on in a work of literature. Much more complicated than merely summarizing a piece or writing a personal reaction to it, literary analysis requires that you read between the lines of a text and discover something meaningful there. Why does a specific image recur throughout a poem? How does a novel relate to a social issue facing the author at the time it was written? Do you recognize a pattern or perceive a problem with a character’s behavior in a play? How is the role of women significant in a movie? Answers to all of these questions can be determined only through critical thinking and the synthesis of your ideas.
· An interpretation—explains a text’s overall meaning or significance, explaining your reasoning for this interpretation with supporting evidence from the text.
· A critique—also called a critical response or a review, it provides your personal judgment about a text, supported by reasons and references to the work of art and often secondary sources.· A formal analysis—different from a critique in that examines a work of art by breaking it down into various elements to discover how the parts interrelate to create meaning of effect.
· A cultural analysis—examines a work of art by relating it to the historical, social, cultural, or political situations in which it was written to show how the author was influenced by personal experiences, events, prevailing attitudes, or contemporary values.
How can I persuade readers that my view or interpretation is reasonable?
First, be sure that your view or interpretation asserts a debatable claim.
For instance, if you were to say that “Antigone is a play about a young woman who questions authority,” you wouldn’t be saying much beyond a summary. But if you said that, “Antigone’s punishment is well-deserved because she violates the laws of the king,” that is debatable. Another student could just as easily argue that Antigone’s punishment is not well-deserved and that she should be commended for respecting the higher laws of the gods over the laws of the king.

For the third essay assignment you will write a piece of art criticism, that is, an essay that examines an artwork (or two or three related works) in detail and with insight. Your subject may come from any of the genres of cultural production we’ve discussed: literature, art, film, theatre, dance, food, fashion, design, architecture, advertising, the list goes on. Make an argument for why these works are interesting, thought-provoking, and moving.
It is important that you choose something not merely because you like it, but because you feel there is something there to explore intellectually, something meaningful to say or discover about it. Keep in mind our discussions of what culture does for us, what we do with it, and why we seek it out. Think about cultural objects and activities as the free and creative response to life in a given society and time, or to some of the conditions of human life generally. Remember that art involves a marriage of meaning and form. That is, we don’t just care what art means or says, we care how that meaning has been created or constructed. In artworks, arguments and ideas are always embodied in form.
Past papers have considered a trio films depicting the Holocaust, visual art concerned with the effects of technology on modern society, the depiction of romantic love in Korean soap operas. The possibilities are vast. The important thing is to clearly connect ideas and questions to the works of culture. Your own voice and mind should lead the way as you interpret, analyze, and describe. Avoid at all costs a paper that dumps a lot of information or biography on the reader.

Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is for you to have a
face to face
experience with an artistic work and then write about your response to it. This means that you must witness something live, i.e., in bodily form rather than in virtual form (a movie, book, internet site would not work).
You must attend this experience this semester

Dance concert at college level or professional
Theater performance at college level or professional
Requirements:
Use good judgment in choosing an art experience. Your little niece’s ballet recital is not going to give you an experience that relates to the content of this course. A natural history museum, science museum, or historical exhibit is
not
appropriate. Do not write about work by a person who you know personally. Do not write about works on campus, which are not in the Arts Gallery. You must visit an art museum, art gallery, or theater or dance performance space!!!!

Act as if you are writing for an audience who hasn’t seen or experienced the artwork(s) or performance. Your reader (me) is only able to experience the work(s) through your words. It is your responsibility to look at the work(s) as objectively as possible and articulate these findings to me. Your reader depends on YOU to make the appropriate word choices, to consider what the artist may or may not be doing. You should avoid reading anything about the work other than: the title, the artist’s name, and the material used. The whole purpose of this assignment is to help you to learn how to trust your own abilities to observe, using your own senses, and make conclusions.

