Debate about sustainable development can be traced to the Rio Summit on environment and development where emphasis was placed on empowering local communities to take charge of their own development. Sustainable development advocates for inclusiveness of all in development especially the local community. Participation of stakeholders in any development endeavour guarantees delivery of project benefits to intended users. The recent transition from MDGs to SDGs with a focus on communities clearly demonstrates the relevance of community participation in projects. This paper assesses the significance of various drivers in community led water projects in Elgeyo-Marakwet County. The paper examines different drivers at play in a typical community led water project and assesses how such drivers contribute to project sustainability. The paper concludes that for successful water project implementation, key project drivers should be strengthened by all participating actors.

Just as cities are hubs for innovations and investments that expand opportunities, they are also living laboratories confronting challenges of increasing complexity. They face a wide range of shocks and stresses ranging from natural hazards and climate change, to financial shocks and terrorism; slow-moving chronic stresses like poverty and violence and social conflict. As we consider how cities will adapt to the challenges of the 21st century – both known and unknown – the resilience agenda becomes increasingly important. This presentation highlights the Rockefeller Foundation’s understanding of city resilience, as informed by the RF-Arup City Resilience Framework, as well as its Resilience by Design portfolio, a series of place-based, landscape-scale interventions in U.S. coastal cities to show how we can build resilience with design while working with large federal institutions.

A long-standing, influential hypothesis in the academic literature and in policy is that participation in decision-making by intended bene ciaries of local public good provision programs improves the outcomes of those programs. This paper presents the rst experimental evidence on the e ect of transferring decision-making authority to targeted bene ciaries on the impact of a local public good provision program. We randomly assigned participatory and non-participatory decision-making structures to communities who received an otherwise identical intervention, a package of technical advices and subsidies to improve access to safe drinking water. Participation in decision-making resulted in larger reported increases in access to safe drinking water, but only when we imposed rules on the decision-making process that were designed to limit the appropriation of project bene ts by elite or influential groups or individuals. Villages in which communities participated in decision-making under rules designed to prevent appropriation reported a signi cantly greater increase in access to safe drinking water (an increase of 25%) relative to villages in which project sta took decisions (14%). In villages in which the communities participated in decisionmaking without imposed rules, the change in access to safe drinking water was the same (14%) as in villages in which project sta took decisions. We conclude that participation can improve the impact of local public good provision programs in economically important respects; that the risk of appropriation in this context was real and signi cant, and that the rules we applied to limit appropriation { minimum representation requirements and decision by unanimous consensus - were eff ective in accomplishing their objective.Recommended

Climate change and forests: assessing local governance
The skills of anthropologists in local-level social analysis have great potential for contributing to the global discussion on climate change. Their skills and findings could be used toward reducing the risks related to REDD+, and working constructively with communities to adapt to the changes that cannot be prevented. CIFOR scientist Carol Colfer gave this presentation at the Society for Applied Anthropology’s annual meeting, in Seattle, Washington in April 2011. The aim was to interest anthropologists in addressing climate change adaptation and mitigation more actively.

The Strategic Planning Committee of project pure presented a vision statement to improve quality of life in developing countries through solar purification of water. Their goals are to provide resources and education for villages to access clean water, create understanding between developed and developing areas to encourage action, and obtain feedback to refine their metrics. This session aims at taking stock of innovative theoretical, methodological and empirical achievements in forest governance research, from the local to the global level.
Abstract. A Model Forest is a landscape-level approach focused on people working together voluntarily in partnership towards a common vision of the human sustainable development of a large territory in which forest ecosystems play an important role. In the Ibero-American region, there are currently 29 Model Forests in 15 countries, which means that the approach is having a potential impact on the management of over 30 million hectares and on more than 6 million people. The emphasis is usually placed on environmental and economic benefits, whereas this research examines the main social and political impacts which emerge from the analysis of the reports submitted by the Model Forests to the regional network secretariat during the last decade and the data collected through interviews and monitoring activities. The study indicates that Model Forests constitute effective platforms for the application of international agreements, public policies and State programs at the local level, and that they are able to influence decision-makers through advocacy. The paper reviews the success stories of several Model Forests in this regard. Finally, even though the Model Forests process is still at its early stages, the study shows how it can drive long-term sustainability and social change in the communities.

Session 26. International to local forest governance: taking stock of political theories, methodologies and research findings

This session aims at taking stock of innovative theoretical, methodological and empirical achievements in forest governance research, from the local to the global level.
Abstract. A Model Forest is a landscape-level approach focused on people working together voluntarily in partnership towards a common vision of the human sustainable development of a large territory in which forest ecosystems play an important role. In the Ibero-American region, there are currently 29 Model Forests in 15 countries, which means that the approach is having a potential impact on the management of over 30 million hectares and on more than 6 million people. The emphasis is usually placed on environmental and economic benefits, whereas this research examines the main social and political impacts which emerge from the analysis of the reports submitted by the Model Forests to the regional network secretariat during the last decade and the data collected through interviews and monitoring activities. The study indicates that Model Forests constitute effective platforms for the application of international agreements, public policies and State programs at the local level, and that they are able to influence decision-makers through advocacy. The paper reviews the success stories of several Model Forests in this regard. Finally, even though the Model Forests process is still at its early stages, the study shows how it can drive long-term sustainability and social change in the communities.

BRAC aims to increase agricultural and aquacultural productivity in coastal Bangladesh through several strategies. These include converting single cropping areas to double or triple cropping, introducing short-duration rice varieties, stress-tolerant crops and fish varieties, and integrating fish/prawn-rice-vegetable systems in ghers. Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.
Building Production Ready Search Pipelines with Spark and Milvus
Spark is the widely used ETL tool for processing, indexing and ingesting data to serving stack for search. Milvus is the production-ready open-source vector database. In this talk we will show how to use Spark to process unstructured data to extract vector representations, and push the vectors to Milvus vector database for search serving.

It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.

Artificial Intelligence for XMLDevelopment
