Murder in the Classroom - Have we killed Creativity?jtrevaskis
Presented at the CEN/CSA State Conference in WA. Murder in the Classroom explores whether we've killed creativity or whether we are allowing students to reflect the image of God through their creativity and creative processes in the classroom.
The other evening I had a wonderful opportunity to spend about 70 minutes with a group of 40ish first and second year teachers in my area. I was asked to come in and help them with some ideas around engagement. At first, I was really struggling with this concept because there are so many deeper issues that lead to students not being engaged in the classroom. While I am not able to solve the problems for each educator, I did try to curate a hands on session that challenged their thinking about simple and free approaches to rethink how we allow students to express learning.
The intended outcome was to have beginning teachers will know and be able to select strategies to engage students and increase motivation.

What do you know when you're having trouble executing or when your passion just isn't quite there? You sit down and get to work. Side projects are a great way to help you get unstuck, and you never know, they can often be much more.

This presentation focused on a pilot-test of a simulation that we are running at St. Edward's University to help students learn about the conflict in Syria. I've been working history faculty members Mity Myhr, Selin Guner, Christopher Mickelwait and Christie Wilson to pull together an experiential workshop for students in Cultural Foundations courses around the topic of the Syria conflict. Our goal for this is to provide an experiential space in which students can learn about the complexities of this conflict by role-playing actors and agencies involved in the conflict. These represent entities such as the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in addition to countries like Turkey in addition to Iran, Russia and the Western Powers.
On April 22, 2013, student groups will role-play these actors and non-actors in a game-like fashion in which they will be given choices of actions to play across a period of 6 game rounds. Each round will be prefaced by a description of one or more critical events, and students will be asked to make decisions about how to respond. Play will be divided into 3 phases–Research, Action and Voting.
Students will be asked to research the event and the actions they can take prior to taking action, and non-actors will be asked to cast votes of Confidence or Contempt for these actions.
Actions will generate scores across dimensions including casualty rates and refugee counts and groups will be presented with a “Win” condition to promote peacemaking in the region.
We successfully pilot-tested this design at a recent World History Association of Texas conference and are looking forward to fleshing out this work for the full event in mid-April.
Presentation about JISC funded blogging project on student blogging. Showed increased confidence about academic writing, deeper engagement, liberal learning. The findings led to adaptations on the MA L&T module on Curriculum Design.

Cultivating Curiosity through Questioning
Humans are naturally curious beings, but as Sir Ken Robinson suggests, schools may have unintentionally squashed out the creativity and inquisitive nature of many of students. While ubiquitous digital devices provide us with the opportunity to find the answer to almost any question, many students struggle to find accurate information online. Now more than ever, we must teach our students to be critical consumers of the information that they encounter. Together we will explore and construct technology resources designed to engage students’ curiosity and learn ways to compose better questions for application and synthesis.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