I. The Purpose of a Literary Analysis:
A literary analysis is not merely a summary of a literary work. This kind of analysis analysis, like any analysis, is just that:
ANALYTICAL! It is intended to reveal and/or explain meaning. Thus, the assumption is that meaning exists, and it is the job of a (close/active) reader to ferret it out and offer a response to it!
Far from being a mere summary, it is an argument, essentially, about the work that expresses the essay writer’s personal perspective, interpretation, judgment, or critical evaluation. This is accomplished by examining the literary devices, word choices, or writing structures the author uses within the work first, followed by a critical analysis of content. Another purpose of a literary analysis is to demonstrate why the author used specific ideas, word choices, or writing structures to convey his or her message.
II. How to Create a Literary Analysis:
1. Select (and ideally
print) one of the stories listed on my Learning Web page (linked on the Canvas assignment page for this essay assignment). The stories listed here are the only acceptable stories for this assignment, and they are all in full text so there’s no need to find them elsewhere.
2. Read the text closely at least a couple of times. Focus on the ideas that are being presented. Think about the characters’ development and the author’s writing technique. What might be considered interesting, unusual, or important?
3. Brainstorm a list of potential topics. Highlight important passages in the text and take notes on these passages. Think of the ideas/concepts that strike you as you read. Later, when writing the paper, these notes should help a writer to .

Guide to Writing a Formal Analysis
Description: A formal analysis includes an analysis of the forms appearing in the work you have chosen. These forms give the work its expression, message, or meaning. A formal analysis assumes a work of art is (1) a constructed object (2) that has been created with a stable meaning (even though it might not be clear to the viewer) (3) that can be ascertained by studying the relationships between the elements of the work. To aid in writing a formal analysis, you should think as if you were describing the work of art to someone who has never seen it before. When your reader finishes reading your analysis, she/he should have a complete mental picture of what the work looks like. Yet, the formal analysis is more than just a description of the work. It should also include a thesis statement/theme that reflects your conclusions about the work. The thesis statement may, in general, answer a question like these: What do I think is the meaning of this work? What is the message that this work or artist sends to the viewer? What is this work all about? The thesis statement is an important element. It sets the tone for the entire paper, and sets it apart from being a merely descriptive paper.
Format for the Paper: Two pages, double-spaced, 10 or 12 pt font, 1” borders. Make sure you proofread your papers for adhering to the information listed above, as well as incorrect grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other errors.
In the first paragraph, called the introduction, you will include:
•the name of the artist (if known), title (which is underlined or italicizedevery time you use the title in your paper), date
•what you think is the subject
•a very brief description of the work
•thesis statement - usually the last line or so of your first paragraph.
From that point, the rest of the formal analysis should include not only a description of the piece, but especially those details of the work that have led you to come to your conclusion. Yet, your paper should not be a random flow of ideas about the work (i.e. stream of consciousness writing). Rather, your paper should have a sense of order, moving purposefully through your description with regard to specific elements (ex: one paragraph may deal with composition, another with a description of the figures, another with the background, another about line, etc.). Finally, in your conclusion (the final paragraph) you should end your paper by pulling your threads together in a conclusion that in some way bears a relationship with your stated theme.

Generally, the essays you write in literature courses attempt to answer interesting questions about works of literature. These questions are interesting for at least two reasons: a) their answers are not obvious, and b) their answers (or at least the attempt to answer them) can enrich other readers’ understanding and experience of those works of literature. Often works of literature seem to be intentionally posing these questions to us; they require us to do some work to get them to work.
Readers have asked many different types of questions of works of literature, for example:
· What did the author want to communicate in this work?
· What does the work reveal about the author’s feelings, opinions, or psychology?
· What does the work reveal about the society in which it was written?
· What can we learn from this work about the issues or topics it deals with?
· What motivates the characters in the work to behave as they do?
· How are literary devices used in the work?
· How does the work create emotional or intellectual experiences for its readers?
· Is this work good or bad?
· Is this work good or bad for its readers?
Some of these questions require information from outside the text itself; for example, to argue that a work reveals a writer’s psychological condition, it would be helpful to have some other evidence of that condition to corroborate your interpretation of the work of literature. Some of these questions ask about the world outside the work—about the author, his/her society, or our own society, for example—while others try to focus more on the features of the work itself. Analyses which try to make statements about the work itself is often calledformalist criticism: it attends more to the structures and strategies employed in the work. Ultimately, such arguments generally do try to move beyond the work, to claim, for instance, that it is likely to create certain effects in its readers, or that readers will understand the writer’s intent more clearly if they pay attention to its formal characteristic.
In LIT 100, we are going to be paying attention primarily to these formal features of literary works. In fiction, some of these features include tone, point of view, setting, character, etc. We will be paying less attention to extra-textual features, such as the author’s biography or the historical contexts in which the literature was produced and/or read; these elements are not less important than formal features, but they naturally vary greatly from one work to another and often require in-depth study to truly appreciate. In a nutshell, critical methodologies are different LENSES through which a reader can examine a particular text (short story, poem, play, novel, etc.). Alison Booth and Kelly J. Mays, the editors of our textbook, classify critical approaches into four major categories:

