1) The document discusses horror film inspirations, including iconic villains from Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th.
2) It also draws inspiration from Psycho's use of music to create tension without graphic violence.
3) The filmmakers want to subvert common horror tropes like characters walking into danger and use mystery to build tension like the "ninja cat" video by hiding the villain's movements.
1. Initial ideas
We have been very much inspired by slasher films. The iconic villains that they have created inspired us. Films that have inspired us include Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday the 13th. These films have created characters that have a huge life expectancy and gained fans across the world. They are all unique in their own different ways and their respective franchises rely on them to create a good horror and bring in success.
At the same time we have been very inspired by films that arguably created this genre such as Psycho. Psycho’s biggest influence on us was the music. Psycho proved that gore is not necessary to scare people through film. We want to try to incorporate this into our film, we also want to show that gore is not always the answer to scare people and we want to go use the methods of prolific horror films than the ones of modern day horrors despite their success.
We also wanted to contradict many classic horror scenes. For example, many horrors use technique where a character would walk backwards and would then bump into a villain, we want to contradict and make the audience think this is happening and then show that they are not in trouble. In more simple words we want to delay danger as much as we can by dragging them into false senses of danger.
We also want to incorporate themes of mystery. We have been inspired by YouTube viral video “ninja cat”. The video shows a cat who slowly comes closer towards the camera when the camera is not looking at the cat, the audience is aware the cat is coming closer but their not sure how and this creates mystery. We want to do this with out villain who is chasing the victim. We want the audience to see that he is coming closer and closer and but we do not want the audience to show him moving into these new locations.
Finally we have been very much inspired by the way Nightmare On Elm Street’s method to display their credits that we are going to use the exact same method. Nightmare on Elm Street have put credits in between scene changes instead of using transition but keep music playing in the background. To us this felt this could be a great method of scaring people as they know the events in the film are still occurring but they cannot see them. Furthermore it also gives us great opportunities to use non-diagetic sound.
