Inspiration for my Music Video
Lily Saunders
Inspiration
• In this powerpoint I will be looking at
inspiration for my music video that I have
found from a variety of sources.
Media Video: Daughter - Run
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAd6mk1nD
fo
• I think that for a media student’s work, this video
is incredible. The song links in well to the theme
of heart break that my current song choice
(Nicest Thing) also shares.
• I love the way that the video has been edited and
the different camera shots as well as the mise en
scene within it.
• The following slides show some of my favourite
elements of the video.
Kaleidoscope Camera Effect
Lip Syncing in View in the Corner,
Cleverly Placed in the Scene
Visual Interpretations of the Lyrics
“But the Fire is Coming”
Low Down Filming Angles
Zoom Out of Close Up Shot
Close Up of Protagonists Reaction,
Shows Her Feelings
Tracking Shot Shows them Looking at
Each Other, They Appear to Look in
Opposite Directions
Close Up Shot of Each of Their Eyes
Fan Made Video: Nicest Thing

Sinead O’Connor – Nothing Compares
2U
• I like some of the elements of this music video
such as the slow subtle fading transitions which
worked well with the melancholy feel of the
music.
• Also I think that the protagonist and artist in the
song is a great actor, as she portrays her sadness
through the clips of her wandering round in black
clothes (as though she is grieving) and even her
inability to look directly at the camera which
suggests how devastated she is.
The Use of Fade Transitions Creates a
Smooth Flowing Music Video
The Artist Seems to Struggle to Look
Directly at the Camera Showing How
She Has Lost All Confidence
The Use of Cross Dissolves
Following Protagonist Around, Shows
Her Seemingly Deep in Depression
Reverting Back to the Protagonist We
See That She is Crying
A Zed and Two Noughts
• http://petergreenaway.org.uk/zoo.htm
• I liked the idea of using time lapses in my music
video and so was recommended to look at the
artistic film “A Zed and Two Noughts”.
• The film is about two men’s fascination with
decay over time. They actually create their own
time lapses within the film of different things
decomposing.

500 Days of Summer: Expectations
Versus Reality Scene
• I love this use of the split screen as it gives us
insight into what is on the protagonists mind
as he wishes that he could be with the female
character.
• It helps the audience to sympathise and
empathise with him, and accompanied by the
music it makes the scene very powerful and
touching, especially the lyrics “No one’s got it
all” as this is clearly about him.
This is the First Part of the Scene
Where Expectations Exceed Reality
Here We Learn That He Wants This
Girl’s Love By His Expectations
Again We Watch How He Wishes That
He Could Get Closer to His Love
Interest
Foo Fighters: Best of You
• Not only is this one of my favourite Foo Fighter’s songs, it is also an
excellently made music video.
• Throughout the video they use multiple clips of things, all which have an
impact on the watcher. The scenes are very emotive, making your heart race,
stirring your emotions and they are also quite touching as well as shocking.
• The scenes are often juxtaposed, the strong contrast between them has a
powerful effect on the viewer. These contrasts include love and hate, life and
death, anger and peace, joy and sadness. Other themes included are beauty,
youth, destruction and sex. There is also an element of reminiscence as
many of the clips show young children and outdated cameras (due to low
quality).
• The extremity of all of these scenes links well to the lyrics, “is someone
getting the best of you”. They imply that feelings are still felt for someone
who once was but is no longer their partner. The videos cause the viewer to
experience the range of feelings held by the person who has been left. The
older looking clips may be representative of his reflection of the past as he
struggles to deal with the pain of no longer being with her.
Peace
Beauty
Anger
Love
Destruction
Death and Pain