analyze a work of fiction from my list of options (see link on Canvas assignment page). This essay requires you to

I. The Purpose of a Literary Analysis:
A literary analysis is not merely a summary of a literary work. This kind of analysis analysis, like any analysis, is just that:
ANALYTICAL! It is intended to reveal and/or explain meaning. Thus, the assumption is that meaning exists, and it is the job of a (close/active) reader to ferret it out and offer a response to it!
Far from being a mere summary, it is an argument, essentially, about the work that expresses the essay writer’s personal perspective, interpretation, judgment, or critical evaluation. This is accomplished by examining the literary devices, word choices, or writing structures the author uses within the work first, followed by a critical analysis of content. Another purpose of a literary analysis is to demonstrate why the author used specific ideas, word choices, or writing structures to convey his or her message.
II. How to Create a Literary Analysis:
1. Select (and ideally
print) one of the stories listed on my Learning Web page (linked on the Canvas assignment page for this essay assignment). The stories listed here are the only acceptable stories for this assignment, and they are all in full text so there’s no need to find them elsewhere.
2. Read the text closely at least a couple of times. Focus on the ideas that are being presented. Think about the characters’ development and the author’s writing technique. What might be considered interesting, unusual, or important?
3. Brainstorm a list of potential topics. Highlight important passages in the text and take notes on these passages. Think of the ideas/concepts that strike you as you read. Later, when writing the paper, these notes should help a writer to .

