In 2014 UNDP launched the Innovation Facility to support innovation in addressing development challenges. The Innovation Facility was made possible with the generous contribution of the Government of Denmark and co-investments from UNDP’s core resources.
This review lays out why innovation is becoming increasingly important in international development and for UNDP. It describes our approach to innovation as well as brief descriptions of the initiatives funded by the Innovation Facility in 2014, though many more UNDP projects not highlighted in this report embraced and tested novel methods. UNDP has invested over time in the uptake of new ways of doing business and over the past three years has invested in strategically exploring innovation under the motto “innovation happens in practice.” Through the Innovation Facility we strive to accelerate this approach by putting innovation in development solutions on a new trajectory.
The oneVillage Community Day Presentation was given at 10am on Sept 27, 2009 at the Technology Bldg in Taipei Taiwan. The presentation gives an overview of our work particularly in relation to what the 1st Community Day event was about in July supporting the oneVillage Ecotour Service and Learning Program. As part of this program, 10 students from National Tsing Hua Univ traveled to Ghana for the month of Aug. During their time in Ghana, they shared experiences with each other and the local people, while aiding in various development efforts organized by our affiliate OVF Ghana. We see this as a model development effort that links projects and people with ICT and in many cases supports the development of Open Source solutions in the field.
Innovation means different thing to different agencies. UNICEF globally is at the centre of defining Innovation and its principles for humanitarian and development agencies with USAID, Gates Foundation, EOSG Global Pulse, WFP, OCHA, UNDP, SIDA, IKEA Foundation, UN Foundation, and UNHCR.
For UNICEF “Innovation at UNICEF is collaboration that translates ideas, technologies, and partnerships into products, services, and processes to bring about better, more equitable results for children. UNICEF creates and guides approaches that are transformative, at scale, for the world’s most vulnerable children.”
The slides shares a quick overview of the direction Kenya Country Office is taking whilst delivering results for children.

We’re working together with communities in Africa to enable them to build fully-functional, internet-enabled computer stations. We call them Hello Hubs. Each Hello Hub provides underprivileged children and adults with access to the internet: allowing them to educate themselves, communicate with others, and ultimately have a voice in the global community.