Guide to Writing a Formal Analysis
Description: A formal analysis includes an analysis of the forms appearing in the work you have chosen. These forms give the work its expression, message, or meaning. A formal analysis assumes a work of art is (1) a constructed object (2) that has been created with a stable meaning (even though it might not be clear to the viewer) (3) that can be ascertained by studying the relationships between the elements of the work. To aid in writing a formal analysis, you should think as if you were describing the work of art to someone who has never seen it before. When your reader finishes reading your analysis, she/he should have a complete mental picture of what the work looks like. Yet, the formal analysis is more than just a description of the work. It should also include a thesis statement/theme that reflects your conclusions about the work. The thesis statement may, in general, answer a question like these: What do I think is the meaning of this work? What is the message that this work or artist sends to the viewer? What is this work all about? The thesis statement is an important element. It sets the tone for the entire paper, and sets it apart from being a merely descriptive paper.
Format for the Paper: Two pages, double-spaced, 10 or 12 pt font, 1” borders. Make sure you proofread your papers for adhering to the information listed above, as well as incorrect grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other errors.
In the first paragraph, called the introduction, you will include:
•the name of the artist (if known), title (which is underlined or italicizedevery time you use the title in your paper), date
•what you think is the subject
•a very brief description of the work
•thesis statement - usually the last line or so of your first paragraph.
From that point, the rest of the formal analysis should include not only a description of the piece, but especially those details of the work that have led you to come to your conclusion. Yet, your paper should not be a random flow of ideas about the work (i.e. stream of consciousness writing). Rather, your paper should have a sense of order, moving purposefully through your description with regard to specific elements (ex: one paragraph may deal with composition, another with a description of the figures, another with the background, another about line, etc.). Finally, in your conclusion (the final paragraph) you should end your paper by pulling your threads together in a conclusion that in some way bears a relationship with your stated theme.
NO RESEARCH IS TO BE USED IN THIS PAPER. In other words, you are strictly relying on your ability to visually ‘read’ a work of art and make interpretations about it based on your analysis of it. Generally, the essays you write in literature courses attempt to answer interesting questions about works of literature. These questions are interesting for at least two reasons: a) their answers are not obvious, and b) their answers (or at least the attempt to answer them) can enrich other readers’ understanding and experience of those works of literature. Often works of literature seem to be intentionally posing these questions to us; they require us to do some work to get them to work.
Readers have asked many different types of questions of works of literature, for example:
· What did the author want to communicate in this work?
· What does the work reveal about the author’s feelings, opinions, or psychology?
· What does the work reveal about the society in which it was written?
· What can we learn from this work about the issues or topics it deals with?
· What motivates the characters in the work to behave as they do?
· How are literary devices used in the work?
· How does the work create emotional or intellectual experiences for its readers?
· Is this work good or bad?
· Is this work good or bad for its readers?
Some of these questions require information from outside the text itself; for example, to argue that a work reveals a writer’s psychological condition, it would be helpful to have some other evidence of that condition to corroborate your interpretation of the work of literature. Some of these questions ask about the world outside the work—about the author, his/her society, or our own society, for example—while others try to focus more on the features of the work itself. Analyses which try to make statements about the work itself is often calledformalist criticism: it attends more to the structures and strategies employed in the work. Ultimately, such arguments generally do try to move beyond the work, to claim, for instance, that it is likely to create certain effects in its readers, or that readers will understand the writer’s intent more clearly if they pay attention to its formal characteristic.
In LIT 100, we are going to be paying attention primarily to these formal features of literary works. In fiction, some of these features include tone, point of view, setting, character, etc. We will be paying less attention to extra-textual features, such as the author’s biography or the historical contexts in which the literature was produced and/or read; these elements are not less important than formal features, but they naturally vary greatly from one work to another and often require in-depth study to truly appreciate. To understand how Shakespeare’s social situation in London in the 1590s might have been reflected in his plays would require a whole course in Elizabethan history. Literary Analysis
In this essay you should combine your practice responding and analyzing short stories with support derived from research. So far, in the discussion boards, we have practiced primarily formal analysis. Now I want you to practice "joining the conversation." In this essay you will write a literary analysis that incorporates the ideas of others. The trick is to accurately present ideas and interpretations gathered from your research while adding to the conversation by presenting
your own
ideas and analysis.
You will be evaluated, in part, on how well you use external sources. I want to see that you can quote, paraphrase and summarize without plagiarizing. Remember, any unique idea must be credited, even if you put it in your own words.
Choose one of the approaches explained in the "Approaches to Literary Analysis" located at the bottom of this document. Each approach will require research, and that research should provide the context in which you present your own ideas and support your thesis. Be sure to properly document your research. Review the links in the "Writing about Literature" tab as these will help guide you.
While I am asking you to conduct outside research, do not lose sight of the primary text to which you are responding---the story! Your research should support
your
interpretations of the story. Be sure that your thesis is relevant to the story and that you quote generously from the story.

Description: A formal analysis includes an analysis of the forms appearing in the work you have
chosen. These forms give the work its expression, message, or meaning. A formal analysis assumes a
work of art is (1) a constructed object (2) that has been created with a stable meaning (even though it
might not be clear to the viewer) (3) that can be ascertained by studying the relationships between the
elements of the work. To aid in writing a formal analysis, you should think as if you were describing
the work of art to someone who has never seen it before. When your reader finishes reading your
analysis, she/he should have a complete mental picture of what the work looks like. Yet, the formal
analysis is more than just a description of the work. It should also include a thesis statement that
reflects your conclusions about the work. The thesis statement may, in general, answer a question like
these: What do I think is the meaning of this work? What is the message that this work or artist sends
to the viewer? What is this work all about? The thesis statement is an important element. It sets the
tone for the entire paper, and sets it apart from being a merely descriptive paper.
Format for the Paper: Two to three pages (not including title page, if you use one), black ink, double
spaced, 12 pt type (Times New Roman only), 1” borders. Make sure you proofread your papers for
adhering to the information listed above, as well as incorrect grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other
errors. In addition, make sure your paper includes a thesis statement. Your grade will reflect your
ability to follow these guidelines.
In the first paragraph, called the introduction, you will include:
•the name of the artist (if known), title (which is underlined or italicized every time you use the
title in your paper), date, and medium (if known)
•what you think is the subject
•a very brief description of the work
•thesis statement - usually the last line or so of your first paragraph.
From that point, the rest of the formal analysis should include not only a description of the piece, but
especially those details of the work that have led you to come to your thesis. Yet, your paper should
not be a random flow of ideas about the work (i.e. stream of consciousness writing). Rather, your paper
should have a sense of order, moving purposefully through your description with regard to specific
elements (ex: one paragraph may deal with composition, another with a description of the figures,
another with the background, another about line, etc.). Finally, in your conclusion (the final paragraph)
you should end your paper with a restatement of your thesis.
It is important to remember that your interest here is strict.

Generally, the essays you write in literature courses attempt to answer interesting questions about works of literature. These questions are interesting for at least two reasons: a) their answers are not obvious, and b) their answers (or at least the attempt to answer them) can enrich other readers’ understanding and experience of those works of literature. Often works of literature seem to be intentionally posing these questions to us; they require us to do some work to get them to work.
Readers have asked many different types of questions of works of literature, for example:
What did the author want to communicate in this work?
What does the work reveal about the author’s feelings, opinions, or psychology?
What does the work reveal about the society in which it was written?
What can we learn from this work about the issues or topics it deals with?
What motivates the characters in the work to behave as they do?
How are literary devices used in the work?
How does the work create emotional or intellectual experiences for its readers?
Is this work good or bad?
Is this work good or bad for its readers?
Some of these questions require information from outside the text itself; for example, to argue that a work reveals a writer’s psychological condition, it would be helpful to have some other evidence of that condition to corroborate your interpretation of the work of literature. Some of these questions ask about the world outside the work—about the author, his/her society, or our own society, for example—while others try to focus more on the features of the work itself.
Analyses which try to make statements about the work itself
is often called
formalist
criticism: it attends more to the structures and strategies employed in the work. Ultimately, such arguments generally do try to move beyond the work, to claim, for instance, that it is likely to create certain effects in its readers, or that readers will understand the writer’s intent more clearly if they pay attention to its formal characteristic.
In LIT 100, we are going to be paying attention primarily to these formal features of literary works. In fiction, some of these features include tone, point of view, setting, character, etc. We will be paying less attention to extra-textual features, such as the author’s biography or the historical contexts in which the literature was produced and/or read; these elements are not less important than formal features, but they naturally vary greatly from one work to another and often require in-depth study to truly appreciate. To understand how Shakespeare’s social situation in London in the 1590s might have been reflected in his plays would require a whole course in Elizabethan history. On the other hand, the formal features we will be studying in this course can be found in literature of all eras and genres, though they may often be used to different effect by different writers at different times. Overview of Critical Methodologies
Imagine 3 pairs of glasses, and each pair of glasses represents a different “lens” through which the wearer of the glasses can view the world. Same world...different view based on the color of the lens.
Critical methodologies (also known as critical approaches) function in the same way. In a nutshell, critical methodologies are different LENSES through which a reader can examine a particular text (short story, poem, play, novel, etc.). Alison Booth and Kelly J. Mays, the editors of our textbook, classify critical approaches into four major categories:
Critical approaches that emphasize the text,
Critical approaches that emphasize the source,
Critical approaches that emphasize the receiver, and
Critical approaches that highlight historical and ideological criticism.
Each major category houses a number of critical approaches.
Emphasis on the Text - This approach limits the consideration of outside elements- author background, social factors, etc.
New Criticism - does not take into consideration source (author) or reader (you)

Colin Kaepernick comes to mind as I speak of racial differences, principles and morals. Colin Kaepernick, when he chose to go beyond the usual practice, effectively gave up his dream. Colin Kaepernick, the American football player who started the National Anthem "take knee" campaign against racial violence against African American and other races. Business ethics is the study of what constitutes right or wrong, good or bad human conduct in a business environment. The introduction of universal ethical principles to particular practical problems in the modern environment, such as dishonesty in ads, bullying, etc., is intended to assess what is "valid" behavior; i.e. what is considered appropriate or "right" conduct in line with universal ethical values (Christie et al, 2003).
I served with a social-service organization in 2013. Within this unique setting, I have been forced to interact alongside a variety of communities and faiths. Each of the SNAP entitlements (Food stamps) is dependent on family revenue and wealth. There was, however, a misconception and theory circulated inside the department that African American culture is lazy and that many of them do not want to function and want to rely on the government for assistance. I know that the theory and the story arose from the deep-rooted fear of the Slavery. Under which racial violence persists and so other groups are still competing and killing each other.
At another agency I worked for I worked with youth directly in a foster care setting. I am African American, and the rest of the children I represent are Hispanic / Latino. I note that when I'm out in the city with my Hispanic / Latino clientele, I typically get a number of stares from various cultures. One of my four-year-old children sometimes holds a temper tantrum to get what she needs from her mother. She decided to have one of these tantrums with me when we were in the grocery shop. I dismissed her actions, and there was a Hispanic lady who came up to me with a really unpleasant attitude, telling me to know what I was doing to the girl. I dismissed her and proceeded to focus on the actions of my client. I assume that she just got embroiled in this scenario because I mistreated this Hispanic child in her opinion, even though I gave her my badge for work. Anything I did with the child was in compliance with the Agency's rules and practices, even when I was being confronted by a consumer in the shop. It's really difficult to deal with babies, youth and even the elderly, so you also have to make sure that you perform it according to policies and procedures. Mandatory ethics was enforced to safeguard the employees who work for the specific organization and even the clients. Professionals are required to recognize and live by their Code of Ethics. Practitioners will need to demonstrate awareness regarding the adaptation of their codes to different cultures (Weber 20004).

Bullying is a form of abuse, aggressiveness, coercion, force. There are other things that bullies do to feel like they are important or better than everyone else, like be dominated, intimidating, or threatening. “Bullying in schools, particularly bias-based bullying, is an important issue for many reasons, but chief among them include evidence that victims being bullied experience both short and long term consequences, including poor school performance, depression, and increased health problems” (Martin, M. I believe that the services of all three would be required because the bully would be evaluated three different times on his behavior and other things that no one may know about. Each of them has their own specialty that would fit working with the bully and being able to determine what is the issue or problem that makes the bully act out of character the way he or she does.

Rules should also be put into place for the bullies to let them know what will happen if they continue to bully others.

Welcome to Innovation Network’s Logic Model Workbook. A logic model is a commonly-used
tool to clarify and depict a program within an organization. You may have heard it described as
a logical framework, theory of change, or program matrix—but the purpose is usually the same:
to graphically depict your program, initiative, project or even the sum total of all of your
organization’s work. It also serves as a
foundation for program planning and
evaluation.
This workbook is a do-it-yourself guide to

I like to tie my learning to Biblical Principles. On Virtuous Leadership, I think about what leader in the Bible do I know that stands out as a virtuous leader. Although there are many, one that stands out to me is Nehemiah. Nehemiah's brother and others said that they had been to Jerusalem and the Wall has been broken down, and the gates were burned. Nehemiah listened and took this news personally as if he was the wounded party. In other words, it broke his heart to hear this news.
He then took personal responsibility, prayed, and asked God to forgive him and his people for not obeying his commands. Then he took personal action, and at great danger to himself, he appeared before the King sad - remember that no King wants a sad cupbearer. When the King saw how sad Nehemiah was, he asked him why, and Nehemiah explained the state of his city walls and asked permission to go and fix them. He went and fixed the walls. He got involved in the work as a servant leader and getting the people what they needed. They had a city again with walls and a gate, and most importantly, they had protection!
We can see in this story that a servant leader is someone who takes personal responsibility for what has gone wrong and sets out to fix it, but not only does he/she fix the problem, the servant leader gets involved in the work and works alongside his workers to get the job done right. By doing so, the servant leader demonstrates his care for his workers and organization.

Essentially, Mills is describing an ability to discern patterns in social events and view personal experiences in light of those patterns. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. From your studies, you have seen how culture, societal norms, belief systems, and past experiences affect the way people view the world. Learning about these differences in perspective helps us to have a better understanding of the overall human experience. Whether analytical skills are applied to a task at work, or a humanistic point of view enables us to grasp an issue from another angle, these methods of looking at the world help us become more aware of our perceptions and provide a deeper and more meaningful existence. In this task, you will analyze and interpret three creative works from three separate disciplines of the humanities using methods of subjective and objective analysis. Objective statements are based on simple observations and concrete information. Subjective statements are based on personal opinions, judgments, and feelings. These standard methods of analysis will enable you to critically view and interpret works from the humanities. You will use analytical and critical thinking skills to assess how meaning is constructed and imparted to a viewer or audience and will communicate your thoughts in a multimedia presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, Keynote). While the content of your presentation will focus on analyzing, interpreting, comparing, and contrasting three creative works from separate disciplines, your overarching goal will be to explain how the three works you analyze demonstrate the value of the humanities in meaningful ways.
- 2. Background: Develop a multimedia presentation in which you analyze three creative works from three separate disciplines in the humanities. You will need to select works that share a common theme. This theme must relate to a profession within your field of study at WGU. You will share with your audience how being knowledgeable about the humanities and your selected theme is valuable in regards to this profession. First you must choose one literary work from the given list below. Choose a literary work that has a theme that resonates with you and consider how this theme connects with your chosen profession. Every profession within your field of study at WGU (Business, IT, Nursing or Teaching) will have humanistic considerations. For example, a civil rights lawyer may be concerned with the theme of freedom, a firefighter with determination, a social worker with compassion, or an engineer with integrity. It is the intent of this task to explore the major themes of the humanities and their relevance to our professional lives. Once you have selected a literary work, you will need to select two non-literary works from separate disciplines that share the same theme as the literary work you have selected. Your presentation will show how all three works connect to the theme that you have chosen, and how that theme relates to a profession within your field of study at WGU. The two nonliterary works you select must come from the following disciplines: two- dimensional visual art (e.g., painting, photography, printmaking,), music or film (feature films, documentaries). You should choose works that appeal to you personally, are striking to you in some way, and/or evoke a strong response in you. In the presentation, you will show how exploration of the themes of these works can enhance performance in your profession and deepen your understanding of the human experience. Note: Your multimedia presentation should contain 25 to 30

You may find that the majority of your slides are most effectively presented in paragraph form, with some utilizing the more traditional bullet point format. Arrange slides in a way that creates cohesion and flow and use images to accentuate and substantiate points. Note: This presentation should demonstrate the depth of the analysis and reflection that you have done. Your challenge will be to communicate your points through a series of clear, focused, and concise slides that represent your knowledge and convey your unique analytical points and insights. Choose four of the elements of literature outlined in the learning resource and describe how they are used in the literary work. 2. Describe the first nonliterary work of art. How your analysis of these works has enhanced your understanding of the human experience (i.e. what it means to be human). 2. How these themes and meanings relate to you, as a professional within your field of study. 3. How a general knowledge of the humanities is valuable for professionals within your field of study. F. Summarize your main points in a conclusion (suggested length of 1-2 slides). Note: Your conclusion could include revisiting your thesis statement and should bring closure to your presentation. G. Create a reference list. Include all in-text citations and references in APA format. You must have a full reference for each work. Please note that each reference must correspond to an in-text citation.
